1 EXT. S.F. STREET - CLOSE ON CLEMENS

CLEMENSI have long been interested inthe notion of time travel. Infact, I wrote a book about it...It chronicled the tale of a manfrom our era who fouled the sixthcentury by introducing newfangledgadgets and weapons... all in thename of Progress.(puffs cigar)The idea of time travelers isn'tso far fetched as it seems...in fact, I have learned that, evennow, people from the future areright here in San Francisco...and I have no doubt that they areintent on fouling our world...just like my Yankee did in KingArthur's time.(leans into camera)Well. Let me serve notice: assoon as I get the necessaryevidence, I intend to exposethem... and make it absolutelyclear that they are not welcomehere.

2 ANGLE - CLEMENS AND YOUNG REPORTER

revealing that Clemens has been giving an on-the-streetinterview to a young reporter who is taking notes ona pad. The kid smiles politely.

STAR TREK: "Time's... , Pt. 2" - REV. 7/08/92 - TEASER 2.

2 CONTINUED:

YOUNG REPORTERYes, sir. And will this be asequel to "Connecticut Yankee,"Mister Twain?

CLEMENS(glaring)The name's Clemens, son. SamClemens, with an "e."

YOUNG REPOTER(jotting it down)With an "e"... got it.

Suddenly Twain stops, spotting something across thestreet.

CLEMENS'Scuse me.

Twain hurries away, falling in behind DATA, followinghim down the street -- still seeking "necessary evidence."Camera DROPS OFF on a TALL, ARISTOCRATIC COUPLE movingthe opposite direction... she carries a satchel, hecarries a cane with a strange carved snake-head. Theytake no notice of Data. Camera follows them as theymove through the people on the street in a silent, ominous search.

(NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes.)

4 INT. MORGUE - DARKENED ROOM

Only the vague shapes of drape-covered bodies arevisible... a hand-held light (lantern?) casts a light.Beverly is using a tricorder on the bodies.

RIKERThe coroner said this roomcontained all the choleravictims...

BEVERLYIt doesn't make sense that so manypeople are dying of cholera --it just isn't that virulent.

Suddenly she stops at one body.

BEVERLYWil... this is strange...

RIKERWhat is it?

BEVERLYThe cerebral cortex... thecerebellum... the brain stem...the entire nervous system -- hasbeen drained of electrochemicalenergy.(moving to another body)Here's another one... same neuraldepletion...

STAR TREK: "Time's... , Pt. 2" - REV. 7/15/92 - ACT ONE 4.

4 CONTINUED:

BEVERLYThese people didn't die of cholera-- they died because their neuralenergy was drained somehow.

RIKERDrained... and taken to DevidiaTwo... for those aliens toingest.

Beverly gives him a look... this is an appallingscenario. Riker looks around the gloomy room, therows of shrouded bodies.

STAR TREK: "Time's... , Pt. 2" - REV. 7/09/92 - ACT ONE 5.

4 CONTINUED: (2)

RIKERIf you were a time-traveller witha taste for human neural energy...how would you get your supply?

She eyes him, understanding what he's getting at.

BEVERLYI'd travel back to times whenthere were plagues andepidemics... when I could murder-- and use disease as a cover.

5 EXT. VICTORIAN BOARDING HOUSE - DAY - STOCK

Establishing.

6 INT. BOARDING HOUSE - RENTED ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Riker and Beverly are there, reporting to Picard, Troi, and Geordi. All are dressed in 19th century garb.

BEVERLYOver half the victims who'd beendrained of neural energy came froma place called Sisters of HopeInfirmary.

RIKERIt's a charity hospital near thewaterfront.

TROIIf the aliens have been killingpeople there, someone might havenoticed something unusual...

PICARDIf they're moving among humans, they must have taken human form. The question is, how do we knowwho we're looking for... ?

STAR TREK: "Time's... , Pt. 2" - REV. 7/10/92 - ACT ONE 6.

6 CONTINUED:

RIKERThe tricorder picked up evidenceof triolic activity in most ofthe bodies we looked at. If thealiens are leaving that signaturebehind, they'll be detectable.

GEORDI(thinks for a moment)We might even be able to setup some kind of alien alarmsystem.

They move to collect their things (purses, jackets, etc.); Riker goes to Geordi.

RIKERAny luck contacting Data?

GEORDINone. The tricorder isbroadcasting random emissions...but the range is pretty limited.Almost anything could interfere...

Riker nods, and they start toward the door, whensuddenly there's a loud, insistent knocking on thedoor. The group exchanges dismayed glances.

