be the new BDO regional office in Cape Town.

Having a firm with the quality, reputation and energy of Cameron & Prentice join BDO will ensure that we are well-positioned to service our existing clients in the Cape, as well as our ever-increasing client base with operations across the country. The added strength of Cameron & Prentice means greater capacity for us and our clients.

This exciting development marks a new era for our firm. Since 1971 C&P have proudly served the Cape community. They are now looking forward to expanding their range of services as well as capitalising on the opportunities that being part of the world’s 5th largest accounting network brings.

With this merger, we are firmly on the way to ensuring that BDO has the critical mass and is a leader in our chosen market segments in the accounting profession in South Africa.

John Spencer CEO

BDO merges with Moore Stephens (Jhb) and Cameron & Prentice (CT)

They say that all good things come in threes and if this is to be believed, Louis Oosthuizen’s win at St

Andrews started a very good run for us. The other two good things were, of course, the completion of a superb World Cup and our recent merger with Moore Stephens (MS) in Johannesburg and Cameron & Prentice (C&P) in Cape Town.

The partners of MS have been known to us for decades and we have over the years had numerous talks with them about putting our practices together. I had a call from one of their retired partners, Craston Wilson, who left 15 years ago and all he said was “at last!” He knows as well as we do what a good fit the merger is. Not only because of the complementary skills in the various business lines but also both firms have the same culture and subscribe to the same set of values.

We are proud to announce that the two firms will join forces to create a stronger Johannesburg-based entity with effect from 1 September 2010. The new combined firm will continue to operate under the BDO brand name and be associated with the BDO International network.

The amalgamation will boost the number of partners and directors operating in Johannesburg to over 35 and the number of total staff to 400, with 10 new partners joining BDO from Moore Stephens.

In addition to traditional Audit & Accounting services, the combined firm will create a formidable non-audit service offering - specifically in the Tax and Corporate Finance arena. Probably the largest and most specialised outside the big firms.

In fact ,the expanded Corporate Finance team’s combined offering will rival that offered by any of its competitors in the South African market. Moore Stephens Corporate Finance is one of South Africa’s top-ranked Corporate Finance firms, having been ranked fourth overall by transaction volume in the 2010 DealMakers survey of South African Corporate Finance activity, and number one amongst the accounting networks.

This will put BDO in a unique position where we will now offer a strong Corporate Finance and Risk Advisory service to complement our well established Audit, Accounting, Tax, Wealth Advisory and Fiduciary services.

We have always been a proponent of greater choice in the marketplace, and the added strength of Moore Stephens in Johannesburg means that there is greater capacity available to both us and our clients.

With this merger we are signalling the start of our strategic ambition to ensure that BDO becomes a leader in all our chosen markets in South Africa.

We need expertise and critical mass and are following a course to achieve this in the medium term.

As a member firm of BDO International, one of the key global accounting networks in the world, we are committed to building a sustainable firm that will benefit our people, our community and our country for decades to come.

With effect from 1 September 2010, Cameron & Prentice, a 6 partner practice based in Cape Town will merge with BDO, and will

Durban office updateComrades Marathon 2010

With over 70 staff members this year to man the BDO watering table for over 20 000 runners, a very busy but fun-filled day was had by all. Many comments were passed by spectators on how professional everyone looked in their red shirts and how impressive our new BDO branding is. A big thank you to all those staff who volunteered to make this event the success it was – without you it would not have been possible!

BDO Inter-School Quiz 2010

Maritzburg College will go down in history as the first school to be named the ‘BDO Inter-School Quiz Champs’! They came first with an excellent score of 163 followed closely by Crawford North Coast who achieved 155.

The incredible success of this campaign was echoed by comments such as: Christine A. McGladdery (Westville Boys High) “Thank you for inviting us to participate. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. You provided a super space for learners who often don’t fit into the standard rugby-hockey-type moulds. BDO really showed that it can be cool to be clever!”

CSI Initiative - Shalligram Home for the Aged

The BDO Durban Corporate Social Responsibility Committee dedicated a Friday afternoon of their own time to hold a special tea in honor of Mothers/ Fathers Day. At the home, the elderly not only enjoyed delicious eats but also spent quality time chatting to the members of the committee. They also handed over a food hamper generously donated by staff and a Makro voucher to the value of R5000.

