tips to write clickable email subject lines
TRANSCRIPT
MIND THE CHARACTER LIMITS
Email subject line appears differently on different devices
and clients (view the chart below). So you’d better write
concisely (less than 50 characters).
MIND THE CHARACTER LIMITS
• If you use email marketing tools, the number of characters will
be automatically counted for you
• If you write in Google Docs (like me), highlight your subject line
and choose Tools >> Word count
• You can also use online word count tools, some can even assess
readability level of your sentence. Wordcountools, Wordcounter.

DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR GRAMMAR
Here are some tools to check your writing:
• Grammarly: a powerful extension on Chrome. This tool has your
back not only when writing subject lines but in any writing
purposes.
Though it’s quite rare to have grammar mistakes in email
subject lines (it’s just 1 or 2 sentences, right?), believe me,
you won’t want to leave bad impression by any ridiculous
grammar mistakes or typos.
LEVERAGE EMOJIS
Emoji list – copy and paste
We all know that subject line is limited in length, that’s
why emojis come along. Using emojis saves places for
other important informations, conveys emotion and helps
your email stand out in a messy inbox.
How to use emojis? Just copy emojis you like here and
paste into your email subject line. But keep in mind the
depends on the email clients, your emojis may be
displayed differently.
ASK A QUESTION
Look at these two subject lines, which one seems to be
more compelling to you?
• A: Here are some mistakes that many people make.
• B: Are you making these SEO mistakes?
With me, it’s clearly the B version. Because I also want to
know AM I making those SEO mistakes. In this case, the
topic defines my issue, not anyone else.
Asking the right question can really draw attention of the
audiences. You know it’s “right” when putting yourself in
your audiences’ shoes, read the question and the answer
is what you are looking for!
CHECK SUBJECT LINE KEYWORD
Recently I ran into a tool called ‘Email subject line keyword
checker’ in which you type the main keyword of your
subject line, choose the type of email and the tool will give
you the estimated performance compared to average stats.
Though there are many factors beside the main keyword,
this tool can give you a snapshot of the performance of the
word that you’d like to use.