STAR TREK: "Time's Arrow, Pt. 2" - 7/02/92 - ACT ONE 7.

6 CONTINUED: (2)

GEORDIShe's back.

MRS. CARMICHAEL'S VOICEMister Picard!

She pronounces it PICK-erd. The others regard theCaptain, who rises. Geordi removes his VISOR, puts ondark glasses.

PICARD(resigned)Coming, Mrs. Carmichael...

He opens the door to find MRS. CARMICHAEL standingthere. She is a short, squat, formidable-lookingwoman, Irish and insistent. She speaks with a thickbrogue.

MRS. CARMICHAELMister Picard... I'd be remindin'you that it's one o'clock.

PICARDYes... ?

MRS. CARMICHAELOne o'clock of a Thursday.

Picard smiles aimiably at her, not sure what she'sgetting at.

MRS. CARMICHAELI'm sure I made it clear to youthat the rent is always due, payable in full, by one o'clockon Wednesdays.

PICARDAh. The... rent.

He turns toward the group; they are at a loss. Thisis, after all, such a foreign concept to them. Picardturns back.

STAR TREK: "Time's... , Pt. 2" - REV. 7/09/92 - ACT ONE 8.

6 CONTINUED: (3)

PICARDMrs. Carmichael, my troupe is evennow in rehearsals for a newproduction.

MRS. CARMICHAELOh? I haven't heard of any newproduction. What play is it?

PICARDIt's -- "A Midsummer Night'sDream."

She starts to speak but he cuts her off.

PICARDWe've performed in London...Paris... Milan... all to soldout houses. I assure you, we'llbe able to pay the rent... witha bonus.

MRS. CARMICHAEL(shaking her head)No, no, no... I've heard yousilver-tongued devils before...

She advances on Picard, eyes blazing withdetermination.

STAR TREK: "Time's Arrow, Pt. 2" - 7/02/92 - ACT ONE 8A.

6 CONTINUED: (4)

MRS. CARMICHAELI'll have the rent in full...tomorrow... by one o'clock -- oryou'll be performing on thestreet.

She whirls and marches to the door, slamming it. Theothers share reactions. They've bought a little time-- but how will they come up with the rent?

7 INT. DATA'S HOTEL ROOM - SAME DAY (OPTICAL)

The door opens admitting Clemens (without a lit cigar)and JACK THE BELLBOY.

JACKI wouldn't do this for justanybody, Mister Clemens. And Ihope you won't spread it aroundthat I let you in...

CLEMENSOf course not, Jack. And I assureyou -- Mister Data would be mostupset if you didn't.(MORE)

STAR TREK: "Time's Arrow, Pt. 2" - 7/02/92 - ACT ONE 9.

7 CONTINUED:

CLEMENS (Cont'd)If I don't find that Letter ofIntent he left for me... our majorinvestor is going to pull out andtake his business elsewhere.

JACK(knowing)It has to do with Mister Data'sengine, doesn't it?

CLEMENSEngine...

Jack gestures to the contraption which Data hasconstructed, now working. Clemens, intrigued, walkstoward it.

CLEMENSYes... yes... this is exactly whatit's all about...

He circles around the device; Jack launches intoanother subject.

JACKMister Clemens... I'm gonna doyou another favor today...

CLEMENS(still looking at device)Mmmmmm...

JACKYou're always looking for goodstories, right?(no response)Well, I've got a humdinger.

CLEMENSUh-huh...

JACKThe story of -- my life. Now,I know you might think I'myoung... but I've covered a lotof ground, and if I do say so,it'd make for some prettyfascinating reading.(beat)So. What do you think?

STAR TREK: "Time's Arrow, Pt. 2" - 7/02/92 - ACT ONE 9A.

7 CONTINUED: (2)

CLEMENS(looking up)About what?

JACKAbout writing my life story. Youand me -- literary partners.

Clemens takes his arm, moves him toward the door, feigning interest in order to get him out of there.

CLEMENSYou know, son, there's a maximI've always lived by: no one'smore qualified to write your storythan you are.

STAR TREK: "Time's Arrow, Pt. 2" - 7/02/92 - ACT ONE 10.

7 CONTINUED: (3)

JACKMe? Be a writer? You think Icould?

CLEMENSLong as you write what you know...you got any passions, son? Anydreams?

JACKI'd like to do some travelling...maybe go to sea... and Alaska.I've always had a notion to seeAlaska.

