INDUSTRY PROFILE
Cotton
Cottonis a soft, staple fiber that grows around the seeds of the cottonplant. It is a natural fiber harvested from the cotton plant. The fiber most often is spun
into arn or thread and used to ma!e a soft, breathable te"tile, which is the most widel
used natural#fiber cloth in clothing toda.
Processing of Cotton in India
In India the raw cotton, also called as $apas is processed in a multi#stage
process described as below. The Products of processing are
I. Yarn.
II. Cottonseed Oil.
III. Cottonseed Meal.
I. Production of Yarn
!P!S TO LINT"$apas %also !nown as raw cotton or seed cotton is unginned cottonor the white fibrous substance covering the seed that is obtained from the cotton plant.
The first step in the process is, the cotton is vacuumed into tubes that carr it to a drer
to reduce moisture and improve the fiber 'ualit. Then it runs through cleaning
e'uipment to remove leaf trash, stic!s and other foreign matter. In ginning a roller gin is
used to grab the fiber. The raw fiber, now called lint.
LINT TO #!LE" The lintma!es its wa through another series of pipes to a press
where it is compressed into bales%lint pac!aged for mar!et. After baling, the cotton lint
is hauled to either storage ards, te"tile mills, or shipped to foreign countries.
#!LE TO L!P( )ere the bales are bro!en down and a wor!er feeds the cotton into a
machine called a *brea!er* which gets rid of some of the dirt. +rom here the cotton goes
to a *scutcher*. %perated b a wor!er also called a scutcher. This machine cleans the
cotton of an remaining dirt and separates the fibers. The cotton emerges in the form of
thin *blan!et* called the *lap*.

L!P TO C!RDIN$( Carding is the process of pulling the fibers into parallel alignment
to form a thin web. )igh speed electronic e'uipment with wire toothed rollers performs
this tas!. The web of fibers is eventuall condensed into a continuous, untwisted, rope#
li!e strand called a sliver.
SLI%ER TO RO%IN$( The silver is then sent to combing machine. )ere, the fibers
shorter than half#inch and impurities are removed from the cotton. The sliver is drawn
out to a thinner strand and given a slight twist to improve strength, then wound on
bobbins. This Process is called /oving.
RO%IN$ TO Y!RN &SPINNIN$'( 0pinning is the last process in arn manufacturing.
0pinning draws out the short fibers from the mass of cotton and twists them together into
a long. 0pinning machines have a metal spi!e called a spindle which the thread winds
around.
II. Production of Cotton Seed Oil
Processing of cottonseed in modern mills involves a number of steps. The are as
follows(
The first step is its entr into the s(a)er roo*where, through a number of
screens and air e'uipment, twigs, leaves and other trash are removed.
The cleaned seedis then sent to gin stands where the lintersare removed from
the seed %delinted. The linters of the highest grade, referred to as first+cut linters
are used in manufacturing non#chemical products, such as medical supplies,
twine, and candle wic!s. The second+cut linters removed in further delinting
steps, are incorporated in chemical products, found in various foods, toiletries,
film, and paper.
The delinted seeds now go to the huller. The (ullerremoves the tough seed coat
with a series of )ni,es and s(a)ers. The )ni,es cut t(e (ulls%tough outer shell

of the seed to loosen them from the )ernels%the inside meat of the seed, rich in
oil and s(a)ers se-arate t(e (ulls and )ernels.
The !ernels are now read for oil etraction. The pass through fla!ing rollers
made of heav cast iron, spinning at high speeds. This presses the meats into thin
fla!es. These fla!es then travel to a coo!er where the are coo!ed at 23 degrees
+ to reduce their moisture levels. The prepared meats are conveed to the
e"tractor and washed with he"ane %organic solvent that dissolves out the oil
removing up to 456 of the oil.
Crude cottonseed oil re'uires furt(er -rocessingbefore it ma be used for food.
The first step in this process is refining. 7ith the scientific use of heat, sodium
hdro"ide and a centrifuge %e'uipment used to separate substances through
spinning action, the dar! colored crude oil is transformed into a transparent,
ellow oil. This clear oil ma then be bleached with a special bleaching cla to
produce a trans-arent/ a*0er colored oil.
The refined cotton seed oil has several advantages other than edible oils. It contains
mere advantage over other edible oils. It contains a large percentage of Pol1
Unsaturated Fatt1 !cids%PUF! which maintain cholesterol in the blood at a health
level. The 'ualit of cotton oil depends on the weather prevailing during the time that
cotton stands in the fields after coming to maturit. )ence 'ualit of oil varies from
place to place and season to season. The 'ualit of oil is high in dr seasons and low
when the seed is e"posed to wet weather in the fields or handled or stored with high
moisture. +urther cotton seed coo!ing oil has a long span of life due to the presence of
vitamin -.

Cotton -roduction !reas in India
India is an important grower of cotton on a global scale. It ran!s third in
global cotton production after the @nited 0tates and China; with 4.3 million hectares
grown each ear, India accounts for appro"imatel 16 of the worlds total cotton area
and 96 of global cotton production.
The Cotton producing areas in India are spread throughout the countr.
But the ma=or cotton producing states which account for more than 46 of the area
under and output are(
. Pun=ab.
1. )arana.
9. /a=asthan.
?. Maharashtra.
. >u=arat.
. Madha Pradesh.
2. Andhra Pradesh.
5. Tamil :adu.
4. $arnata!a.

