A MESSAGE FROM THE

BY STEVE GLASSER

As I sat back to reflect on the recently completed school year, I could not help but continually think of gratitude. Obviously, the end of the academic year was unprecedented for all of us as we learned to adjust and adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic and all the changes to our lives that came with it.On March 15, due to COVID-19, the State of North Dakota, per executive order by Governor Burgum, suspended all school until further notice. Little did we know that “further notice” meant an environment of distance learning for our students, grades preschool through 12, for the remainder of the academic year. We had to develop and implement a distance learning plan for all of our students and we did that within a week. We lost very little educational time and that was the result of much time and effort from our principals, Father Hochhalter and Mrs. JoLyn Tessier, and our dedicated teachers. I am so thankful to Father, JoLyn and the faculty for rolling up their sleeves and making the best of a very difficult situation. Additionally, Bishop Kagan and our dedicated pastors showed their unconditional support and tremendous leadership through a very challenging spring. My appreciation and gratitude goes out to our loyal parents and their children as well. Our parents and students collaborated with their teachers to get up and running quickly, showing a lot of grit. Our students had to come to grip with the reality that there would be no spring extra-curricular activities and our seniors had to deal with the uncertainty regarding their graduation. There was very little complaining; rather there was an attitude of acceptance (this is out of our control) and service (how can we help). This is a prime example of the Titan Standard shining brightly!I want to end my message with a special showering of gratitude to our seniors. They dealt with much adversity in their years at Trinity Junior High and High School: their 7th grade year found them displaced when the catastrophic fire occurred (March, 2014); and the final quarter of their senior year found them displaced once again as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic. By the grace of God they were able to celebrate the traditional Rose Mass at the Church of Queen of Peace and Commencement Exercises in the Trinity Auditorium on May 17. I hope that these experiences, as difficult as they were, have taught our graduates valuable lessons that will help guide them throughout their lives. My prayer for the Class of 2020 is that they leave the walls of Trinity High School with faith, hope, and love.I wish all of our Titan Echoes readers a safe and happy summer!

Reunions 2020

T H S

The classes of 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010 were unable to have their traditional class

reunions this summer. At the time of printing this issue, the classes of 1970, 1980 and 2010 have decided

to reschedule for next year.

Check the November 2020 issue of Titan Echoes, as well as www.trinitycatholicschools.com

Vivid in the mind of Mrs. Petrina Haag is her first encounter with Catholic school education – it was in student teaching while an undergradu-

ate student at Dickinson State University in the 1970’s. “There was just something different. There was a differ-ent atmosphere in the Catholic school and it was beauti-ful,” she said. As confident as Petrina was in her chosen path of teaching, there was no way she could have known she would stay in the field for 44 years; 41 of those years spent at Trinity Elementary West (or St. Patrick’s Elementary School or St. Patrick Queen of Peace Elementary School…depend-ing on what years one goes to in the history books!) From childhood, Petrina knew she did not want to be anything

but a teacher. In the +Thomas and +Rose Krebs family of 13 children, Petrina was the first one to graduate from a four-year university. She is a 1976 alumnae of Dickinson State University. “My first job out of college was teaching third grade and girls’ physical education for grades third through eighth at St. Bernard’s School in Belfield. I was also the cheer advisor – and the only lay teacher on staff. The rest of the faculty were religious sisters,” Petrina said. At that time, St. Bernard’s was a first through eighth grade school – and boys and girls had physical education separately. Petri-na continued, “The next school year I took a job at New Castle Elementary School in New Hradec where I taught a combination classroom of grades first through fourth, and grades first through eighth physical education.” Af-ter two years at New Castle Elementary, and wanting to find a position in Dickinson, Petrina was hired to teach second grade at St. Patrick’s School by +Monsignor Ger-ald Walsh (the pastor of the Church of St. Patrick and Superintendent of St. Patrick’s School at that time). The year was 1979. “I always wanted to teach second grade because it was at that grade level that I could help bring two of our Church’s sacraments to the children,” Haag said. She continued, “To me, our Faith is what life is all about and having a hand in forming children along that path is a tremendous responsibility but also a wonderful privilege!” Over

“I really felt, in all my years of teaching at Trinity, that we were a team.”