This event meant so much to these residents who instead of enjoying their golden years, face poverty, isolation and disrespect.

Paint it Forward – A Values Initiative

BDO Durban staff were split up into teams and told to let their ‘creative juices flow’. ‘Paint it Forward’ is derived from the concept of ‘Pay it Forward’. This philosophy believes that if one repays an act of kindness by performing a selfless deed for another, society as a whole will benefit for the good. Each group was given a blank canvas on which they painted a visual picture of the values they believe BDO represents. A fabulous day was had by all and dare I say a few budding artists were discovered!

Pretoria office updateSTAFF UPDATE

Pretoria staff were treated to a presentation by Shareen Richter, the laughter coach (pictured right).

Laughter and happiness de-stress sessions are an incredible tool to use with groups and create an instant feeling of happiness and joy.

Participants often experience a quantum leap in their effectiveness, performance and happiness. “We left feeling energised with a sense of internal power. When you feel good in the inside you are able to operate more effectively, with passion and purpose!” said Esme Kluckow. Staff excel in this state and are always far more productive both in their private lives and in their careers.

Shareen put smiles on faces one never knew could smile . . .

CSI INITIATIVE - DONATION TO INNER CITY PRE-SCHOOL FORUM

After loads of fun and excitement the SWC 2010 (sadly) came to an end.

The idea with the office decor competition was to make use of material which could be put to good use after the event.

These lovely pre-schoolers form part of the Inner City Forum Pre-Schools.

BDO Pretoria donated blankets, scarves, beanies, flags etc to the Forum.

The amount of dedication and commitment to keep this project on track is astounding. Some of these ‘schools’ are shipping containers, where there are no trees, no grass and often no water ... but motivated kids wanting to learn arrive each day!

They also donated soccer paraphernalia to a school in Nellmapius!

SOUP & SHERRY EVENING

Guest speaker, Prof Johan Oberholster, Head of Accounting at University of Pretoria, talked about the effects of outcomes-based teaching.

The event was attended by CA professionals of the northern region, lecturers of UP and Unisa, and teachers from high schools in and around Pretoria.

Can you say ‘YMCA’?

Johannesburg office update CLIENT EVENTS

THE BOYS IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

As part of BDO’s build-up to the World Cup, the Johannesburg office invited their top clients and spouses to the re-worked production of the hit musical ‘The Beautiful Game’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton. This powerful and passionate musical is also a joyous celebration of the freedom that love can bring. Audiences rose to their feet, cheering, screaming and tearful as the game of soccer was recreated on stage with some of the most original exciting choreography ever seen in musical theatre. The evening was a huge success, everyone enjoyed the show, and Anne-Marie’s insistence that everyone wear flashing soccer glasses added to the festivities.

WOMEN’S DAY WITH THE SA BALLET THEATRE

What better way to celebrate Women’s Day than a morning with the South African Ballet Theatre.

BDO hosted about 55 ladies at the rehearsals of Veronica Paeper’s acclaimed three act ballet ‘Carmen’.

BDO’s guests got up close and personal with the cast of the production and marvelled at the amazing talent South Africa has to offer.

“It’s incredible to see how hard the dancers work to achieve perfection for their audience,” commented one of the ladies, “I’ll appreciate the show a lot more now that I have seen what goes on behind the scenes”.

We hope all the ladies who attended the event enjoyed it but we must warn against trying those moves at home ladies … BDO takes no responsibility for sprained ankles from failed pirouettes!

STAFF EVENTS

STAFF UPDATE

The Johannesburg staff update on 11 May had a distinctive soccer flavour. After staff had savoured a tasty breakfast they were treated to Mxolisi from The African Dream and his choir singing traditional songs such as Shosholoza as they entered the room. Mxolisi then very patiently taught staff to sing the National Anthem. Afterwards staff moved into the gardens for champagne and a lesson in Diski dance moves.

WALK THE TALK

On Sunday 25 July, 78 staff and their families from BDO and Moore Stephens took part in the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk. Everyone congregated afterwards for some well-deserved refreshments and rather loud entertainment.

