REFRAMING DISABILITY: CHALLENGING WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW DR. AMANDA KRAUS This workshop will address “what we think we know” about disability. By analyzing language, media and design, we will problematize the dominant narrative on disability. We will explore prevalent models used to frame disability as well as emerging thinking that challenges the idea that disability is a personal tragedy or problem, but a phenomenon created by the design of our environments with far reaching political, social and economic implications. HOW SOCIAL MEDIA IS REDUCING HATE IN THE NEXT GENERATION PRESLEY ALEXANDER When Presley was 7 years old, she was a big fan of YouTube like many kids her age so she wanted to start her own channel. She talked her family into starting a channel with her and she started posting a video every day. What started out as just a fun project turned into a way for Presley to explore the world and learn more about herself in the process. From covering social justice events to teaching science and Japanese and interviewing celebrities, she has been on quite a journey the past five years. Some of her primary causes have become supporting LGBT causes and talking to people about why she is still hopeful for the future even when things look bad these days, and that's what she's here to share with us today.