the years, Haag has taught hundreds of students. “My largest class was 37 students. We divided the class for the mornings, having language arts and math in smaller groups; but for the afternoons we were all together. The smallest class I ever taught was 12 students.” She had all four of her own children in her classroom, all graduates of Trinity High School (Justin, ‘99; Jessica, ‘01; Lee, ‘05; and Kira, ‘12), as well as two of her grandchildren (Davin and Ashlynn). Haag readily admits that technology is the greatest change she has witnessed over her career. “We went from record players and reel-to-reel film projectors to smart-boards and iPads. For me, learning to teach with technol-ogy was challenging, but tracking students academically became easier and more streamlined with technology.” As much as technology has changed the classroom, it hasn’t changed the school culture that Haag grew to love so much over the years, “I re-ally felt, in all my years of teaching at Trinity, that we were a team. We didn’t compete with each other, rather we shared ideas and our own talents to help each other be better

so that we could, in turn, help our students achieve their best. That is one of the things that I will certainly miss in retiring – the team chemistry and my colleagues.” In asking Haag for wisdom she would share with new teachers just coming in to the classroom, she excitedly offered, “every student has a voice and every student de-serves to have that voice heard and respected. Teaching really is about helping children feel loved, needed, and important.” How can a new teacher do these things, prac-tically speaking? Petrina insightfully offered, “Listen to each student. They all have their own unique story, their own background that comes to school with them each and every morning. Find a time to listen to them – even if it’s for two minutes. For them to see that they matter to you, that’s how a student-teacher relationship is formed.”

This section of the Titan Echoes is devoted to pieces of information about Titans of today – what they are doing, a sampling of their accomplishments, and general news items happening in the school.

We are proud of our Titans!

The Titan Tots Preschool Fam-ily Christmas Party was a mar-velous event! The evening pre-sented a wonderful opportunity for our Titan Tots Preschool Fam-ilies to enjoy the season of Advent with cookie decorating and craft making in anticipation of Christ-mas. The children of our Titan Tots Preschool performed a few Christmas carols, too!

Taste of Kinder-garten is our fall open house for prospective kin-dergarten stu-dents and their families. The stu-

dents and parents had the op-portunity to attend a school Mass that morning, and then enjoyed a donut before they

broke for a parent session and a child session. In a brief, one hour morning, these families get a good ‘taste’ of what kinder-garten is like at Trinity Elementary School. _________________________________________________

In the senior social studies class, Principles of Democracy, a group of seniors sat down with Trinity Catholic Schools Presi-dent, Mr. Steve Glasser, to inter-view him in order to write a mock legislative bill for a class project. _________________________________________________

The artwork of our elementary Titans can be easy to overlook at times, but when we take a minute to notice, these pieces richly decorate our school hallways and our classrooms and speak beautifully to the innocence of childhood.

The 2020 Best of the Western Edge Awards, as voted on by members in the community of Dickinson and as awarded by The Dickinson Press found Trinity Catholic Schools as award recip-ients in a number of categories. A truly humbling honor for Trinity Catholic Schools. _________________________________________________

Both our Trinity Junior High and High School Science Olympiad Teams did well at the winter com-petition hosted at Dickinson State University. Team Titan

in the B Division (grades 7-9) placed 1st; Team Titan in the C Division (grades 10-12) placed 2nd! _________________________________________________

Our teachers and staff really missed the students during distance learning – so – we had a parade! A Titan Team Parade was held in the Trinity Junior High and High School North Parking Lot. Teachers made signs, parked their vehicles, sat in the trunks of their cars, and waved to students and families as they drove by. Over the course of an hour, the teachers saw many smiling faces!_________________________________________________

Mrs. Tessier, Miss Grinsteinner, Father Hoch-halter, and the teachers and staff of Trinity Elementary North hosted a virtual event called Holy Mass and Muffins in late April. This is an opportunity for 4th grade students to spend a little time in the morn-ing getting acquainted with Trinity Elemen-tary North - the place that will be their new school when they begin 5th grade in the fall. The morning began with a live-stream of Holy Mass, a front door muffin delivery followed by a video tour, and a Zoom call question and answer session. It was a fantastic morning!

BodyOur 5th and 6th grade students of Trinity Elementary North enjoyed a “manners lunch” right before Thanksgiving. They dressed up, enjoyed each other’s company and conversation and exercised their manners a little bit more. _________________________________________________

Trinity High School per-formed Fiddler on the Roof in December – reviving a pro-duction that had been done at Trinity 48 years ago – in truly magnificent fashion.

In what has become a Trin-ity Elementary Tradition, students who were a part of the Lighthouse Leader-ship Team at Trinity Ele-mentary North decorated a Christmas tree at Sax Motor Company in Dick-inson. Many schools in the community come and deco-rate trees and the community is able to vote on the most beau-tifully decorated tree.

