Inside this issue:

As schools get back in ses-sion, Give Kids A Smile knows that our work is only beginning. This year the directors of GKAS have de-cided to post-pone our usual bi-annual clinic for October 2007. Instead, we will use this opportunity to launch the TINY SMILES CLINIC.

Give Kids A Smile has a unique opportunity to partner with the Healing the Children not for profit organization to provide the dental care, edu-cation and wellness opportu-nities for 0 to 5 year old un-derserved, at-risk children of the St. Louis region.

The inaugural launch of this new clinic will take place on November 3, 2007 at the Center for Advanced Dental Education on the campus of St. Louis University. The one-day TINY SMILES CLINIC is expected to serve

over 350 children and their families.

Through the efforts of the partnering organizations, our volunteers, our community and business supporters, we expect to provide a model for future clinics serving the needs of these tiny ones. In addition to the dental care services, which include dental exams and fluoride varnish, these tiny ones will receive the opportunity to have hearing tests by licensed audiologists, and some medical screenings. Of course, entertainment, fun and festivities are still a major part of any Give Kids A Smile event.

To volunteer for the TINY SMILES Clinic on Novem-ber 3, 2007 contact the GKAS office at 636-397-6453. You may also want to volunteer for our regular bi-annual clinic which will take place on

February 1 & 2 , 2008. More information regarding this and other upcoming events can be found on our website at www.gkas.org.

As the president of Give Kids A Smile, I wanted to give everyone an update of the good things that have happened so far in 2007. Feb-ruary’s grand scale event at St. Louis University Center for Ad-vanced Dental Education was spec-tacular as we’ve come to expect with our clinics. We saw a ton of patients and we were able to pro-vide a ton of dental treatment. For those with a more scientific view-point, that would be four thousand pounds of accomplishments. We’re still getting calls about the good things that happened to the kids who were seen at the clinic.

As if the February clinic were not enough, the golf tournament in June was added to the wonderful successes of Give Kids A Smile. For those of you on the golf com-mittee, those that contributed to the tournament with your dona-tions and support, and those that spent the day with us golfing at Bogey Hills Golf Club, thank you. The officers and board of directors of Give Kids A Smile consider it a privilege to call you friends and we are so thankful for your unwaver-ing generosity for the kids. Don’t

stop your tremendous work! But where do we go from here? How can we even hope to top what we’ve done so far? With the CDC’s report of increasing tooth decay in pre-school aged children, Give Kids A Smile has made a commitment to reducing those numbers through an entirely new program we are calling Tiny Smiles. This program will fo-cus on children 0-5 years old and their parents and caregivers. It will be an education initiative first and a clinic event secondarily. Through a knee-to-knee exam the children will be examined, given fluoride varnish applications, directed to facilities for additional dental care when needed, and the entire family will be educated in diet, oral hy-giene, dental development, and oral health issues. It is our goal to re-duce the tooth decay before the chil-dren reach a Give Kids A Smile an-nual extravaganza dental clinic. We all know that prevention is al-ways better than treatment. Addi-tions to the dental aspect of the Tiny Smiles clinic will be audiology exams, physicals, and dietetic coun-seling. Our clinics continue to grow in scope and services provided to the kids in need.

The Tiny Smiles clinic will be Sat-urday, November 3, 2007, and will be in place of our normal fall clinic. We will need everyone’s help. Tiny Smiles will be happen-ing at SLU CADE, it will be for one day only, and it will be our inaugural clinic event for Tiny Smiles. So, please volunteer and tell all your friends that you vol-unteered for the first Tiny Smiles clinic in the country. You’ll get tons of accolades (that’s 4000 pounds or more)! See you there.

