DO'S¢ Do change your password often ¢ Do use hard to guess passwords¢ Do create a pass phrase acronym to remember passwords for example: “let’s go to the beach today instead of work” becomes "Lg2tbtioW" NOTE: the use of upper case and number¢ Do remove confidential paperwork from desktop if you leave your desk¢ Do lock your computer if you step away from your desk, computer lab or computer courtyard¢ Do protect your user name and password¢ Do back-up your data on USB drives or CDs regularly¢ If you own a laptop, tablet etc., then Do so with prudence be aware that laptop theft is a leading crime¢ Do report spam and phishing emails to: [email protected]¢ Do question people if they ask for any personal details over the phone or in person (social engineering)

DON'TS¢ Don't share your user name and password with anyone¢ Don't keep passwords where they can be seen by anyone¢ Don't make your password a name or a date (real words or numbers are easily hacked)¢ Don't share access to your computer with others¢ Don't leave computer unattended, log off if you are done¢ Don't open email or email attachments from unknown sources¢ Don't become a victim of "phishing" ¢ Don't download anything from sites you do not trust¢ Don't install software on your computer if you are an employee without checking with your CNS or District IT department¢ Don't ignore security policy. It’s part of your job. Don’t rely on a plea of ignorance¢ Don't share confidential data with those without a need to know

Computer security is a collaborative effort which requires teamwork and participation by all.

It is not the job of a single individual or department.