BDO LADIES GOLF DAY 11 AUGUST AT RANDPARK GOLF COURSE

This annual BDO event is a highlight on the calendars of the lady golfers. Those who attended this year were not disappointed. After a quick sip of Old Brown Sherry to get the blood flowing on this particularly cold August morning, the ladies were ready to get swinging.

Gill Van Der Meulen showed she was just as good as the gents with her HOLE IN ONE on the 2nd hole.

New BDO Partner Candice Whitefield didn’t mind too much that her team got the Longest Day award as she, along with all the players, got to enjoy a well deserved back and shoulder massage from Hands-On Treatment.

Sue Cogswell’s 4-ball won the top trophy, but the real winners of the day were the children of Finetown orphanage who received the trailer full of non-perishable goods, donated by the lady golfers.

The red & blue flashers were the hit of the party!

SPORTING TEAMS

BDO FOOTBALL

The ‘famous’ BDO Houghton’s (ex Moore Stephens) Football Team takes to the field in Edenvale every Wednesday evening for 40 minutes of gruelling indoor football. Armed with bullet-proof vests and pepper spray for security reasons, we meet beforehand for an ‘energy drink’ and to discuss ‘match tactics’. Our captain fantastic, John Argyros, gives us an inspirational talk, usually involving him never talking to us again if we lose the match, while Steve, an ex-employee and our star defender, promises not to get sent-off this game. Our tattoo-covered opponents usually seem to underestimate us, either due to the fact that last year we would consider a 20-0 loss, a solid moral victory or because 5 minutes into the game we’re still cracking jokes and acting like immature 7-year-olds. However, we do tend to surprise, with American ‘Christiano Ronaldo’ Carneiro leading our strike force we usually jump to a speedy 4 goal lead! However, our opponents quickly realise that while their shots at our lanky goalkeeper, Hayden von Maltitz’s midriff remain futile, any shots aimed between his legs are almost always successful, and by halftime the game is level. We get another team-talk from John, reaffirming his vow of silence in the event of a loss, and retake the field.

The second half usually results in the following: Hayden makes numerous, seemly unstoppable saves, but concedes as many goals through his legs. Ayub, another ex-employee, takes a swing at the ball only to find John’s hand, resulting in a shattering of both leg and hand alike. Andrew ‘Fabregas’ Theron scores a cracker from outside the box with his left-and-only-foot. And Steve gets sent off for a ‘tame tackle’, in his own words, on a player without the ball and then arguing with the ref about it.

Regardless of the result, more ‘energy-drinks’ are had after the game, it is after all vital to replenish those electrolytes. With thanks to Andrew Theron

MANAGERS MEET AND GREET - BDO AND MOORE STEPHENS

Managers from Moore Stephens and BDO met up at Rodizio’s Brazilian Restaurant in Fourways.

They feasted on the meat buffet (16 different types). Maria from BDO and 10K (that is what they called him – we still do not know his real name) from Moore Stephens were taken for a spin on the dance floor by the professional dancers.

After a slightly stiff start to the evening (nothing a few shooters couldn’t remedy) there was lots of laughter and dancing. A great time was had by all.

MARKETING TRACK DOWN THE GAUTRAIN

In the wee hours of Tuesday 8 June, the Marketing team were huddled in the Sandton ticket station, waiting for it to open at 5am. They were the first in a long line of passengers awaiting a thrilling ride on the Gautrain.

BOW TIE AND BROOCH DAY AT MOORE STEPHENS

A fun idea that became a tradition at MS is the BROOCHES for ladies and BOW TIES for men on Friday the 13th. It is even more colourful when the guys forget and have to queue up to have their normal ties transformed into a bow tie (which is how we discovered that Mohamed Fikry is a Champion transformer!). Hopefully BDO will adopt this idea as it helps to dispel superstitions and fears about Friday the 13th.

TEN PIN BOWLING

BDO and Moore Stephens had a great time in the lanes. It was the first time most of them had met each other, and Moores showed their superiority with a landslide victory. Wesley from MS was the champ of the day with a whopping 190!sfer Pricing

We wish you guys luck for the rest of the season!

TAX BRINGS SOME CHRISTMAS IN JULY JOY TO 170 PEOPLE

BDO Jo’burg’s Tax Department joined MES (Metro Evangelical Services) in Hillbrow to celebrate its Christmas in July event for less fortunate, elderly people. Only 140 people were expected, but an enthusiastic group of 170 people arrived including the homeless, mentally handicapped and frail.

