ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Inner South Region 2016 Conference - ‘Reimagining Education’ Gayle Yardley and I attended the 3 day 2016 Inner South Region Conference last week. Learnings from some of the presenters were: Tracey Ezard, focused on building the key pillars of learning intelligence for leaders and staff. She demonstrated the most effective ways to drive momentum and create a growth mindset. The strong message was that we all need to step outside our ‘comfort zone’ to create a thriving and collaborative learning culture. Professor Pankaj Sah, a neurobiologist and head of Synaptic Plasticity at Queensland Brain Institute focused on the current research being conducted around the way we learn. He explained how we store memory and the content that is remembered. Prof. Sah discussed the importance of the feedback loop where teachers test, teach, test and give timely feedback. Students are less likely to forget information as they receive reinforcement and feedback. Hugh Van Cuylenburg, founder of The Resilience Project provided us with many wonderful stories that illustrated his growing awareness of students’ resilience and positive attitude in countries such Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. Children and adults who he met possessed strong mental resilience with the emphasis on the values of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. Hugh noted that in a number of Australian children’s lives they infrequently experience setbacks or failures. He explained exercises he did with primary aged students to enable them to appreciate the important gifts around them, such as

INFORMATION SENT HOME WITH STUDENTS TODAY We’re pleased to inform you that we have just launched a school app. The school will be using the app to send out the school newsletter, general updates, reminders, events and much, much more! The app is called tiqbiz and is available on iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android Phone, Android Tablet and Windows phone devices. If you don’t have a mobile device, there is also an app available for computer, both Mac and PC. We kindly ask that you download tiqbiz to one of these devices, register a free account then find and tick the school. When you are ticking the school boxes, please make sure you tick on “Whole School” and the specific grades/years that apply to your family.

You’ll receive all the information with a push notification – much like a text message directly to your device. Any last minute changes or reminders, we’ll be able to reach you to keep you completely informed and up-to-date. The app has some great features that will allow us to get information through easily and quickly, you’ll be reminded about important calendar dates 24 hours before, and everything we post can be translated into one of 91 languages! You will also be able to submit student absence via the app now, authorised by your signature, electronically signed straight onto the screen with your finger! Assisting with Reading Parent Session Last Wednesday our three teaching and learning support staff, Sara Wyse, Prudence Herron and Labreni Pappas, spoke to parent helpers about how to assist children with reading. The presentation was informative and offered strategies to support the reading process. Thank you to the parents who attended for your commitment to the reading program and to the teaching staff for their management and collaboration towards making this a successful session. It’s Coming!! Caulfield South P.S. is preparing to fully launch its new communication app at the beginning of Term 2 (Monday April 11th). Thanks go to our leading teacher, Justin Cole, for paving the way with our Caulfield South app which, introduced our whole school community to the instantaneous electronic methods of communication. We will be interested in your feedback regarding this new app. Icy Pole Thank You A very special thank you to Dana Michael & Romy Pamensky who very generously donated all the icy poles and distributed them each Friday to the whole school. The students have been most appreciative of these treats, especially during their swimming lessons. The 4 Friday Icy Pole days raised a total $1374. Thank you, Dana and Romy! This fundraising effort will go towards the new natural sensory play space. Come along to the Working Bee- Year 6 and Year 1 grade levels! On Sunday April 17th from 10am until 1pm parents and students from Year 6 and Year 1 grade levels are asked to give some time volunteer time to improve our grounds. Sand pits need replenishing; the front driveway is badly in need of more red scoria to offset the newly planted and weeded garden beds, thank you to Lubana Squire. This year we are combining year levels to promote our strong CSPS community and give parents and students the opportunity to come together. PEACEMAKERS The Caulfield South Primary Peacemakers have been busy doing their important work in the playground over the last few weeks. Having completed their training course on mediation and problem solving skills, the Peacemakers have been enthusiastically helping some of our students to find agreeable solutions to their playground problems and disputes. Working in teams, the Peacemakers follow a six step mediation strategy when working with other students. In addition to that, the Peacemakers have been watching out for students who are showing this month's focus PYP Attitude, empathy. When the Peacemakers see a student demonstrating this attitude in the playground they enter them in the monthly draw to win the PYP Attitude prize at an upcoming assembly. Parents are reminded that if you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for the CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student misses out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government's commitment to breaking the link between a student's background and their achievements. Indoor plants have a host of proven health and wellbeing benefits: • decrease stress and create calm • improve concentration and productivity • engaging with nature positively affects our mood.

Succulents multiply like rabbits and can be propagated from just a single leaf. So, while Bunnings are donating soil, pots and moisture meters, we need parents to… Please donate your succulents! By snipping off a leaf or cutting, you can help our students learn and thrive.
