Introductions

Pilot Innovation Zone

• Students academic growth has not done well for the past several

• The State of Colorado steps in when this situation occurs and requires changes of the school to improve academic growth

• Both the State and the District are very supportive of Boston and want to see positive changes.

• Superintendent Munn will be meeting with the staff to talk about the timeline of the design of these changes on Wednesday.

• There will be a “School Design Team” that will design the changes for Boston

The School Design Team

• comprised of the Principal, staff members, community members, and district personnel.

• This School Design Team are charged with creating a plan to make changes that will significantly increase student achievement with all stakeholders input.

• The Plan will be presented to the State of Colorado

• Ultimately, the State of Colorado has the authority to accept of deny the plan, but the district has hired a company to support this work who have successfully done this work in the past.

• This Design Team will start this work as early as this month

What are some of the changes have we already

started

• Remember this work is just starting, but here are three of the areas that are happening this year.

School Culture

• Our staff has created some specific and intentional work around School Culture

• Consistent rituals and routines for students (how they are greeted, how they walk in the hallways)

• Recreation of the “Bear Paws”

• Believe, Engage, Achieve, Respect, Scholars

• Assemblies and Incentives that celebrate students

Data Driven Instruction

• This is intentional understandings of where students are academically and then planning instruction that if focused on academic growth.

• This includes keeping track of students academic growth throughout the year.

Observation Feedback for Teachers

• We believe we have great teachers who love your children and want to be the best they can be at their jobs.

• This process of Observation Feedback provides support for teachers by having a coach or administrator in their classrooms giving them feedback on a weekly or by weekly basis.

• We talk about what they are doing well and what things they can teak in their teaching to be more effective

Other Changes?

• This is the creative work of the School Design Team, but understand the whole purpose is to support your children in their academic growth and make this school GREAT!

We are a Title I School

• What does that mean?

We are Title I because…

• Our school has a high number of students who are eligible for Free and Reduced Price Lunch.– We receive additional federal money to help

increase student achievement in our school.

– Unified Improvement Plans (UIP) were written to clearly define how Title I money will be spent. We are redesigning our UIP this year with some of the changes we have spoken about.

We are Title I because…

– All educational funds in our schools, including Title I, support a standards based education. Student progress is monitored by the School Performance Frameworks (SPF) from the Colorado Department of Education.

– 1% of the district’s Title I budget will be distributed to schools for parent involvement. You have the right to have input as to how this money is spent. You can learn more by contacting your Family Liaison.

What is the State School Performance Framework (SPF)?

The framework used, by the state, to provide information to stakeholders about each school’s performance based on the four key performance indicators: 1. student academic growth, 2. student achievement, 3. achievement and growth gaps, and 4. postsecondary/workforce readiness. Schools are assigned to a type of improvement plan based on their performance across all of the indicator areas.
