TO ALL PARISHES: The Diocese of Biloxi is committed to fostering a safe environment for our young people. As a result, we have entered into an agreement with Catholic Mutual Group for them to provide online safe environment training for anyone in our parishes, schools and other diocesan-related entities who minister to young people. Clergy, religious, diocesan employees, parish/school employees and volunteers who have contact with young people will need to access the website below to begin the certification process and for recertification, which is required every five years. This training is also available in Spanish. To access the training site, visit http://biloxi.cmgconnect.org
Reflection from World Youth Day— Shelby Martin
Our World Youth Day pilgrimage was one of the most life changing and eye
opening experiences. During our 10 day pilgrimage, we were able to explore many
cities, churches, shrines, and museums. The night we flew into Warsaw, we went
to St. Stanislaw Kostka Church were Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko served and
is now buried. Our first two full days were spent in Gniezno where we stayed with
host families and explored the historic city and beautiful churches. On the third day
we traveled south to Krakow. Along the way, we went to Father Adam Urbaniak's
home parish and the cemetery where his mother is buried. As we traveled through
Kalisz, we stopped at the Shrine of St. Joseph and prayed for families in front of
the miraculous image of the Holy Family. Later that day we made it to Czechstowa,
the spiritual capital of Poland, where we were able to venerate the beautiful image
of the Black Madonna. On Tuesday we traveled to Auschwitz and later to the
church where we were able to pray under the same image of the Blessed Mother
that young Karol Wojtyla, later John Paul II, consecrated himself to her by first
muttering the words, Totus Tuus. Wednesday we went to Krakow for Catechesis of
the Bishops and Mass with Cardinal O'Malley of Boston then to Wieliczka, a
historic salt mine that has a gorgeous Catholic Church carved into it. Thursday was
our first official World Youth Day event- the Papal Welcome in Błonia, a park in
Krakow. It was a huge celebration and it was amazing to witness people from all
across the world coming together to celebrate the Catholic faith. We also walked
through the campus that holds the JPII Center and the Shrine of Divine Mercy. On
Friday we went to a bazaar in Zakopane, the city we stayed in for the week, and to
the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. This shrine was built as a thank you to Our Lady
for saving Pope John Paul II's life after the assassination attempt in 1981.
Zakopane was the perfect city to build this church in because it was John Paul II's
favorite place to go skiing. On our way to Stations of the Cross that night, Pope
Francis passed right in front of us! We were able to see him from ten feet away, he
smiled at our group. That night we walked through Krakow and had the opportunity
to venerate the relics of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. On Saturday, we traveled to
Wadowice and were able to tour the home and parish church of John Paul II. One
of the most moving parts was being able to see and put my hand on the Baptismal
font that he was baptized in. Later that afternoon we walked to Campus
Misericoridia for the Vigil with Pope Francis. We had Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament and prayed the Chaplet of Divine Mercy in everyone's language. We
stayed the night in the field surrounded by 2.5 million brothers and sisters from
around the world. The next morning, we had Mass with Pope Francis. It was
incredibly awe inspiring to join together with millions of young people to participate
in the source and summit of our beautiful faith, the Eucharist.
World Youth Day has had an incredible impact on me. To encounter and
experience the universality of the Church made me finally realize we are all
connected, all one body of Christ, we are all one. John Paul II is my Confirmation
saint, so being able to go to his home country for the event he started was an
incredible experience. During WYD, the Holy Spirit has put a new passion for
mercy on my heart. It is so difficult to explain everything that happened during our
pilgrimage, but I am a renewed and changed disciple because of it.
Know that my sister Lindsey and I prayed for each of you and the intentions in our
notebook constantly during our pilgrimage. I especially pray that you each come to
know and love the divine mercy of our Lord. Thank you so much for supporting and
praying for us! We can't wait for more of you to join us in Panama in 2019 for the
next WYD!
"People may laugh at you because you believe in the gentle and unassuming
power of mercy. But do not be afraid." -Pope Francis, closing Mass at WYD
