Biographical note Born in 1961 in Newry, Seán Hillen lives and works in Dublin. He studied at Belfast College of Art, the London College of Printing and at the Slade School. His 1980’s photo-collages series like LondoNewry and Newry Gagarin were based on his own documentary photographs. Those photographs are now a Permanent Collection at the National Library. The early collages controversially challenged myths of Britain as ‘peacemaker’ in the conflict whilst accommodating and exploring the complexities of representation and of identity. The gently apocalyptic IRELANTIS series begun after moving back to Ireland in the 1990’s are mostly based on the already-hyperreal postcards of John Hinde and have themselves become part of the Irish cultural landscape, widely studied and featuring on over 30 book covers. His series in the 2000’s; Searching for Evidence.. and What’s Wrong? with The Consolations of Genius.. were related to the conflicting theories in the wake of the 9/11 events. He recently began new series reworking the Sistine Chapel ceiling to include kittens. A one-hour documentary on his life is in production for Irish television, and a book of his collages, designed by Erik Kessels, is in development. Visual Artists Ireland- Development Programme- Tipperary/Limerick/Clare ‘Communicating Your Practice’ with Conall Cary due to take place in Ormston House on Saturday the 5th October. The workshop is part of VAI’s Professional Development programme and is run in partnership with Ormston House with the support of Limerick Culture & Arts Department, Tipperary County Council and Clare County Council.

The workshop is designed to help with those moments when we wonder if people are going to understand what we mean. Or, those times when we are asked to talk about ourselves and the words stumble out leaving us with a feeling that we could have done that better, or indeed wished that we had a few quick sentences prepared to use at the drop of a hat. Conall can help put together ideas so that you can be better at getting across what you are working on and how you talk about it to different people and audiences. There will be consideration of how we can overcome art speak, and still get across strong concepts that are understandable by a wide audience.

Don't be lost for words and pick up top tips from Conall on the day. For more information and to register, follow the link https://visualartists.ie/resources-_/professional-development-_/#!event/register/2019/10/5/communicating-your-practice-with-conall-cary-limerick

This summer saw an epic ocean voyage from Limerick city to the city of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland with woodcraft created by a group of Learners at Nenagh Community Training Centre (CTC) crossing the Arctic Circle. Salmon’s Wake is the title of the Ilen Project’s 2019 Community and Schools Educational Programme. Designed by a Limerick man, Conor O’Brien, and built in 1926, the Ilen claims to be the last timber-built ocean-going ship in Ireland. After its construction at Baltimore in Cork the ship was sent to the Falkland Island where it remained in service for seventy years. Today the Ilen is not only a fully functioning sea-going vessel but also serves as the central learning tool in a schools programme where young people from educational settings in Limerick and Nenagh learned new skills in aspects of boat-building and voyage preparation. Under the supervision of the expert boat builders of the Ilen Project, and their woodwork instructor at our John’s Lane facility, since March of this year, the Learners of Nenagh CTC were assigned the task of making the oars, poles and paddles, as well as restoring the ‘cot’, a smaller boat that sits on the main vessel. ‘Our Journey’ through photography and media will be on display for Culture Night, Friday 20th September 6-8 pm where you can meet participating Learners, team members, Boat builders and some of the Ilen Crew.

www.whatsonintipp.ie is an online festival calendar to highlight and promote Festivals and Events across Tipperary which has been developed by Tipperary County Council. In addition to being a promotional tool for events taking place throughout Tipperary, this online festival calendar will also facilitate organisers in planning event dates by providing an accessible reference point for as many of the County’s Cultural, Community and Sporting events as possible, acting as a “clash” calendar for organisers when setting dates for festivals and events. The calendar is easy to use and organisers can register their events on the website. Cultural, Community and Sporting events are categorised under a range of headings and users may search by date or type of event. Categories include: Arts; Children’s; Family; Comedy; Exhibitions; Fairs; Shows; Markets; Festival; Film; Heritage; Historical; Lectures; Readings; Music; Theatre, Sports & Outdoors.
