Summer is in full swing around Shreveport and Bossier, which typically means

a slowing down around the synagogue. However, the opposite can be said for

Congregation Agudath Achim. There seems to

have been a buzzing of activity around the shul

this last month.

We hosted the highly attended and beautifully

executed Bar Mitzvah of Caleb Joseph. We had

a visit from Rabbi Druckman of Congregation

Magen Avraham in Israel and the “Save Our

Kitchen” fundraiser. But the events do not stop there.

We will be having Torah donation ceremonies and an “open house” for the

newly remodeled building at the cemetery. It is wonderful to see so many of

our members and outside community come out to support each other and the

synagogue. Keeping our congregation strong will take a continued effort from

all of us, to participate in events and services or volunteering our time and

funds. If you missed any of the events in June, please consider attending the

upcoming events or making a donation.

Tzedakah is just as important as your participation when it comes to keeping

Agudath Achim running smoothly. Just as the ancient Jews had to rebuild the

First Temple, we have taken steps toward growing a strong Jewish community

here in Shreveport/Bossier. As we prepare to fast for Tish’a B’av early this

month, I hope that we can continue to build our congregation through

community events like the ones we have had this summer.

Hazzan’s Notes

Prayer Services at a Jewish Educators' Conference

Pretend you are the Conference Coordinator of a national Jewish Educators' conference. You have 200–300 attendees for Shabbat, and 500–700 attendees for the main conference Sunday through Wednesday. One of your many responsibilities is to provide worship experiences for all these Jews, who span the spectrum from Orthodox to Reform and from Renewal to secular.

Let's start with a few "given realities", based on the fact that this organization is the successor to the original Conference for Alternatives in Jewish Education (CAJE), that held conferences for 33 years with as many as 700 for Shabbat and 2,500 for Sunday through Thursday. You already know that in any group of Jews, there are likely to be at least a few people who need to \ want to say the Mourners' Kaddish at least once daily, if not three times each day.

You also know that an Orthodox Minyan will not count women, but the other groups will. There will be folks who want to attend services that they recognize from home, and there will be other folks who want to try a different worship experience that they cannot \ will not have at home. Then there are the many new alternative services: Yoga, Dance, Mystical, Nature, and others.

To be fair, it was actually easier to offer seven very different Shabbat services simultaneously with 700 Shabbat attendees than with 200 nowadays. One can only split up 200 daveners so many ways before NO group has a Minyan, given that some folks will skip services altogether. However, the good news is that no one is in a rush on Shabbat, and three or four simultaneous Minyanim now work well to offer plenty of variety for the current 200–300 Shabbat attendees.

There are new challenges when the rest of 500–700 conference attendees arrive on Sunday! The pressing issues are: 1) WHERE to hold services, so that people can attend them and still get to meals and workshops (200+ in three-and-a-half days); and 2) WHEN to hold services, so that people do not miss meals and/or workshops when they want to daven or say Kaddish. Will people from different denominations be willing to share a middle-of-the-road daily service?

NewCAJE, the successor organization to the 33 years of the original CAJE, has been blessed with eight conferences in a row where Jewish educators from Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, Renewal, Chavurah, and secular all join together in fellowship and a surfeit of shared learning opportunities. We teach each other in 200+ 90-minute workshops, and we DO daven together three times each day, so that people can say Kaddish and share worship.

So far, the only weekday service where we have not davenned together has been the Monday morning Women's Minyan, a Conservative educational experience meant to teach women who still do not have an opportunity to lead services in their home congregations. All the other daily Minyanim have been "Traditional Egalitarian", which means a Conservative service with extra English readings added, for those who have less familiarity with an all-Hebrew format.

One may ask: "What about the Orthodox, who will not count women or daven without a barrier separating the genders?" The answer has been unique to CAJE and now NewCAJE: either a "Triple Mechitzah" with areas for men on one side, women on the other side, and mixed in the middle; or simply the Orthodox men standing in the very front of the mixed group. Usually the men are content to let the rest of us count them in our Minyan, so people can say Kaddish.

Remember, you are the Conference Coordinator, so it is your task to find a central location for the daily services, ideally close to the Dining Hall. You also have to schedule times for these services, so that everyone can get to their meals and workshops on time. Maybe you want to ask for some advice from that Cantor who has attended 36 of the past 41 conferences?! : )
