We live in an era of rapid globalization in which being able to communicate across cultures is imperative to our ability to function in a diverse workplace, city, and world. This course exposes the student to the importance of communication among and between politically, culturally, and ethnically diverse people as a bridge to understanding in an increasingly multi-cultural world. This course explores the role of interpersonal perception in communicating with persons from varied cultures, and allows the student to apply these understandings in their own lives. Intercultural Communication focuses on the importance of culture in our everyday lives, and the ways in which culture interrelates with and effects communication processes. We live in an era of rapid globalization in which being able to communicate across cultures is imperative to our ability to function in a diverse workplace, city, and world. It develops individualswho canunderstandpeoplefromdiverseculturalbackgrounds,whocanseethingsfromdifferentandmultipleperspectives, andwho can apply theories of intercultural communication to practical, work-basedsituations.Objectives:Bytheendofthiscourse,studentsshouldbeableto:

• Analyseandcriticallyevaluatethemaintheoriesininterculturalcommunication.• Developinsightsfromthesetheories.• RelatethesetheoriestoELTbasedsituations.• Arguethecaseforadoptingparticularapproachesinparticularsituations.• Developindependentresearchskills.• Analyseintercultural interactionsandevaluatesituationsusinginterculturalcommunication

skills.• Understandculturalandglobalflowofinformation.

Teachingmethod:Lectures,discussionsessions,moderatingsessions,studentpresentations.

Prerequisites:None.Teachingaids:PowerPointpresentation,Turnitin,referencebooks,articles.Assessmentmethod:Yourevaluationwillbebasedonamoderatingsession(10%),6reactionpapers(30%),aresearchpaper(50%)andanoralpresentationofyourresearchstudy(10%).Firstly,throughouttheterm,youneedto act as a moderator, either as a pair or individually, for a discussion topic. Secondly, for eachmoderatingsession,themoderatorisresponsibleforaddressingarelatedindividualdiscussiontopictoeachstudentbeforethelecture.Eachstudent,then,needtoreadrelatedchaptersasoutlinedinthecoursecontentandrespondtothemoderator’srequestbywritingareactionpaperof500wordspreceding the lecture.Proceeding the lecture,each studentneed to revise the reactionpaperandsubmititsrevisedversion.Then,youneedtosubmitanumberof6reactionpapersintotal.Thirdly,youneedtoconductaresearchstudyrelatedtointerculturalcommunicationandlanguagelearningandreportitinaresearchpaperofapproximately4,000words.Youarestronglysuggestedtopresentyourfindingsinarelatedconferenceand/orpublishyourpaperinarelatedjournal.Finally,attheendoftheterm,youneedtodeliveranoralpresentationtoyourclassmates,andinterestedresearchersifthereareany.Yourmoderatingsessionandreactionpaperscontributetoyourmid-termexaminationgradewhereasyourresearchpaperanditsoralpresentationcontributetoyourfinalgrade.Rememberthat all the written assignments must be submitted online through Turnitin.