Clemens is moving him toward the door, feigninginterest in order to get him out of there.

CLEMENSThat's a great idea. If I wereyour age, that's exactly what I'ddo... Alaska -- the Klondike...the Aurora Borealis... that's it,follow your dreams. And writeabout them.

He opens the door, gesturing the young man out.

JACKThank you! Thank you, MisterClemens. That's just what I'mgoing to do!

CLEMENS(trying to get him out)You do that, son --

JACKYou'll be seeing my name in print.(gesturing)London... the name's London.

CLEMENSI'm sure I will. Good-bye now.

And he finally gets the kid out. Clemens returnsimmediately to the device, now begins to examine itin earnest. Finally he leans toward it and removesthe transceiver assembly. The machine stopsfunctioning. He slips it in his pocket -- when hehears the sound of muffled voices in the hall. Heheads for the armoire.

STAR TREK: "Time's Arrow, Pt. 2" - 7/02/92 - ACT ONE 11-12.

7 CONTINUED: (4)

He reaches it as a key is heard in the lock, and issafely behind it when the door opens, admitting Dataand GUINAN.

GUINAN... so when I finally got to theHead Surveyor... I found thelocation of your cavern. Butyou won't be able to get to it.

DATAWhy is that?

GUINANThe only entrance is a mineshaft... right in the middle ofthe Presidio... the Army Fort.

DATAPerhaps you could arrange for usto get in.

She stares at him.

GUINANWhat?

DATAWith permission to dig for themine shaft.

GUINANData... so far I've been able todo everything you asked me to.But do you really expect me toget you into a high-securitymilitary installation?

He moves toward the mechanism he has created.

DATA(mildly)I have full confidence in yourpersuasive abilities.

GUINANWell... this is more interestingthan giving tea dances.

Data realizes the mechanism isn't working.

DATAThat is strange...

GUINANWhat?

STAR TREK: "Time's... , Pt. 2" - REV. 7/06/92 - ACT ONE 13.

7 CONTINUED: (5)

DATAI left this device activated...but the transceiver assembly hasbeen removed... without it I willbe unable to track the timeshifts.

GUINAN(immediately)Clemens.

DATASamuel Clemens?

GUINANHe's been driving me crazy. Hewatches the house, follows me downthe street asking questions --I'd bet you anything he got inhere and took your -- whateveryou said.

DATAIf you are correct, he must betold that the device has beenmodified in such a way thatprolonged contact with humantissue would be highly toxic.

There is a muffled "thump" from the closet. Data andGuinan exchange glances. Data moves swiftly to thecloset door and flings it open. Clemens stands there,at once sheepish and defiant, as Data and Guinan stareat him.

8 INT. DATA'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS

The transceiver assembly lies on the floor. Datastoops and picks it up. Clemens tries to regain hisusual savoir faire.

CLEMENSMadame Guinan... Mister Data...good day.

GUINANMister Clemens... shame on you.

CLEMENSShame, madame? I think not. Ifind no shame in my efforts touncover your plot.

GUINANI keep telling you, there is noplot --

CLEMENSYes... you do keep telling methat.(a beat, as he regards her)Mister Data, did you know thatMadame Guinan here is from arenowned Boston family... a closerelative of Judge Truman Williams?(to Guinan)I believe that's what you said...

GUINANYes.

CLEMENSThen... I wonder... why the Judgesays he's never heard of you? That's what his telegram to meindicated...

GUINAN(unfazed)There's been a blood feud betweentwo branches of the family. Hedoesn't acknowledge me.

STAR TREK: "Time's Arrow, Pt. 2" - 7/02/92 - ACT TWO 15.

8 CONTINUED:

CLEMENSAh. That must wound you deeply.

He circles the room, eyeing Data and Guinan up anddown.

CLEMENSWhat an interesting pair youare... an Ashanti princess...and a Swiss. Where in Switzerlandare you from, Mister Data?

DATAI am French, not Swiss.

CLEMENSOf course, that's right... nowI remember. A Frenchman witha talent for poker, from what Ihear.(paces again)You know, I was talking with afriend of mine, Ches Whitley...he said to say hello... wonderswhen you're coming back.

DATAI do not believe I know MisterWhitley.

CLEMENSNo? He works at the CountyAssayer's Office... said you'vebeen in there several times...claiming to be a geologicalengineer. Wanting informationabout mining operations duringthe 1850's...(beat)Remember him now?

DATAI do not know the gentleman byname. I have spoken to severalpeople in that office.

