Tiny patchwork smock dress

This tutorial is for a dress for a 0-3 months old baby. Of course you can also

use this tutorial to make larger size dresses by adjusting the sizes evenly.

You could also make the dress longer by adding an extra row of patchwork.

Have fun!

Get your stuff together • Matching scraps of fabric for the patchwork

• A larger piece of fabric for the top of the dress. You’ll have enough

when you have a piece about 50x35 cm (20x14 inch) in total.

• Matching thread

• Elastic thread

Cut your fabric I use a big cutting mat, a cutting ruler and a roll cutter, but a ruler and

scissors will work just fine as well.

• Two pieces of 14x32 cm (5.5x12.5 inch) for the top

• Four pieces of 5x30 cm (2x12 inch) for the shoulder straps

• Seventeen squares of 10x10 cm (4x4 inch) in several colors for the

patchwork. You will make one row of eight squares and one row of nine squares.

Make a seam on the long sides of the body pieces

• Fold the fabric twice and pin down (about 1 cm or 1/3 inch)

• Sew the seam with matchin thread

• Press with iron and set aside

Make the shoulder straps

• Fold your strap pieces in half and press

• Fold the long sides to the middle and press

• Fold in half again and press. Now you have a strap that’s about 1,25 cm wide (1/2 inch)

• Sew along both sides of the straps in matching thread and finish off one end with a zig zag stitch.

• Set aside your four straps.

Making the smock body

• Take your elastic thread and wrap it around a bobbin while pulling

the thread. Fill the whole bobbin with the pulled elastic thread.

• Put your bobbin in the machine and leave the matching thread on the top of the machine.

• Now take your body pieces and sew along the top of the body about 2 cm from the top (about 6/8 inch from the top) right side up. The fabric will start to wrinkle due to the elastic thread.

• Sew about 9 more of these underneath the first one leaving a space of about 8mm (1/3 inch) in between.

• Eventually you’ll end up with two smocked pieces for the body of the dress of about 17-18 cm wide (6,5-7 inch wide).

• Seam along the sides of the body with right side together. Make sure no thread or elastic will stick out on the right side.

• Cut of all access thread and elastic.

• Attach the sholderstraps by sewing them in on the inside about 3 cm (1,2 inch) from the side.

Making the patchwork dress piece

• Sew one row of 8 squares and one row of 9 squares.

• Sew the ends of each row together. These are your two skirt pieces.

• Make sure your squares will form a good mix for your dress.

• Now along the top of the smallest skirt piece with a big streight stitch.

• Pull the threads on the end and beginning untill it’s about 18-20 cm

(about 8 inches) wide when you lay it flat.

• Stitch the patchwork piece to the body piece with right sides together.

Make sure the wrinkles are devided evenly.

• Sew the first patchwork piece to the body (make sure you’ve put your machine in the normal stitch again after using the big stitch!)

• Sew along the topside of the second (larger) patchwork piece with a big stitch and pull the threads on the beginning and the end until it’s

about 30-33 cm (12-13 inch) wide when you lay it flat.

• Pin the second piece to the first picee with right sides together.

• Stitch them together with a normal stitch (make sure you’ve adjusted your machine after using the big stitch!)

• Make a seam along the bottom of the dress of about 1 cm 1/3 inch

• Iron the dress.

• You’re ready!
