TRANSCRIPT
Vol. 10 Trinity United Methodist Church, Sarasota, FL October, 2017
Whose job is it to grow Christ’s church? Is it the pastor’s? The staff? The leaders? God brings growth through the faithfulness of each believer doing their part. Paul reminds us in 1 Co-rinthians 3:6 “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” Someone else can’t plant your seed or water your crop. You have the gift and responsibility of Christian influence with those you know. Without your involvement, how will they come to Christ, how will His church grow? Imagine if each of us invited just one person. Imagine the excitement and power of new people com-ing to know the hope, healing, and peace of Jesus Christ for themselves. Look through the Acorn and pray for God to reveal the activity and person you will be inviting each week. – Lisa <><
Tips for Inviting People to Worship, a Small Group, or Another Church Activity By Doug Powe 1. The invitation should be about a genuine connection and not staged. It is best to invite in-dividuals to an event that has bearing on their life or appeals to their interests. It comes across as a genuine connection and not something staged that comes out of left field. I might say, for instance, “I have an extra ticket to hear that new group you like on Friday at 7. I would love for you to come with me.” The connection is authentic because they have an interest in the group. If we translate this to inviting someone to church, then we share with them how the new sermon series on addictions may be helpful as they deal with a child in rehabilitation. The point is the invitation comes across as thoughtful and something that connects with the other person. 2. Be specific. Often, when we do invite, our invitations are very general. If I say to someone, “come to dinner at my house on Sunday,” it leaves out important information, like the time of dinner and where I live. A better dinner invitation is “come over at 5 p.m. on Sunday and my address is 123 Main Street, which I will text you so you can Google directions.” The same principle applies to church. Simply saying, “Why don’t you come to my church on Sunday,” is not as specific as “I would love for you to come to Main Street Congregation at 10 a.m. Our address is 123 Main Street, and I will meet you in the parking lot.” Be specific! 3. Be honest about what we know and do not know. Another reason many of us do not invite is that we are afraid someone may ask us questions to which we do not know the answer, such as, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” It is okay if we do not have all the answers. In many cases others are relieved that we do not know everything. This communicates to others that you are not trying to sell them a bill of goods. We all have been in situations where a salesperson was willing to tell us anything to get us to buy the product. To exaggerate the point, imagine a salesperson say-ing you need this vacuum cleaner (that works well on shag carpet) when they know you only have hardwood floors in the house. This would leave a bad taste in your mouth. Honesty goes a long way and individuals respect those who are upfront with them. 4. It is important to invite with expectant hope. Do not invite with a defeatist attitude. There are times when we so underplay the invitation it comes across as if we really do not want the other person to come. For instance, a friend saying, “My family reunion is on Saturday. It probably won’t be fun, but you might want to come if you have absolutely nothing else to do.” This is not a compelling invite! But it’s equally important not to go to the opposite extreme and be overly effusive. The goal is an invitation that leaves space for others to say yes without painting an overly negative or rosy pic-ture. Inviting others to anything is a scary proposition. This is especially true for church because of the personal nature of faith. I believe it is helpful to make a genuine connection, be specific, be honest and avoid shading the picture too bleakly or too rosily. Ultimately, we are inviting others to experi-ence a transforming relationship with God.

Sermon Series
New Sermon Series: The Seven Essentials The Pray for Me Prayer Guide is structured around what author Tony Souder identifies as The 7 Essentials. He believes these seven aspects of life must be noticed and nurtured for someone to flourish in faithful living. The 7 Essentials come directly from two passages of the Bible, but their importance saturates all of Scrip-ture. The first two come from Luke 2:52, “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.” The other five Essentials are found in 1 Timothy 4:12, “Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” October 1 Holy Communion at both services The Seven Essentials: Wisdom Philippians 1:9-11; Ephesians 1:17-19; Jeremiah 9:23-24 October 8 The Seven Essentials: Love John 3:16-17; Romans 5:6-8; 1 John 4:9-11 October 15 The Seven Essentials: Faith Job 42:2; Isaiah 26:3-4; Matthew 8:1-13 October 22 Sunday to Turn in Pledge Cards The Seven Essentials: Purity Proverbs 4:23; Mark 7:20-23; Matthew 23:23-28 October 29 All Saints Day Remembrance at both services 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation The Seven Essentials: Speech Ephesians 4:25-5:2

From LaTerry
YOUR CHRISTMAS TESTIMONY TO MUSIC
Last month, this writer and this article proposed something so radical, so revolutionary, and so
different it is actually Biblical… “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one
another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to
God.” Colossians 3:16
How that Scripture relates to Trinity UMC is where we will do something a bit different this year in
preparation for the Advent and Christmas Season.
We are seeking to have a minimum of 6, or 7 individuals or couples and/or family members who
would be willing to write a minimum ½ page (4 to 5 paragraphs) to a maximum 1 page (7 to 9 par-
agraphs) real life recollection story on the following topic:
“When, (at what point), and ‘How’ did the ‘Christ’ in Christmas become most real in your LIFE?”
In other words, these efforts will be short stories about the most spiritually significant Christmas in
your life and why!
They must be personally delivered or submitted by e-mail to: [email protected] by the end of the month of October, 2017 due to actual necessary preparation time limits. After receiving these stories, I will endeavor to locate the most suitable seasonal song(s) or musi-
cal selection(s) that would best match the theme of your writing, and then build a short musical
work around your particular story to be presented at a point throughout Advent! Your story in writ-
ing will be read and presented with music from beginning to end of your narrative. You would
have the option of choosing or not choosing to personally read your story for the actual presenta-
tion.
AND, if you join the choir, you may even get to have a say on what song you’d like to go along
with your story!!
Because this will be such a blessed witness to the congregation, members and friends, it would
be preferred that no anonymous entrees be made.
Several individuals have expressed their interest. One individual asked if submitting a story about
the last Christmas with a particular Loved One would be too personal? Not if God is part of it. If
God is part of your story, then it becomes your personal testimony!
So… Are you really ready to do something a bit different for this coming Christmas season, Trinity
UMC?