CLEMENSYes... I know. And in the Hallof Records... and the GeologicalSociety... and a little-knownmineral shop in Chinatown. Youdo get around, don't you?

STAR TREK: "Time's... , Pt. 2" - REV. 7/06/92 - ACT TWO 16-17.

8 CONTINUED: (2)

DATAAs apparently you do, MisterClemens.

CLEMENS(chuckling)I must admit -- you've got memystified.

He moves toward Data's machine.

CLEMENSThis contraption, for instance.Very unusual. It looks quite --futuristic. Tell me -- mightit have something to do with"time shifts"?

DATAIn a sense. The time shift isa new gearing system that I haveinvented... for a horselesscarriage.

Clemens glares at both of them, fed up with cat andmouse.

CLEMENSDo not insult me.(moving to Data)You've come to this century andbrought your infernal technologywith you... for God only knowswhat purpose... but I have nodoubt that it will be the peopleof this century who will sufferfor it.

GUINANMister Clemens, I think we've hadquite enough of this. MisterData's business is his own, andI'd thank you to leave.

STAR TREK: "Time's... , Pt. 2" - REV. 7/10/92 - ACT TWO 18.

8 CONTINUED: (3)

CLEMENSPardon me, Madame, but it ismy business... it is the businessof all humanity, I believe, tostop both of you from whateverit is you are doing here. Andthat is what I intend to do.

And he's out the door, leaving Data and Guinan relievedthat he's gone, but mindful that he could be a lot oftrouble before this is over.

9 EXT. INFIRMARY STREET - NEXT DAY

Riker (still as a policeman) strolls the street infront of the infirmary, cordially doffing his hat atvarious passersby.

10 INT. INFIRMARY - CONTINUOUS

Beverly, dressed as a nurse, wearing wire-rimmedglasses, is following DOCTOR APOLLINAIRE as he makesrounds. He seems to be a kindly doctor, but underneathlie the typical assumptions of 19th century sexism andracism. In the bg, Troi and Geordi (with dark glasses),are passing out little parcels to patients, chattingwith them as they do. Geordi is carrying the tray ofparcels.

Doctor Apollinaire lifts the wrist of one moribundman, feels for a pulse.

DOCTOR APOLLINAIREHe won't last the day.

BEVERLYAren't we going to treat him?

DOCTOR APOLLINAIREI wish we could. But at thispoint there's nothing to be done.Unless you know of some miracletreatment.

Beverly moves toward a medicine tray, picks up avial.

BEVERLYWhy don't we try an alkalinesaline solution... to counteractdehydration?

Apollinaire gives her a disdainful look.

DOCTOR APOLLINAIRENurse, if that were helpful, don't you think I would haveordered it?

Beverly has to bite her tongue.

STAR TREK: "Time's Arrow, Pt. 2" - 7/02/92 - ACT TWO 20.

10 CONTINUED: (2)

DOCTOR APOLLINAIRENow, you finish the charts andleave the practice of medicineto me.

BEVERLYYes, Doctor.

He moves to one end of the ward; Beverly moves towardTroi and Geordi, who are talking with a MALE PATIENT.Beverly slips her tricorder out of a pocket, and, asshe studies a chart, surreptitiously scans the area.

10A ON GEORDI AND TROI

TROI... did your friend have anyvisitors before he died?

MALE PATIENT(weakly)No... had no family... only peopleto come were doctor and nurse.

Troi nods, pat his arm comfortingly and starts to moveon.

MALE PATIENTVery bad doctor.

She turns back.

MALE PATIENTOnly spent time with one man.I ask for water... he ignore me.Others cry in pain... doctor doesnot care.(shakes his head)Very bad.

The nurse carries a satchel; thedoctor carries a cane... carved with a snake's head...as they pass Riker, he tips his hat to them. They movetoward the entrance of the infirmary.

12 INT. INFIRMARY - A FEW MINUTES LATER

Picard is fiddling with one of the gas lamps on thewall. Glancing around to make sure no one is watching,he inserts a small (TECH DEVICE) inside the lamp, thenbegins to replace the fixture. Doctor Apollinaireapproaches.

DOCTOR APOLLINAIREJust what is it you're doing withthose lamps?

PICARDReplacing the wick screws. Cityordinance... makes it safer incase of an earthquake.

DOCTOR APOLLINAIREThere hasn't been an earthquakehere in thirty years.

He finishes the lamp, picks up a tool box.

PICARDThat's it for this ward. Haveto be moving on.

