We compete in a “cross country” (XC) format. This style of riding puts an emphasis on physical

conditioning and bike handling skills. This is NOT downhill racing or anything you would

see on the X-Games. Our goal is to introduce students to mountain biking

and help them develop a lifelong hobby and lifestyle.

Mountain Bike Racing

Page 4: Titan Cycling Video. Kathy Parks – TCHS Health Teacher Titan Cycling Head Coaches Robert Parks – TCHS Engineering Teacher

Provide students who have the desire to mountain bike with the coaching and camaraderie that will help them achieve both competitive and non-competitive cross-country mountain biking goals in a safe and enjoyable manner.

Develop an awareness of what it is to be an amateur athlete that is both gracious and respectful to their community.

Create an environment in which they may discover new friendships and find role models.

Foster a responsible attitude toward the use of trails and wilderness.

Philosophy

National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) is the national governing body that oversees high school mountain bike racing.

NICA was established in 2001. We are a member of the SoCal League of NICA; 68

teams There is also a NorCal league and leagues in 15 other

states. All are governed by NICA.

Organizations

Although our team is allowed to operate within our school, this is not a traditional school sport like football, baseball, etc.

We are acting as an independent body that is separate from the school and the district.

All participants sign waivers releasing liability of the school and district.

Legal Info

All registered students are insured through NICA. The medical insurance is “excess coverage”. Policy covers costs that personal health insurance

does not cover. $1 million liability insurance policy in place

through NICA. For students who do not have personal health

insurance, the NICA insurance policy covers athletes. There is a $100 deductible.

All coaches and volunteers must complete a background check through NICA and LEUSD.

All student athletes are expected to attend every practice session; students can miss 6 practices during the season with prior permission. Any student who misses more than 6 practices may be cut from the team.

Students who do not complete assigned additional individual training rides will have that absence count against the 6 missed practices.
