Mission StatementSan Carlos School is a ministry of San Carlos Cathedral providing a quality Catholic education for students in grades TK-8.

We welcome:all families seeking a faith-filled learning community for their children.

We nurture:the whole child by integrating spiritual and moral development with high academic standards.

We serve:the local and global community by fostering a spirit of stewardship, safety, and peace.

Love, gratitude, and best wishes filled our campus and church on Friday, June 5th as representatives from San Carlos School and dear family members hosted an inspiring and spirit-fueled Mass and luncheon to celebrate the retirement of our beloved Business Manager, Tina Melo. Students, families, staff, and friends gathered to honor and thank Mrs. Melo for her amazing 26 years of service to San Carlos School.

Thanks to the spectacular musical talents of Middle School Teacher Tim Krislyn on guitar and vocals, current parent Charles DaSilva on percussion, alum parent Carolyn Hiserman on guitar, and 7th grade vocalist Jenna Beesley,

student voices were in full force through-out the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Music teacher Amber Johnson, accompanied by Mr. Krislyn, sang a glorious and moving rendition of “How Great Thou Art” as a reflection after Communion.

Rev. Jerry Maher and Rev. Ron Shirley co-celebrated the Mass, and Fr. Jerry inspired all with his warm and thoughtful sermon, citing Mrs. Melo’s contributions to San Carlos as perfect examples of the Gospel in action.

Current students, past and present staff, and family members participated in many aspects of the Mass with Mrs. Melo’s grandchildren as altar servers, petition readers, and ribbon bearers.

Student representatives from every grade showered Tina with accolades and gifts, including blooming begonia plants, seed packets, potting soil, and fertilizer because her “loving words and actions have helped so many bloom and grow as individuals and children of God.”

Many family and staff members gathered in the Parish Hall after Mass to continue the celebration with a lovely reception and luncheon. Our Principal, Teresa Bennett, acted as emcee and gave a heartfelt tribute to Mrs. Melo, including an overview of all of her accomplishments as Business Manager of San Carlos School.

Fall 2019

Under Tina’s direction, the School successfully completed many major projects, including: ● Installing a fence and security gate on campus● Creating an infrastructure to allow for effective use of technology● Replacing all windows in the Hall● Renovation of the kitchen in the School Hall● Replacing all old lockers● Replacing the entire tile roof ● Replacing old desks with updated classroom furniture● Replacing all old windows in the School with double pane● Gradually installing new blinds in every classroom● Installing new furnaces in several classrooms● Purchasing lunch tables● Building the lunch structure ● Opening Branches Resale Shop

● And her real Crown Jewel...which is almost complete...the renovation of the field.

Kimberly Cheng, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Monterey congratulated Mrs. Melo for her 26 years of service to the Diocese, and Karen McKenzie, Assistant Principal of San Carlos School, gave her an “A+” and a lovely gift on behalf of all the teachers and staff.

The luncheon culminated in the presentation of a one-of-a-kind painted tile, thanks to the artistic talents of Nancy Galloway and Michael Scanlon. The tile came from the School’s original tile roof while the stand was made from a redwood taken down during the renovation of the Cathedral.

Mrs. Melo’s daughter and Second Grade Teacher, Stephanie DaSilva, gave a moving tribute to her mom on behalf of the family and announced the establishment of the Tina Melo Commitment Scholarship which will be awarded annually over the next ten years to one highly deserving 8th grade student.

HAPPY RETIREMENT TINA!

Dear San Carlos School Family,

With summer break behind us and a new school year beginning, we are filled with renewed energy, spirit, and gratitude for our many blessings here at San Carlos School. We look back on the 2018-19 school year with pride and a true sense of accomplishment and we are forever grateful to our many supporters.

We are very excited about changes to our newsletter, including its new name of “Spirit and Scholarship” which is a more

fitting reflection of what makes San Carlos School so special. We are a community bursting with faith-centered spirit as well as school spirit, and a community of budding scholars who thrive because we set high expectations in a very nurturing, safe, and family-friendly environment.

“Spirit and Scholarship” includes sections that will recur every issue, including “Class Corner”, “Teachers’ Turn”, and “Alumni Applause” that highlight exceptional activities and accomplishments of our students, teachers, and alumni. I invite you to send us information that you would like to add to these sections at [email protected] at any time throughout the year and we will do our best to accommodate.

In this issue, we say farewell to our dear colleague and friend, Mrs. Melo who has retired after 26 year of service to San Carlos School and we welcome Mrs. Cindy Rybkowski, our wonderful new Business

Manager. We also thank all of our Annual Fund donors, grantors, dinner auction participants, and key benefactors whose support is critical to the successful operation of our School. Our Annual Income and Expense Report is testament to our consistent and responsible financial management.

As we journey through this year together, I encourage all of you to keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for updates on school news and events. Very soon we will be posting the Strategic Long Range Plan which was finalized by the Principal’s Advisory Board last spring. This plan contains goals and objectives for the next five years in all areas of school operations. Please keep us in your prayers as we move forward and work toward the accomplishment of these goals to insure a growth-filled future for San Carlos School.

Many blessings to all, Teresa V. Bennett Principal

Principal’s Message

MANY THANKS TO OUR GENEROUS

GRANTORS

The Pebble Beach Foundation awarded SCS another terrific grant to help fund the continuation of our Accelerated Reader Program. This program provides teachers with a more detailed profile of each student’s reading level and allows them to set individualized reading goals and encourage reading selections from a wide variety of books. Students needing reading intervention can be quickly identified and assisted with customized support. Most importantly, students really enjoy the Accelerated Reader Program because it offers a wider selection of reading choices including fiction, biography, and nonfiction.Once again, the Monterey Peninsula Foundation kindly donated proceeds from this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am to SCS. Many thanks to all the SCS volunteers who donated their time and talent to this very worthy cause!

