However, after walking into their lunch period and talking to them, I decided that I had to share what their big hearts were truly thankful for ? the love and protection they all receive from this school, administrators, but especially for Deputy Karn. I walked in expecting to receive wild answers of what they were thankful for, but instead walked in only to see our Deputy sitting in the middle of a table full of second graders eating lunch with them. I walked around asking each table what they were thankful for, telling them it could be silly, crazy, or serious. However, what stuck out the most to me was the fact that at every single table, the kids mentioned how thankful they were for this school and our Deputy! They expressed how thankful they are for the security and protection they feel when walking into school every day. They appreciate the administrators so much, but Deputy Karn seems to hold a special place in their hearts! For such young kids, they have big hearts and I feel like we should learn a lesson from them; never take for granted the safety and protection this school gives and the love that the faculty has for us. -The Trendsetter Dr e s s i n g u p Fo r a Cause It w as the day before Hallow een, October 30th, w hen New ton had some unexpected/ strange visitors enter the High School. Our "Lit t le" TownPleasant Hill was first established in 1866. The town was previously called

Newton. The town is home to 1,200 people and covers only one square mile. A statue that represents the fallen soldiers from the civil war is what most people remember about Pleasant Hill because it lies smack in the middle of the town.

Pleasant Hill is home to various famous people including:

Jesse Beery: A famous horse trainer and writer

Roy Plunket t : Invented Teflon (in all pots and pans that we use today)

Dan West : Founder of Heifer International (charitable organization)

The location of Newton Local Schools has been a part of the town since 1923, and the first class to graduate was the Class of 1924. The town of Pleasant Hill will always be a special place for so many people, as well as myself. In fact, when I graduate this year it will be the fourth generation of my family to do so! So, as you go on in your daily lives, always remember the people who gave you the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, because they are the people of Pleasant Hill and the ones that make our ?little? town so special.

There?s No Place Like Newt on, There?s No Place Like Newt on, There?s No Place Like Newt on

If you are familiar with the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz then you know the one place Dorothy wants to return throughout the movie?s entirety is home. In fact, to finally get to where she most desires she repeats the now famous line ?There is no place like home.? Much like Dorothy, the staff at Newton feels that there is indeed, no place like it! As a matter of fact, over 15 staff members have graduated from Newton and have found themselves now ?back at home.?

Our very own Patty Deeter graduated in 1972 and has been working with the Kindergarten, First and Second grade classes since 1996. One of her favorite High School memories was how packed the gym would get for basketball games. On some nights "it was standing room only and sometimes they even had to turn people away!" She really loves that she is still able to take part of the great sense of community that Newton offers. Similarly, Mrs. Cosby, a 1999 graduate commented that it is "still a great school and great kids with that small town community feel." Mrs. Cosby has been teaching for 12 years and 6 of those have been teaching Art to all grade levels at Newton. She remembers Mrs. McClurg was her Kindergarten teacher and even claims Mr. Armentrout still says her senior class was "his best class ever!"

A big difference that many staff members pointed out was the new technology available to students. Our High School Science teacher, Miss Short, and High School Secretary, Crystal Brunswick both graduated in 1989. Crystal stated that we had Chalkboards instead of Smart Boards and Miss Short remembers that computers started showing up when she was in Junior High. Our High School Secretary, Maryjo Prickett, a 1975 graduate, explained that there was no social media when she was in school so they "actually wrote notes by hand and used a rotary phone on a party line!"

However, no matter the time and changes our world experiences, Newton is a place that proudly demonstrates our deep connections as shown through Jane Gearhardt, Media Specialist and 1979 graduate from Newton/Upper Valley JVS. She explained that in a few short years "there will have been five generations of her family proudly calling Newton their alma mater!" It is a place that students can be lucky enough to return to and have... as staff :)