Photo Directory
To celebrate our church family and strengthen the bond within our congregation, we have made the commitment to produce a new fellowship pictorial directory.
A pictorial directory is our church family album. A new directory:
Preserves this special time in the life and ministry of our church
Becomes a lasting record of our current membership
Introduces our church to friends, the community and new members
Enhances fellowship by helping us visually connect faces with names
Becomes a communication tool for our congregation
We have selected Lifetouch Church Directories and Portraits to service our congregation. Lifetouch is providing the directory at no cost to our church. Plus, every family photographed receives a compli-mentary directory and an 8x10 portrait! You can sign up at the church on Sunday mornings beginning October 8th.
For your convenience, all photography and portrait viewing will take place at our church. You will have a variety of poses taken, and Lifetouch never charges a sitting fee! One pose will be selected for the directory. In addition to your complimentary 8xl0, you will have the opportunity to purchase additional portraits at attractive prices on the day of your portrait session.
You also have the opportunity to invite your extended family and have portraits made with everyone together. Just schedule together and add additional time spots for each of your extended family units. Each family unit will be photographed and receive their own complimentary 8x10 portrait. Lifetouch will then photograph generational poses with everyone together, grandparents and grandkids, or any special poses you would like to have. The additional families count towards our program but will not necessarily be included in our directory.
In addition, think about the outreach opportunity if “every family brings a family”! Invite a family or friend in your neighborhood to come and receive their own complimentary 8x10 portrait. These addi-tional families will also count towards our program, but most important, think about the outreach op-portunity we will have to follow up with them. Perhaps this event will be the first contact we have in leading them to a relationship with Christ and a relationship with us as their church family!
We are looking forward to seeing you in our directory!
Sherrill Carr, Coordinator, and the United Methodist Women
P.S. This is a professional portrait session. What you wear has a major influence on how satisfied you will be with your portraits. Watch for your Portrait Sitting Guide with tips on how to prepare for your session. We also ask that you allow one hour during which time you will check-in, be photographed and select your portraits.
“Have you heard the latest?”
We have secured dates with Lifetouch for a new pictorial direc-tory! And we want everyone to participate…
Make your photography appointment beginning October 8th.
This is a fun, free, professional photo event where you will re-ceive a beautiful, complimentary 8x10 portrait plus a free copy of our directory! Invite other family members, friends; bring your pet and your meaningful items! Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to connect our families…We need YOU to make our directory complete!

Traveling around our state, I have seen with my own eyes the courage of our pastors and the vul-nerability of many of our impoverished com-munities who were hit hard by this storm. Thank you for what you have already done and for your willingness to continue to be a part of the short-term relief and long-term re-covery efforts. God will use these efforts to further extend our witness into our communi-ties. We encourage churches to continue to give to UMCOR. 100% of donations go to relief work.

Trinity is Moving Forward with Christ
Soon you will receive your 2018 Faith Pledge Card. Your pledge makes it possible for us to create a thoughtful, faithful budget to fund the operating budget of our church home. These donations fund staff salaries, building mainte-nance, utilities, our denominational mission work through apportionment giving, and some of our local programming and mission expenses, including Day of Hope. Please pray, fill out your card, and return it to us as soon as possible. We need all pledges in no later than Sunday, October 22 to finish our 2018 budget work before the holidays. Your Faith Pledge is not a contract, but an estimate of your intentions. We understand you’re mak-ing your best guess on what you hope you can do. Your faith pledge may be changed at any time by simply notifying the church financial secretary at 941-924-7756. Additional Offerings Throughout the year, we offer additional giving opportunities above your faith pledge giving. These special offerings include giving to the Trinity Preschool, Trinity Scholarships, sending students to Summer Camp, our covenant missionary Connie DiLeo, The Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, and others. Your faith pledge does not include these additional offerings. Electronic Giving Many persons find it easier to set up an automatic withdrawal for their regular offerings. This allows you the convenience and ease of making your contributions electronically, even if you are out of town. You can set this up in a couple of ways. 1. Set up an automatic withdrawal from one of your bank accounts. Go to the online bill paying page of your bank account. Fill in the information to name Trinity Sara-sota as a recipient, the frequency of your donation, and the amount of your donation. Your bank will send us a check on your behalf as you designate. 2. Set up an electronic gift through our website. (www.iTrinity.org) By logging on to our portal, you will be able to make a one-time gift to the operating budget or a spe-cial project from your check/savings account or your credit/debit card. (We are charged some fees if you use your credit card). You will also be able to set up a reoccurring contribution. 3. Set up an electronic gift from your smartphone with the Joyfully2UMC App Same idea as using our website, just the added convenience of using your phone. We have “giving coaches” available to help you set up your web or smartphone giving should you need assistance. Call the church office to schedule. If you’re setting up an electronic reoccurring gift as your faith pledge to the operating budget, please let us know on your faith pledge card.

Yours, O Lord, are the greatness, the
power, the glory, the victory, and the
majesty; for all that is in the heavens and
on the earth is yours
Yours is the kingdom, O Lord,
and you are exalted as head above all.
Riches and honor come from you,
and you rule over all.
In your hand are power and might;
and it is in your hand to make great
and to give strength to all.
And now, our God, we give thanks to
you and praise your glorious name.

All of your individual and collective prayers are so appreciated and still definitely needed.
I have enjoyed and appreciated every card.