But the ields of cotton in India are low, with an average ield of 39
!g8ha compared to the world average of 29? !g8ha. The problem is also compounded b
higher production costs and poor 'ualit in terms of varietals purit and trash content.

emploment in the farm, mar!eting and processing sectors. Cotton te"tiles along with
other te"tiles also contribute about 89rd of the Indian e"ports.
Ste-s ta)en 01 t(e Cotton Producers in India
:ow#a#das the Indian Cotton producers are continuousl wor!ing to up#
grade the 'ualit and increase the cotton production to cope up with the increased global
demand for cotton te"tiles and to meet the needs of the 94 million spindles capacit ofthe domestic te"tile industr which presentl consumes about 1#? million bales
annuall.
In India, cotton ields increased significantl in the 453Ds and through
the first half of 453Ds but since 44 there is no increase in ield. In the past, the
increase in cost of production of cotton was partiall offset b increase in ield but now
with stagnant ield the cost of production is raising. Besides low ield, Indian cotton also
suffers from inconsistent 'ualit in terms of length, micron ire and strength.

The Cotton production policies in India historicall have been oriented
toward promoting and supporting the te"tile industr. The >overnment of India

The Cotton Corporation of India Ftd. for the ear 1332#35 had purchased
3.93 la!h 'uintals of !appaDs e'uivalent to .22 la!h bales valuing /s.15.23 crores
in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madha Pradesh, rissa and $arnata!a. Beside these
the Corporation had also carried out commercial operations and purchased 1.2 la!h
bales valuing /s.15.51 crores in the ear 133#32 as compared to around .33 la!h
bales valuing /s.35.5 crores during the previous ear %i.e. for the ear 133#32.
E-orts of Cotton
The main mar!et for Indian cotton e"port is China. The other mar!ets also
include Taiwan, Thailand and Tur!e. In Gul 133, the union government removed all
curbs on cotton e"ports. As a result of these, now the e"porters are not re'uired to obtain
an certificate from the Te"tile Commissioner on the registration, allocation, 'ualit and'uantit of e"port. India e"ported around 1 per cent cotton during 133#32 and it is
estimated nearl 1 per cent e"ported to China.
Huring the ear 133#32 the prices of Indian cotton in earl part of the
season being lower than the international prices, had been attractive to foreign buers
and there was good demand for Indian cotton, especiall 0#, )#? and Bunn, which had
resulted in sustained cotton e"ports, which are estimated at .33 la!h bales
The Cotton Advisor Board estimated an 5#13 percent increase in cotton
e"ports to la!h bales for ct 1332# 0ep 1335, as against its Aug 1332 estimate of 5

Hespite good domestic crops, India is importing cotton because of 'ualit
problems or low world prices particularl for processing into e"portable products li!e
arns and fabrics.
India imported =ust 21,333 bales of cotton in 1339#3?. The imports rose
to ,12,333 la!h bales in 133?#3, ?,233,333 la!h bales in 133#3 and the anticipated
imports for the ear 133#32 are 3,333 la!h bales.

Role of cottonseed *eal in Indian Econo*1
India produces around 1 million tons of cottonseed meal a ear. )owever,
in India mainl undecorticated meal is largel produced. 0everal associations are
promoting the production of decorticated ca!e in India and the production of this is
e"pected to increase in the countr.
India used to be a ma=or e"porter of cottonseed e"traction around two
decades ago. )owever, the demand for other oil meals li!e so meal, has lowered the
cottonseed demand globall. In addition, the low availabilit of decorticated meal in
India has also been a ma=or reason for the fall in e"ports.
The ma=or importers of Indian cottonseed meal %undecorticated used to
be Thailand. India in 1331#39 e"ported onl 3 tons of decorticated cottonseed meal. In
1339#3?, too there have been no significant e"ports. India does not import cottonseedmeal.

32. >u=arat has turned into a largest cotton producing 0tate with a record production#
level of 49 la!h bales constituting around 9?6 of the countrDs total production.
The area under cotton cultivation during 1332#35 has also gone up b
around 6 at 4.5 la!h hectares as against 5.22 la!h hectares during 133#3.
7ith wide usage of hbrid seeds throughout the countr as well as
changed mindset of cotton farmers for adoption of better and improved farm practices,
the average productivit of cotton has crossed 39 !gs per hectare as against ?25 !gs
during the previous ear.
The prices of Indian cotton in earl part of the season being lower than
the international prices had been attractive to foreign buers and there was good demand
for Indian cotton.
Hue to e"pectation of bumper crop, the mill demand in the beginning of
the season was subdued which put pressure on the cotton prices right from the beginning
of the season and has resulted into fall in cotton prices between ctober 133 & Ganuar
1332. Cotton prices reached its pea! level b end#March 1332 and there was some
correction in cotton prices in April and Ma 1332. )owever, on the whole, cotton prices
remained better b almost /s.333 per cand in almost all varieties as compared to
previous ear.
Future of Cotton Industr1 in India
The Cotton Advisor Board %CAB has estimated the cotton crop at 93
la!h bales for the current season 1335#34. This is a historic high and represents a 6
=ump over last ears crop estimate of 153 la!h bales. The increase in cotton production
area is also e"pected to increase to 4.93 la!h hectares for the season 1332#35 against
4.?1 la!h hectares for the season 133#32.
Cotton Advisor Board e"pects e"ports to be higher at la!h bales as
against la!h bales in 1332#35. Imports in 1335#34 are pro=ected at .3 la!h bales as

MBA Programme Tirumala Cotton & Agro Products
compared to .3 la!h bales in 1332#35, because mills have to rel on foreign growths to
spin some finer counts of arn.
It is also estimated that the cotton industr is going to provide 1 million
new =obs mainl for the semi#s!illed and uns!illed labor.
Hespite the progress enunciated above, cotton ield per hectare in India is
one of the lowest in the world. /eliance on rain, a wee! seed suppl sstem, small land
holding, poor weed control and scant use of integrated pest management technologies
are responsible for the low ield.
