Chromebook Informational SessionJanuary 13, 2015

What?Odyssey is implementing the use of Chromebooks on a one to one basis.Every student in grades 3rd-8th will receive a Chromebook with a hard shell caseAll students must sign the Chromebook pledge and select or waive insuranceWhy?Effects of Technology on StudentsAccording to a research project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, When students are using technology as a tool or a support for communicating with others, they are in an active role rather than the passive role of recipient of information transmitted by a teacher, textbook, or broadcast. The student is actively making choices about how to generate, obtain, manipulate, or display information. Technology use allows many more students to be actively thinking about information, making choices, and executing skills than is typical in teacher-led lessons. Moreover, when technology is used as a tool to support students in performing authentic tasks, the students are in the position of defining their goals, making design decisions, and evaluating their progress.

Why? Technology and the Georgia Milestones Assessment SystemGeorgia Milestones is an assessment program which is replacing the CRCT. The test taking style has changed from multiple choice to open-ended (constructed-response) items in language arts and mathematics (all grades and courses); as well as, a writing component (in response to passages read by students) at every grade level and course within the language arts assessment.Current requirements are 30% of the student population with a transition to 100% online administration.

Why? Chromebooks 1:1 vs BYODWhen deciding whether Odyssey would become a One to One (1:1) or a BringYour Own Device (BYOD) school, we evaluated the pros and cons of both and chose to gowith the program that most benefited the students and their learning goals. Why? Chromebooks 1:1 vs BYOD comparison

How?The Chromebooks and accessories were purchased in 2014 using Title I fundsOdysseys bandwidth expanded to 100mbpsOdyssey currently has 15 Wireless Access Points and plans to put in 17 more during Feb. BreakHow?Digital SafetyOdyssey uses 2 layers of protection:Meraki/Cisco Filtering ServicesGoogle Safe SearchThe Chromebook filter settings are also active on other networks.Student emails are restricted to the Odyssey network. Odyssey performs all updates.Students have been taught best practices for passwords, online accounts, and digital citizenship.

How?Physical SafetyChromebooks are stored in locked security carts. All Chromebooks are checked out to individual students using serial numbers and Inventory Tags.Students are provided a hard-shell protective case and a padded carrying case to help with, not guarantee, protection of the Chromebook. Students have been taught proper handling and carrying techniques, such as two-handed carrying and closing the Chromebook when not in use or before standing. How?InsuranceInsurance premiums are paid annually and non-refundable after the first two weeks of school.Insurance deductibles are paid in the event of accidental damage which requires a repair or replacement of the Chromebook. Discounted insurance premiums and deductibles are available for families who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch Rates. Families may opt to waive insurance making them solely responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement of the Chromebook. How?InsuranceIn the event of a loss due to theft while the student has the Chromebook at home, parents may include the Chromebook on the homeowners/renters insurance claim with the other stolen items instead of filing a claim under the school policy and paying the respective deductible. In the event of damage caused by another student, Odyssey will investigate. The responsibility of payment of the deductible will be determined on a case-by-case basis. ReferencesSRI International.
