Tips for Successful Preschool Family Workshops

• Let parents/caregivers know about the upcoming workshop several weeks in advance, and provide weekly reminders through flyers, notes home, etc.

• If possible, schedule two different times for the workshop – once during the day and once in the evening – to meet the needs of families with different work schedules.

• Provide refreshments of some sort, even if it is something small, and a meal if your budget allows it.

• Have a door prize drawing at the end of the workshop. The door prize does not have to be expensive – a $25 gift card to Wal-Mart would be very popular.

• Allow parents/caregivers to bring children to the workshop, and have staff available to provide care and child-friendly activities in another area.

• Create a welcoming environment when the families first arrive – for example, record the preschool children singing a song, and play it before the workshop starts.

• If you serve families who speak a language other than English at home, provide materials in their home language and a translator if possible.

• Include an activity during the workshop so that it isn’t just a long lecture – for example, set up different preschool writing activities and let parents and children rotate through the stations together.

• Include something for families to take home after the workshop is over – a new children’s book, a literacy bag with activities, or a writing journal can all be used to promote preschool literacy at home.

• Have evaluation surveys at the end of the workshop so families can rate the quality of the information provided and give feedback on what future topics for family workshops would be most useful to them.