CLASS CORNER Lower School Kindergarten Kindness Placemats To Meals On WheelsKindergarteners created reusable Kindness Placemats for senior citizens who are clients of Meals On Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula. Students drew sweet pictures on construction paper and added happy messages to the seniors.

Approximately 300 laminated Kindness Placemats were delivered to Meals on Wheels for volunteers to distribute with meals. A truly awesome act of kindness for seniors by some of our youngest students!

3rd Grade Intro. to Banking Courtesy of Wells FargoThird graders walked to Wells Fargo Bank in downtown Monterey on May 30th to learn about banking procedures and services. They saw a demonstration of a machine that counts money and distinguishes between authentic and counterfeit bills. A trip downstairs brought them into the safety deposit box vault and the old bank teller area where they had great fun taking turns at the teller window. All students were given (play) money which they had to count and enter onto a bank deposit slip. They each had the opportunity to sit with a teller and make a “deposit”. It was an age-appropriate introduction to interest, loans, and financial responsibility. All of the students enjoyed their visit!

6th Grade Greek Polis CompetitionSixth graders enjoyed the thrill of Academic, Artistic, Athletic, and Community Building competition during the month of May. All tests, graphic design projects, fashion shows, and more were made more exciting with teamwork! Students from each Polis (Greek city-state) supported one another to be their absolute best. This years’ champion Polis was Athens, followed by Argos, and the Ladies of Delphi.

6th Grade Paper Crane Donations to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Infusion Center The SVMH Infusion Center was so thankful for and touched by our 6th-grade class’ donation of 1556 paper cranes to the 200 children and adults that are treated for cancer monthly at this brand new facility. Thirty-five students created the cranes which all included encouraging

notes. These cranes were inspired by the Japanese story of Sadako and her one thousand paper cranes and have come to represent hope and healing for patients recovering at hospitals.

7th Grader is Junior Queen of the Portugese Feast of the Holy SpiritThe 75th anniversary of the Portugese Feast of the Holy Spirit, “Festa do Devino Espirito Santo” was celebrated on July 14th with a parade, a Mass at San Carlos Cathedral, a huge gathering of thanksgiving for all blessings at the Portugese Hall, and our very own 7th grade Junior Queen, Olivia DaSilva.

8th Grade Writing Winners: Steinbeck Young Authors Eight 8th graders were named semi-finalists in “The Day of Writing” at the National Steinbeck Center this year by demonstrating a high level of excellence through their culminating essay. Students included Jillian Marshall, Noah Pope, Matilde Romano, Rylee Jue, Riley Neikirk, Luka Didoszak, Katie Falo, and Gabe Gallagher.

Two students, Anna Gorman and Lily Young, achieved the highest marks from their teachers and were able to move forward in the competition. These students took part in “The Day of Writing” Writing Workshop with distinguished tutors and teachers and their work was published in the Gabilan Journal.

Anna Gorman ultimately won First Place in the County for her essay.

8th Grade Science Fair Winners Three 8th graders earned 2018 - 19 Monterey County Science Fair awards, including: Luka Didoszak for “Volumetric Change Based On the Density of a Fluid”, First Place: Chemistry, ASM International Foundation Award, Broadcom Masters Award, Invited to State Science Fair;

Noah Pope for “Ocean Acidification On the Central Coast”, Third Place: Environmental Science; and Matilde Romano for “How Our Ear Position Determines Sound Perception”, Third Place: Mammalian Biology, US Navy/US Marine Corps Award.

Ecology Club Responds To the Call Pope Francis has inspired the students of San Carlos School through his letter entitled “Laudato Si” which was written to “every person living on this planet.” In his letter, Pope Francis asked citizens of the world to acknowledge, discuss, and take personal responsibility in meeting

environmental challenges. The SCS Ecology Club made up of 5 - 8th graders, took his message to heart and led a school-wide campaign to reduce waste - specifically food waste. With the guidance of the San Carlos Parish Organization “Care for Creation,” the Ecology Club researched and presented classroom and school presentations to raise awareness for the need to cut down food waste. As a result of their efforts, the SCS students reduced their weekly food waste by 35%! Our students are responding to the call and becoming true stewards of creation by respecting and protecting the environment for future generations.

Congratulations to Mrs. Karen McKenzie for receiving the 2019 Outstanding Teacher Award from The Rotary Club of Monterey in recognition for her exceptional teaching abilities and her limitless dedication to the well-being of each and every student she serves. Mrs. McKenzie joined San Carlos School as the fifth grade teacher in August of 2009 and transitioned to Middle School as a Science Teacher and Academic Intervention Coordinator in 2016.

She is known to be a compassionate and conscientious teacher who is committed to ensuring the success of every student. Not only is she proven to be organized and creative; she continually strives to find ways to improve the science curriculum and other school programs.

Mrs. McKenzie is also a valued leader among the staff, serving as the Department Chair for the intermediate grades and a member of the Leadership Team for the WCEA/WASC accreditation process.

She continually researches strategies to help students succeed and is supportive of

other staff members in their efforts to address learning differences. She goes out of her way

to participate in school-wide activities and works as a mentor teacher to support those who are new to

teaching. Her work ethic, genuine concern for her students, and unyielding desire to support student success made her an exceptional recipient of this award. AWESOME EFFORT MRS. MCKENZIE! WE’RE SO PROUD OF YOU!
