Tips for Searching Digital Collections

On the IHS home page (www.indianahistory.org) go to the Explore tab and select

Our Collections. Click on See our Digital Collections overlaid on the image. The digital

collection can also be accessed directly through the URL images.indianahistory.org

Search Across all Collections

Use the search box in the top right corner of the homepage. The default search is All the Words.

When the results are displayed you have the option to narrow your results by using the menu on

the left to find results by Collection, Subject, Date, or Format of original.

Another way to narrow your results when searching across all collections is to use and to

connect your search term with another keyword. For example typing the search “aprons and

food” in the main search box would return all of the items that contain the word aprons as well

as food.

Advanced Search

Click Advanced Search on the top right corner of the IHS Digital Collection homepage to

access the advanced search features. Advance Search helps you narrow your search by

Collection, metadata Field, and/or Date. (see example screen below)

• Select specific Collections to search by selecting or de-selecting the checkbox next to the

collection name.

• In addition, you can search metadata Fields from the drop-down menu such as Title,

Subject, Owning Institution, Time Period, Geographic Location, and more. If you want to

search more than one field you can click +Add Row to add another field to your search.

You can limit your keyword search in Fields to “all of the words,” “any of the words,”

“exact phrase” or “none of the words.”

• Finally, you can narrow your search Dates by choosing typing in the date in the format

YYYY, YYYY-MM, or YYYY-MM-DD (i.e. 2020-09-06) and choosing from the drop-

down menu “on” the date, “after” the date, “before” the date, or “between two dates.

• Click the Search button to complete your advanced search!

Wildcard Search

A wildcard search can be performed by adding an asterisk (*) to the end of a root word. The

asterisk can indicate any number of letters. The wildcard search will give you all results relating

to the root keyword. For example, typing EDUCAT* into the main search box will return any

records containing: EDUCATION, EDUCATOR, EDUCATING, EDUCATE, etc.
