PROTECTIVE COVERS FOR PIN AND PILLARINSULATORS
These covers are used to protect an energized conductor close to a cap pin or pillar insulator, being normallyused together with the conductor covers, to which they can be connected using the standardized fittings.
There are three available models, one for each type of job and voltage level:
- M 4947 - Traditional model to be used with regular pin insulators and pollution-proof pin insulators .
- FLV-11050 - New resized model to be used with porcelain, tempered glass or polymeric pin insul ator, besidespillar insulators. Due to its reduced shape, this protective cover is perfect for CDS (Compact DistributionSystems), where the space between the phases is smaller than usual.
- C406-0046 - It divided in two pieces, that are used superposed, providing a high dielectr ic strength, allowing itto be used in voltages up to 48.3 kV.
All the models have metallic eyes, which allow them to be installed by using a grip-all stick.

USE, HANDLING AND MAINTENANCE
The PROTECTIVE COVERS FOR HOT LINES, are one of the most important equipments used whenworking with low, medium and high voltage energized systems. It is used to insulate electrically the working area, avoiding contacts between phases or phase-ground,during the maintenance jobs. The PROTECTIVE COVERS FOR HOT LINES are essential during Bare Hand maintenance. The coversare installed with rubber gloves or at distance, using the gripp-all stick.Only linemen trained for hot line jobs should install them. The following rules shall be taken into consideration:
01 - Use only the PROPER COVER speci ally constructed to isol ate conductors, pin insulators, cappin insulators cutout switches, knife switches, shackles, spacers, a.s.o.IMPORTANT:
Allways use rubber gloves in order to touch or instal protective covers. The linemen must be aware of thisworking position and working distance from the protective covers, avoiding accidental contact. This arebasic rules for any other cover used to protect energized parts.
02 - The protective covers for: poles, crossarms, horizontal supports, "C" supports and the circular coversare used to avoid contact between energized conductors or lashings and the grounded structuresurface.
03 - The protective covers shall be ha ndled carefully, to avoid breaking, cracking or scratching it. Theyshould also be kept clean and dry. Each protective cover must be carefully checked before its use, assuring that there are no cracks, deepscratches, changes of shape or other damages, and that they are clean and dry .If not clean they shall be cleaned with a dry cotton cloth. If this does not remove all the dirt, water andneutral soap can be used.
04 - Protective Covers are for TEMPORARY USE only. They should be taken off, whenever poss ible, at the end of each working day.

PRECAUTION
The protective covers have been designed in order to be used in many different working-situations. Theline men have to select carefully the most appropriate cover for each equipment avoiding dangerousimprovisations. Before/starting any maintenance-job the availability of the right covers in sufficientquantify has to be checked. The maintenance-job has to be postponed if there are not correct, clean and sufficient covers available. Theprotective covers are not designed to avoid contacts wheneve r using mechanical equipment.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The RITZ PROTECTIVE COVERS FOR HOT LINE, are made with high dielectric strength and ozoneresistant plastic. Its orange color, allows it to be seen easily, providing not only insulating protection but also an easyidentification of the working area. The protective covers des igned to be installed from the ground, have aluminum eyes, allowing its install ationto be made with a grip-all stick.THE RITZ PROTECTIVE COVERS FOR HOT LINES ARE MADE IN COMPLIENCE TO ASTM-F968STANDARD AND TESTED ACCORDING TO ASTM-F712 STANDARD.

These covers are used as a protection device, in the structures where there are cutout or knife switches. Theycan be installed with insulating gloves or from distance with a grip-all stick.
The knife switch cover is installed placing its longitudinal channeling between the two insulator sheds, to whichit is fixed by pressure.
The cutout switch cover is fixed with a wooden pin, which locks itself behind the insulator and sits over theswitch metallic support.

They have fittings in their ends. One end is for connection with the insulator and the other end is for connectionwith the conductor cover.
There are two available models: the traditional M4948, exclusive for cap pin insulators, and the new M4948-1model, with reduced size and lighter than the first one, also for cap pin insulators, besides polymeric and solidporcelain insulators.
Both models have metallic eyes, which allow them to be installed by using a grip-all stick.

These covers are used as an additional insulating device wheninstalling or replacing poles.
They have synthetic rope handles, to make its installation andremoval, easy to be done with rubber gloves .
The 1.200 mm and 1.800 mm length models, have a nylon cuff link thatallows connecting two or more covers, in order to protect a largerarea.
The inner fillets keep the insulating walls of the covers from touchingthe pole, what prevents grinding and contamination, granting bettergrip and protecting the insulating layer of the cover.
There are two diameter available: one to protect poles up to 230 mmdiameter and another to protect poles up to 300 mm diameter. Thelengths go from 300 mm through 1.800 mm.

Due to its versatility, these covers are adequate to protect pole tops, angle braces, crossarms, lightning arresters and so on.
Since they don't have a well defined application, each use requiresspecial consideration in order to decide whether or not the cover willoffer the necessary protection.
It has a synthetic rope handle to make its installation and removal aneasier task to be done with rubber gloves .

These covers are the ones which protect most of the energized conductors, and therefore, they are the mostcommon ones regarding hot line jobs.
There are many models available in order to satisfy the necessity of protection of the various types of electricalsystems with nominal voltage up to 48.3 kV.
Its ends have a fitting device which allows connection of two or more conductor covers, or even other types ofcovers, such as pin insulator covers and cap pin insulator covers .
Some models have metallic brackets with eyes, which allows the covers to be installed using a grip-all stick.
