Tournament FormatThe tournament will be played with Warhammer Fantasy Battles, 7th edition with 2250 point armies over 6 rounds.

All players are to bring a copy of the core rules, any Army Books and publication they are using. You must be able to present the rules for any model in your army.

Models used in an army must accurately represent those detailed in your army list. Proxies are not allowed.

If the TO’s take part in this event they will remove themselves from any prize consideration and submit army lists prior to other players list being received.

The first round of the Tourney will be determined randomly, although challenges are encouraged so long as they are not mismatches. All subsequent rounds will be drawn using the Swiss system.

Table top terrain will be set up before the tournament and may not be re-arranged by competitors before or during a game. If it is unclear how some terrain is to be treated with respect to the rules work this out with your opponent.

Army ListsAll armies must use an Army book that has been published and released in New Zealand at least 1 month before the commencement of the tournament.

Dogs of War from 2002 annual and Indy GT Chaos Dwarves may be used. Dogs of War units may only be used in a Dogs of War Army. Regiments of Renown my not be used.

Rhinox Riders may be used in an Ogre Kingdoms army.

Special or named characters cannot be used.

Army lists must be submitted to the TO by the date stated in the key dates schedule above. Please use the MS word template given at the end of this document (to allow cut and paste and compatibility with earlier versions).

Playing the TournamentScoringPlayers will accumulate tournament points over the course of the tournament. They will be comprised of the elements listed below. A final score will be calculated, meaning that every point a player earns in Battle Points, Sportsmanship, and Painting will directly contribute to their tournament score.

Composition (1 point)The objective of the army composition system at this tournament is to help make every game played at the tournament as rewarding as possible for the players involved. To do this the composition system will:

1. Encourage a diverse range of armies by evening up the playing field so that any army book can compete on even terms with any other army book.

2. Encourage people to bring armies that are interesting to play with and against by provide a handicap so that players may play with an army without all of the best units and most efficient selections and still compete with the more optimized armies.

The army composition for this tournament should allow you to bring the models you want to bring, but not necessarily all, or any, of the most powerful combinations. If the army submitted by a player is in the opinion of the TO way off the mark in terms of power, the player concerned will be asked to resubmit if it is too powerful or obnoxious.

Army groups and handicapsThe Warhammer armies will be divided into five groups. The armies in each group will be assigned an amount of battle points as a handicap that they start each battle with.

Handicap modifierAll of the armies in the tournament will be circulated to each player. Each player will be asked to rate a selection of the armies. Similar armies will be marked by the same group of players. Players will not rate their own army.

Players who return the composition marking on time will get 1 tournament point. See key dates above for when the composition marking is due.

If a player cannot participate with the comp marking please inform the TO before the lists are sent to players for marking.

Each individual army will be rated from “very hard” to “soft”. The rating is based on guidelines given below. The rating will be collated and averaged to give a discrete rating of very hard, hard, on target, or soft. This rating will then in turn modify the handicap for that player’s army list.

Army rating

Handicap modifier Judging guidelines

Veto N/A

TO will ask a player to submit a new army list if the player has misjudged the tournament and has submitted an army that is over the top, one dimensional or otherwise obnoxious.

The best test for this is even though this is a challenging army is this is an enjoyable army to play against. If the answer is no then a veto is probable.

Armies in the top groups are more likely to be asked to resubmit than armies in the lower groups.

Very hard -250

A very hard army would have two or three of the really optimal items or combinations that other players find really tough about your army. There will be very little in the army that is less than optimized

Hard -100

A hard army would contain one or two of the units or combinations that people find really tough in your army book. These may be mitigated in some way by taking less obvious or less efficient army selections

On target 0

The army has minimal (not necessarily none) of the things that people hate about the army but still plays to the armies’ strengths and should still be competitive. Don’t feel you have to avoid all of the good choices, minimize them and avoid the best automatic choices.

Soft +100

Soft armies have none of the best combinations or automatic unit choices and are taking some of the less frequently seen units. Armies that are soft are making significant concessions when compared with a standard army.

Sportsmanship (30/161)After every game each player will be asked to complete a sports score sheet rating their opponent’s behaviour based on the following YES/NO criteria:

1. Regardless of the outcome of the battle - did your opponent behave themselves and do nothing which detracted from your enjoyment of the game?

YES/NO

2. Were all rules queries resolved amicably and without too much argument?

YES/NO

3. In your opinion did your opponent avoid doing anything "dodgy" during the game?

YES/NO

4. In your opinion, did your opponent play the game in the right spirit? Did they maintain a sensible approach and demeanour when things were not going their way?

YES/NO

5. Would you be happy enough to play your opponent again? Maybe not today but at another tournament perhaps?

YES/NO

For each “NO” vote you must be prepared to briefly explain to the TO why. The TO will query any unusual results and will randomly audit others to ensure that this process is fair and is not being used simply to punish an opponent without real cause. The TO may ignore an inappropriate “NO” vote where he considers it to have been given maliciously or without objective foundation. So from the 6 games a player could possibly receive 30 sports points (perfect score), which will contribute to their tournament score. Each “YES” vote gives you 1 point.

After the last game you will be asked to nominate your best sport for the weekend from the 6 people you have played. That player will receive an additional point towards calculation of the Best Sport prize for each vote they receive. Their overall tournament score will not be increased.

Painting (10/161)The TO's will appoint one or more painting judges. The judge(s) will look at each army during the tournament and mark the painting on the following criteria:

1. All models painted in at least 3 colours 1½ points

2. All models are based and flocked 1½ points

3. Flock uses 2 different materials (e.g. Static grass and rocks) OR made an above average effort on their bases

½ point

4. All models are washed/inked/highlighted 1½ points

5 Army has a consistent feel (similar “theme,” units have distinct variations but appear to be part of a whole)

1½ points

6. Some models have been modified (minor conversions, green stuff)

½ point

7. Army includes major conversions (scratch built model, extensive modification)

½ point

8. Character models are distinctive ½ point

9. All models correctly represent their troop type 1½ points

10. Army has painted/flocked movement trays ½ point

The accumulated points from the listed criteria will contribute a maximum of 10 points to your tournament points.

Beauty PageantAt a point during the tournament players will be asked to display the armies for the beauty pageant. Only players who have actually painted their army will be eligible for this contest.

All players will be eligible to vote for their first, second and third choice army.

Each first choice vote is worth four points,

Each second place vote is worth 2 points.

Each third place vote is worth 1 point.

Best SportAt the conclusion of the last game all players are eligible to vote for the person who they considerer the best sportsman they played at the tournament. This is to reward exceptionally sporting behavior, good fun or whatever else makes up the X factor.