BDO staff members cleaned, cooked, set out the tables and decorated the hall.

A fabulous meal was served.. Some of these elderly people only receive a meal twice a week via the MES feeding programme. MES and Outreach feed up to 200 homeless people at various locations in Johannesburg.

BDO also donated blankets, along with big hugs. The smiles and tears of joy were testimony to the appreciation felt by the recipients.

MANDELA DAY

In support of Mandela day the Johannesburg office did a collection of non-perishable food items to be donated to Finetown Orphanage. Thank you to all staff who gave so generously.

JOHANNESBURG CSI INITIATIVES

KEEPING THE CHILL AWAY FROM THE NEEDY

The winter chills were particularly gripping this winter season and the young ladies of the Strathyre Girls Home were very grateful when they received blankets from BDO. The Salvation Army established the Strathyre home in 1921 for women and girls in need of care. Today it is home to 60 girls aged between three and eighteen years old. The children in its care are committed through the Children’s Court due to varying degrees of abuse, neglect, poverty and/or abandonment.

The girls wrapped themselves in the warm blankets as they posed shyly for photos.

ST MARTIN’S GOLF DAY

BDO had the privilege of sponsoring the 9th hole at the St Martin’s school golf day (John Spencer’s former school, and Brian Berry, Chairman of the Trust). The hole was decorated with BDO signage from tee to green and was by far the most impressive and colourful hole of the day.

Monica Reyneke and Megan Veldman from Moore Stephens manned the hole and ensured the golfers were well nourished. As soon as the golf cart was seen on the horizon, out came the shooters and snacks. Each 4-ball were given a gift to squabble over depending on who was nearest the pin.

Some of the team members claimed the prize before they even teed-off and inevitably landed in the water generating much laughter and teasing from the other team mates.

It seems we are not only adept at staging soccer tournaments. In July, BDO South Africa hosted a delegation of Chinese businessmen. The group was addressed by a variety of key players in South Africa’s business landscape, as well as key BDO partners and directors.

Although it was a typically freezing winter’s morning in Johannesburg, BDO’s welcome to the 23-strong delegation of Chinese businessmen was typically warm. The delegation comprised CEOs, financial directors and economists from China’s mining and real estate sectors. In addition to facilitating a round table discussion, BDO arranged a number of guest speakers to speak on different aspects of doing business in South Africa. With thanks to Jason Ma

Rest in Peace StompieThe BDO family and clients were deeply saddened by the untimely passing of one of our true sons, Clive ‘Stompie’ Schoombie on 19 June this year. Clive had for the previous 9 months been battling physically after his initial heart attack in August last year, but despite this he never complained and enjoyed many special moments with his family, fellow workers and friends. His immediate family Ginny, Paul, Mark and Shaun, in particular were blessed to have had this extra time during which they shared precious time at Millstream, Ramsgate and the Kruger National Park. He was appointed a partner in BDO in 1988 upon the merger with the firm Dreyer and Dreyer. Clive generally preferred smaller clients where he could take a very personal interest in their affairs, often forging long term relationships with many of them. His professional skills were however not limited to the smaller clients, as can best be illustrated by being the lead partner on Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon (WBHO), one of BDO’s largest and most prestigious clients. He was a wonderful mentor to many and was often the partner to which troubled staff members would pour their hearts out.A man sometimes of few words, ‘Stompie’ as he was affectionately known, could have fun and party with the best of them. A keen fisherman, golfer and sportsman in general, Stompie always had an anecdote or ‘chirp’ about something and was always ready for a little sideline bet, be it in his 4-ball, on a cricket score or a rugby score. In his vivid imagination he was also World Table Tennis Champion and Backgammon Champion, which in his wry humorous way invited many a challenge.Clive was loved by everyone and the corridors of BDO and fairways of the Wanderers will never be the same. Stompie was truly one of the legends of BDO. May he rest in peace.

I pray that I may live to fish until my dying dayAnd when it comes to my last cast,

I then most humbly pray when in the Lord’s great landing net

and peacefully asleep that in his mercy I be judged

big enough to keep.