Tiny Smiles

A New Direction

For Give Kids A Smile

April 30, 2007. The National Center for Health Statistics of the Center for Disease Control released a news alert with an ugly and alarming title; “Oral Health Improving for Most Americans, But Tooth Decay among Preschool Children on the Rise.” Later that day Associated Press released an article to the media from Mike Stobbe, an AP Medical Writer, “Tooth decay is on the rise for kids.” On April 30th, CNN re-ported, “Study: Cavities increasing in baby teeth.” The media and in turn the public has been made aware that young children below school age have a problem that is on the increase and all eyes are looking at us, the dental pro-fession, to do something to correct this looming issue.

Give Kids A Smile has been aware of this problem for quite some time and has been developing a way to help turn the tide of tooth decay in our youngest population. It’s called “Tiny Smiles” and Give Kids A Smile will be initiat-ing and promoting our new program both to the public through the media and directly to parents and guardians of little ones, as well as making den-tists and dental hygienists in every practice in our area aware of how to reach the littlest of patients. “Tiny

Smiles” from Give Kids A Smile is on the way!

“Tiny Smiles” of Give Kids A Smile has incorporated both the “Start Right” program and “Lift the Lip” program including a dynamic educa-tional component that is a famous signature of any Give Kids A Smile event. “Tiny Smiles” will provide knee-to-knee examinations, fluoride varnish applications, and most impor-tantly, a comprehensive education program for the parents and guardi-ans. The key to prevention is the child’s parent or guardian. Diet, hy-giene, and daily home care practices are solely dependent upon the parent or guardian. Dental health will be possible if the parent or guardian is motivated in that direction. This is truly a new concept of reaching the child at an age that was previously not treated in offices other than pedi-atric practices.

November 3, 2007, will be the kick-off event for Give Kids A Smile’s “Tiny Smiles” at St. Louis University Cen-ter for Advanced Dental Education. This clinic will be our Fall Give Kids A Smile clinic event this year. We are so excited about this new addition to the Give Kids A Smile organization. Those of you that have previously volunteered at a Give Kids A Smile event will recognize the balloons, T-shirts, circus atmosphere, and lunch on the balcony. Our new event will be

one day instead of the usual two day project. We will not be providing re-storative, endodontic or oral surgical care, but instead will be seeing many very young children in the clinic and will need many dental professionals to care for these children. We hope to have our parent and guardian educa-tion process as informative, uniform, consistent, and fun as a circus. It’s the Give Kids A Smile trademark that our volunteers and patients have come to expect and love.

This event will also have a very differ-ent continuing education component as well. Through our CE program we will be reviewing the process of knee-to-knee examinations, fluoride var-nish application process, parent edu-cation protocols, and providing some cutting edge preventive techniques that dental professionals will be able to take back to their offices and use right away on the very young patients that we often overlook in our prac-tices. As an aside; All Clinic Volun-teers Will Be Required to Participate in the CE Program and Become Certi-fied in Small Child Care.”

Please look for more on the “Tiny Smiles” clinic at SLU in future mail-ings from Give Kids A Smile.

We are again honored to receive additional grants from the Subur-ban Journals Old Newsboy Day, The Rabbi Robert P. Jacobs Jewish fund for Human Needs and The Fox Family Foundation. Their contin-ued support of the mission of Give Kids A Smile is a testament of their care and concern for the underserved chil-dren of the St. Louis region.

Mr. Sam Sumner, a GKAS Advisory Committee member, helped write and submit a grant application to his employer, Morgan Stanley. Give Kids A Smile is proud to an-nounce that our request was re-ceived favorably and a check was recently sent to GKAS.

SPECIAL

SUPPORTERS

Healing the Children has agreed to partner with GKAS to launch the TINY SMILES CLINIC. Their fi-

nancial and volunteer sup-port is a major factor in the development our this new clinic. Of course, we are extremely grateful for the on-going and continu-ous support of organiza-tions such as Delta Dental of Missouri, St. Louis Uni-

versity Center for Advanced Dental Education, St. Louis University De-partment of Nutrition and Dietetics, Patterson Dental, Goetze Dental, Henry Schien, Keller Dental Labs, Astra Tech Dental, Young Dental Mfg., Cissell-Mueller Companies, and many more. A very special thanks to all.