Making a statement in the main hallway of Trinity Junior High and High School is our Fam-ily of Donors Wall. Through the generous gifts of many, the new academic wing and St. John Paul II Chapel of Trinity Junior High and High School were constructed. The Family of Do-nors Wall is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the benefactors who rebuilt our school. _________________________________________________

The 15th Annual Trinity Catholic Schools Race for Educa-tion was held in May. Although this fundraising event took on a different face this year because of COVID-19, the purposes of the event were certainly fulfilled: to raise funds for the 2019-2020 Annual Fund and to get out and get active as a Titan Family!

Trinity High School has had a successful speech team over the course of the years, and 2020 was no different. Although the Titan Speakers did not get to compete in a North Dakota State Speech Tournament this year, we know they would done so well. _______________________________________________________________________

One of the favorite concerts of the year, ExtravaBANDza, was commemorated in so-cial media this spring. Our Titan bands and choirs are spectacular, and although we didn’t get to hear them perform this spring, we appreciate the way they share their talents.

Fiat Lux – a spiritual growth group for Trinity High School Girls – start-ed in the late fall, 2019. Together they spent time in prayer as sisters in Christ and engaged in discussions on things like vocations and post-high school plans. _________________________________________________

One of the great privileges of being a school rooted in the Catholic Faith is having the chance to celebrate special feast days – like the Feast of St. Lucy. Students at the junior high and high school were greeted on

her feast day with a special prayer card and sweet treat. _________________________________________________

The first Friday Fury (a way that our students in grades 7-12 cele-brate the end of the school week) of 2020 was a call to our students in grades 7 through 12 to celebrate their baptism, as that Friday landed very close to the Feast of the Bap-tism of Our Lord.

Golden Mass – one of our very favorite Ti-tan Traditions – was celebrated on our final day of the first semester, December 20, 2019. This celebration of this Holy Mass, combined with the Wassail Tea for our seniors and their parents – make for lasting Ti-tan mem-ories.

Cookies for a Cause was hosted by the Trinity Junior High Stu-dent Council as a way to support pro-life groups in the community and remind people to pray for an end to abortion and a greater respect for the dignity of human life. Students were invited to the Fisher Commons over the lunch period to take a cook-ie and leave a free will donation.

The Trinity Athletic Boosters worked hard this spring making improvements to our practice football field. The im-provements included aeration of the football field, the addi-tion of multiple truckloads of topsoil, leveling (filling in the low spots), removing rock, overseeding and reseeding the grass, and multiple sprinkler heads repaired and replaced._________________________________________________

Trinity High School hosted a blood drive in late March – amidst COVID-19. The virus didn’t stop the need for blood donations and the Ti-tan Family came out and ful-filled the need. Representa-tives from Vitalant had this

to share with Trinity Catholic Schools, “Please tell everyone how proud all of us at Vitalant - Dakotas are of the students and donors. They came together at a time of uncertainty. They were leaders and lifesavers, for not only their community, but also for their nation.” There were 39 blood donors; 42 life-sav-ing units of red blood cells donated; and 25 first time donors! _________________________________________________

Trinity Junior High and High School as well as Trinity Ele-mentary School hosted virtual/at home spirit weeks in late March. Students dressed in a certain way each day and/or participated in a given ac-tivity and then sent a photo to their

teachers.

In January, 2020 close to 40 of our high school students who attended the March for Life in Washington, DC. An incredible Titan experience!______________________________

It is a blessing to have our good and holy bishop, His Excellency David D. Kagan join us year after year to cele-brate Catholic Schools Week with a system-wide Holy Mass. _______________________________________________________

The State Know Your Faith Competi-tion in 2020 was graciously hosted by St. Mary’s Central High School in Bis-marck. The Titans came home the champi-ons and now the traveling trophy stands tall in the main office of Trinity Junior High and High School.

Titan Parents in Prayer resumed a second year of gathering to pray on Mondays in Lent. This is a time where parents gathered to pray the Holy Rosary and adore our Lord in Eu-charistic Adoration while lifting each student’s name in prayer. _______________________________________________________

From March 16 to May 15 (our time period of distance learning due to COVID-19), our YouTube channel streamed: 39 Holy Masses, 76 Pledge of Allegiance, 76 morning prayers, 36 Chap-lets of Divine Mercy, and 36 afternoon

prayers. That is more than 870 minutes of streamed prayer on YouTube (not including Holy Mass) - with roughly 20,000 views! Make sure to subscribe to us on YouTube!_______________________________________________________

Trinity Elementary School faculty and staff members gathered to make hearts for the students at the start of distance learning. The hearts, which included the names of each Trinity Elementary Student, were formed into rosary beads and decorated the windows of our school buildings.