He goes toward the door as Apollinaire looks after him, shaking his head scornfully.

DOCTOR APOLLINAIREEarthquakes...(to Beverly)Nurse, if you can handle thingshere, I have a meeting with theBoard of Patrons.

BEVERLYI'm sure I'll manage.

He EXITS. Beverly takes out her tricorder andcontinues scanning. She moves toward Troi and Geordi, who has now put on his VISOR and is looking around theroom.

GEORDI(pointing)There... by that bed. I can seean afterimage of triolic waves. They were here recently... withinthe last twenty-four hours.

BEVERLY(noting the bed)That's the bed where someone diedlast night...

TROI(pointing to the male patient)This man was complaining abouta strange doctor and nurse whovisited that patient.(to Geordi)They might still be in thehospital.

Beverly nods and Troi and Geordi EXIT. Beverlycontinues scanning... when suddenly one of the patientsgoes into labored breathing. She is at his side in amoment... checks pulse and pupils.

TROIThere was nothing like that,Officer...

RIKEROkay, folks, I suggest you allclear out and let the patientshave a little peace... sorry,Doctor.

POLICEMANWhere'd you get that? That's agentleman's cane.

He takes it from Geordi, inspects it with a knowing eye-- this is valuable.

POLICEMANNever saw a cane like this before.(tucks it under his arm)I'll have to confiscate it.Evidence.

Riker and Picard exchange glances. Riker steps towardthe policeman.

RIKERI want you to know... I have onlythe greatest respect for the law.

RIKERBut they were so small... andthey only lasted a second...

DATAThe aliens seem to have theability to concentrate thedistortion -- and direct it towarda specific time and destination.

BEVERLYMaybe they have something... a-- mechanism, that focuses it.

GEORDIAny device like that would producesignificant levels of triolicwaves...(recalling)... like the ones in the cavernwhere Data's head was found.

DATAI have located that cavern --

30A INT. DATA'S HOTEL ROOM

Guinan is there, pacing. She hears a key in the lockand whirls toward the door. It opens and Data ENTERS.

GUINANThere you are! I have good news-- we can get into the Presidio--

She stops as Picard, close on Data's heels, ENTERSalso.

DATAIt is all right.

Picard smiles at the sight of this nineteenth centuryGuinan in her finery. But of course she doesn't knowhim, and addresses Data.

GUINANGeneral Mallory is usually astickler for the rules... but Ihappen to know that his wifethinks she's a singer. So I toldhim she simply must perform atmy next gathering... and the rulesjust... disappeared.

Geordi and Riker are in one tunnel of the cavern, usingtheir tricorders.

RIKERThe triolic levels are as highas they were on Devidia Two...(lowers tricorder)... but no indication of anycontrol mechanism.

GEORDII'm not so sure.

Geordi is peering at the cavern walls through hisVISOR.

GEORDIMy VISOR is picking up crystallinefractures. These cavern wallshave undergone some kind ofselective molecular polarization.

He moves along the wall, still peering intently.

GEORDIIn fact, if I'm right... thiswhole cavern has been configuredto focus the space-timedistortion... just like a lens.

GEORDICaptain, we think we're on tosomething. The cavern itselfseems to be acting as a focusingmechanism... and I'm betting thesame is true of their habitatback on Devidia Two.

PICARDIf we can get back there... anddestroy that site... can we putan end to their timetraveling... ?

RIKERWe have the ophidian...

GEORDIBut I don't know if it will work. The energy our phasers generatemay not be entirely compatiblewith the ophidian.

Picard hesitates for only an instant.

GUINANBut... I have to wait... almostfive hundred years...(beat)And when we meet... I won't beable to tell you about this, willI?

PICARDNo. Because for me, it won't havehappened yet.

RIKERDamn it, Guinan, don't play gameswith me... I need answers.

GUINANIf I tell you what happened inthat cavern, it would affect anydecision you're about to make.I can't do that. I won't do that.

RIKERNot telling me might affect mydecision, too... did you thinkof that?

She does not respond. Riker leans in to her, frustrated.

RIKERWe're talking about Jean-LucPicard. I'm not going to sitaround and hope it all worksout... I've got to do something...

TROIIf you must have one, I'm surewe could replicate it for you.

CLEMENS(pained)You think one of those --imitations -- could take the placeof a hand-wrapped Havana?

TROI(mildly)I wouldn't know...

CLEMENSThat's the problem I see here...all this technology... it onlyserves to take away life's simplepleasures. You don't even leta man open a door for a lady.