It is impossible to express our contin-ued gratitude for the financial sup-port of our grantors. The Daughters of Charity Healthcare Foundation of St. Louis has continued to be a piv-otal force in the development of the infrastructure and the growth of the Smile Factories for the Give Kids A Smile organi-zation.

Members and parents of Dr. Flavin’s soccer team honored him with a dona-tion to GKAS and Monsanto gave us a matching grant. I am sure that we have other volunteers who could honor Give Kids A Smile by way of matching grants through companies that employ them or other family members. Let us know about these opportunities.

The Potts Foundation provided Give Kids A Smile with a 2007 Grant for our dental clinic projects.

SAVE THE DATE—October 26, 2007. That’s when Give Kids A Smile will offer its first Professional Dental Seminar. The seminar will feature Jim & Naomi Rhode. Pro-fessionalism is the key to Jim and Naomi Rhode’s all-day seminar. “Building the Ultimate Practice” is an inspiring and informative semi-nar outlining key suc-cess factors for a dy-namic dental practice.

The program is packed with specifics, including all the ways to do things right—first time, every

time. It is a wonderful opportunity for a dental office staff to learn to-gether. Key topics include: How to keep patients coming back, How to keep the Word of Mouth working for

you, Five Achievable Benchmarks and the Seven Strategies that will build the value of your dental business.

Plan ahead and make your reservations now. The seminar will take place at the St. Louis Air-port Crowne Plaza Hotel on Friday, October 26, 2007 from 8:30 until 4:00 p.m. A boxed lunch is

included. Visit our website at www.gkas.org for more information and a copy of the registration bro-chure.

June 4, 2007 was a beautiful, clear, sunny summer day. Give Kids A Smile had a fantastic 2nd Annual Charity Golf tournament at Bogey Hills Country Club on that day. That first Monday of June is now fixed on the GKAS calendar as an annual GKAS Golfing “FORE” Kids golf tournament. We hope that the tradition will continue and the event will attract more and more golfers each year..

The golfers came out for our tour-nament in force—one hundred strong! Volunteers and committee members worked in a fun-filled day of golf, friends, lunches, raffles, golf poker, drinks, dinner, auction and awards. You couldn’t pack in any more fun!!

. . . And a Volunteer Speaks—

“Supporting the Summit” By Jeremy A. Bono

Four years ago I walked in the doors at Forest Park community college not knowing what to ex-pect from my first appearance at the 3rd Give Kids A Smile event. Greeting and walking around from chair to chair with my new little friends was more reward-ing than I ever imagined it to be. When it all came to an end, I started thinking about why I felt so good about myself and so thankful that the children who needed the most dental work in our community were able to be helped through clinical treat-ment and education. The most impressive part was that I was only one of over 490 volunteers that made the event such a suc-cess in serving 421 children.

Now approaching our 12th event I recognize the extreme importance of true volunteerism in its purest un-selfish form. Personally I don’t feel as if I am “giving up” my weekend or “sacrificing” my time, but more as if I am just one piece of the greater Give Kids A Smile Mission “...to bring caring volunteers and organi-zations together for the purpose of delivering quality services to chil-dren” with a commitment to serve the “...underserved and to strive to mentor organizations and future volunteers to help kids smile.” I am reminded as I continue to be an active participant in this mission that none of this would be possible without the cooperative effort of all the volunteers involved. We are missionaries combining strength and camaraderie in fellowship for the final goal of serving the chil-dren, parents, friends and

neighbors to promote the utmost dental health our community. It is for this reason why I continue to support this organization and am willing to do whatever it takes to find others to share this truly awesome experience.

So if you or someone you know is interested in helping make this next event and all the events in the future a tremendous success, you are welcome in joining us in creating dental excitement. Knowing full well that you will be changing lives . . .