WelcomeFather Christian SmithOrdained to the Holy Priesthood for the Diocese of Bismarck on Thursday, June 11, 2020, Father Christian Smith is the new chaplain of Trinity High School, as appointed by Bishop Kagan. Father Smith “takes the reins” of the chaplaincy from Father Jordan Dosch, who served as chaplain of Trinity High School from the fall, 2017 to the end of the 2019-2020 school year. Father Dosch’s time as chaplain was a true gift to our school community and he certainly will be missed. Father’s new assignment in our diocese, as appointed by Bishop Kagan, is that of vocation director. Father Dosch will reside in the rectory of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and work throughout the diocese. We pray for Father Dosch, as he helps young men of our diocese discern God’s will for their lives. Born and raised in Bismarck, Father Smith was blessed to have a Catholic school education throughout his life, beginning at Cathedral Elementary School in Bismarck and graduating from St. Mary’s Central High School in 2012. The son of Stuart and Ruth Smith, Father Smith has one sister, Jenna. While at St. Mary’s, Father Smith was on the golf team and the baseball team, however he is quick to say his biggest passion is in music. He plays the saxophone and the guitar and especially loves jazz. Before discerning a call to the seminary, Father Smith attended the University of Mary for two years. St. John Vianney Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota was Father’s home for minor seminary. After graduating from the University of St. Thomas and finishing minor seminary, Father completed his theological studies at the Pontif-ical North American College in Rome. “Rome was a wonderful place to study and it was fascinating to trace the footsteps and visit the final resting places of many saints. The food and the cappuccino were also fantas-tic,” said Father Smith. He continued “being back in the United States and in the Diocese of Bismarck is a bless-ing, though, and one of the things I missed the most was driving. There is something relaxing about a drive through the open country.”Father Smith is eager to begin at Trinity Junior High and High School. “I am really excited to teach! Wrestling with ideas in religion class when I was a high school stu-dent was always fascinating, and it became a huge part of my vocational journey. I just want to give the students everything I received in that way,” Father Smith said. Welcome to the Titan Family, Father Smith!

We are so blessed to have you!

Sitting in his office, in the rectory of the Church of St. Wenceslaus, boxes scattered about and the white walls bare of pictures, Monsignor Patrick Schum-

acher thoughtfully recounts, “...this is the place it began. The dream of Trinity High School was started in this office when three priests of Jesus Christ (+Monsignor George P. Aberle, +Father John E. Garvin, and +Father Adolph Pribyl), pastors of the Dickinson parishes at the time, gathered to dream about taking Catholic school education a step farther in the 1950s. They dreamed, right here, about a Catholic high school that would serve this community and form young hearts and minds to Christ.” Now, as Monsignor Schumacher assumes his new assign-ment as pastor of the Church of Corpus Christi in Bismarck, he recalls the discussions that happened in that same rec-tory office in March of 2014 – the morning following the fire that gutted the entire east academic wing of Trinity Ju-nior High and High School. “The very next morning, the

adminis-tration of

Dickinson Public Schools came to this office and said ‘what can we do? How can we help?’ The fire of 2014 was truly a grace-filled event for our entire community,” Schumacher said. The fire set a new path for Trinity Catholic Schools: a path of stability and strength. In 2011, Monsignor Schumacher was assigned as pastor of the Church of St. Wenceslaus. When His Excellency David D. Kagan, Bishop of the Diocese of Bismarck, asked Mon-signor Schumacher to become the pastor of the Church of St. Wenceslaus, Monsignor knew part of the reason he was coming to Dickinson was to help the Catholic school system. “I was coming to Dickinson from St. Joseph’s in Mandan, where I had a school, and Bishop thought that in moving to St. Wenceslaus I could be a help to Trinity Cath-olic Schools. That’s where my journey here began,” Schum-acher said. He continued, “at that time, Trinity needed sta-bility in leadership – and we found that when we hired Mr. Steve Glasser as our president.”

Just one month after Mr. Glasser was hired, the fire happened and that set a new direction for Trin-

ity Catholic Schools. “The fire event changed everything. The grace of that event is that it revitalized our sense of common ownership of the Catholic School system – that same common ownership that was inspired by the Holy Spirit when +Monsignor Aberle, +Father Garvin, and +Father Pribyl met over 50 years ago.” Monsignor Schumacher believes deeply in the value of Catholic school education. He believes that a Catholic school brings tremendous life to a parish and the inherent value of a Catholic school to a parish and to a community significantly outweighs the cost. “Bishop Kagan’s impact on Catholic schools in our diocese cannot be overlooked. He is a bishop who expects priests to support the Catho-lic schools because it is in the schools we find the future of our Church,” Schumacher said. The evidence of Monsignor Schumacher’s belief in Cath-olic school education is tremendous: under his leader-ship, Trinity Catholic Schools implemented the most significant faculty salary increases in 30 years; in collab-oration with the Diocese of Bismarck and Bishop Kagan, Monsignor Schumacher effectively restructured the Trin-ity Catholic Schools Board of Directors; and Monsignor Schumacher led the building and the opening in 2017 of the new academic wing of Trinity Junior High and High School (which includes the magnificent St. John Paul II Chapel; as well as major renovations of the auditorium and

gymnasium). Trinity Cath-olic Schools is forever im-pacted by the p r o s p e r o u s efforts of this priest of Jesus Christ. Mons ig nor ’s mantra of pa-tience and allowing the Holy Spirit space to work is what helped him lead Trin-ity Catholic Schools through challenging years and it is what forti-fies him for his new priestly assignment. “God is and will always be faithful. He has been faithful to me in my priesthood and my vocation centers on allowing God to use me however He needs; this is the vocation of every priest.” Schumacher continues, “I pray that I will have an open heart and then I stay out of the way of the Holy Spirit, exercise patience, and allow Him to act.”

Dear Monsignor – words of gratitude seem to fall short in expressing our thanks to you. You have left a beautiful and lasting legacy on Trinity Catholic Schools; one that will be experienced for generations to come, God willing.

May the Holy Spirit continue His good work in and through you “Ad maiorem Dei gloriam.”

Titans in the News highlights news of our alumni. We welcome submissions for tidbits of news to include in this section. If you or alumni you know have had recent accomplishments, awards, or other happenings in life, we would love to know! We appreciate photos, too!

Please email submissions to DeAnn Scheeler, Director of Mission Advancement, [email protected]

Kevin Stolt (‘02) was ordained to the priesthood on December 13, 2019 at the Basilica of the Nation-al Shrine of the Immaculate Con-ception. He was ordained for the religious order the Institute of the Incarnate Word. Prior to discern-ing a vocation to the priesthood, Kevin earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Com-puter Science and Engineering, as well as a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from the Mas-sachusetts Institute of Technology. It was while Kev-in was employed as a software engineer for Google in Mountain View, California, that he discerned a call to the priesthood.

In May 2020, Bishop David D. Kagan, Bishop of the Diocsese of Bismarck, or-dained three young men to the transitional diaconate: Greg

Hilzendeger; as well as two Trinity High School alum-ni, Jacob Degele (‘13) and Ben Franchuck (‘07).

Gregg Grinsteinner (‘82) was named the North Dakota Inter-scholastic Athletic Adminis-trators Association (NDIAAA) Region 7 Athletic Director of the year in 2020. Grinsteinner also celebrated his 500th win as a boys basketball coach in 2020!

The June, 2020, election ballot saw three Titan alumni – who are also very active in the Dickinson community – running for a seat on the Dickinson City Commission: Peggy Thomas O’Brien (‘76), Suzi (Steffes, ‘99) Sobolik, and John Odermann (‘02).

Mr. Ken Keller, long time Trinity High School teacher, athletic director, and coach, was presented with a banner to be hung in the Knights of Co-lumbus Activities Center, recognizing his 2007 induction into the North Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Hall of Fame.

Officer Jayden Peters (‘04), police officer for the Dickinson Police Depart-ment, in December 2019, received a promotion to the rank of Corporal. Cor-poral Peters joined the Dickinson Police Department in 2011.

Colton Steiner (‘16) had the awesome opportunity, as a seminarian for the Diocese of Bismarck, to meet Pope Francis. The honor came for Colton when Bishop Kagan, Bishop of the Diocese of Bismarck, visited Rome for the region’s ad limina visit. (pictured above)

Other ways to support T R I N I T Y C A T H O L I C S C H O O L S

As a school, our everyday responsibility to give our students the academic foundation they need to prepare them for a future career path so that they can be a positive contributor in Christ’s world. At a Catholic school, however, we tie that responsibility with the responsibility we have of partnering with parents to teach and hand on the Catholic faith. We tie the need for an academic foundation in this life, with the need for a spiritual foundation – a relationship with God – that will carry us through this life and into eternal life. To carry out this tremendous responsibility and to faithfully execute our mission, we count on the support of our alumni and benefactors; our current parents and parishioners; and our friends. Here are just a few ways you can support Trinity Catholic Schools – mind, body and soul:

MIND• The Annual Fund• The Fall Gala• A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools• The Mardi Gras• The Race for Education• TheSpringRaffle

BODY• The Trinity Athletic Boosters• The Fine Arts Boosters• Titan Activities Passes

SOUL• Prayer: Please pray for our students, our teachers, our administrationandourstaff.
