INFORMATION, ADVICE & GUIDANCEThe Admissions Team are here to help. We can talk to you in confi dence about careers, support and which course is right for you. We can also give advice about fees and check whether you are eligible for free or discounted study.

FINANCIAL SUPPORTStudents aged 19 and over can also apply for help with the cost of childcare, travel, kit, uniform, equipment and other expenses associated with the cost of coming to College.

Students aged over 19 studying a Level 3 or above course, or students studying an advanced course such as a Foundati on Degree, can apply for a Student Loan or various grants. Students may also be able to make payment by instalments.

Student Loans, Professional and Career Development Loans and the Advanced Learner Loan can help you pay for work-related learning to boost your job prospects or help you retrain for a new career.Please contact the College if you would like to talk about funding for your course.

FEE PAYMENTAll course fees are payable at the ti me of enrolment. If the annual course fee is over £150 you may be able to pay by instalments (subject to agreement at enrolment) by direct debit. The fi rst instalment must be paid by cash or card on the day you enrol on to your course. This will usually be on the fi rst day of your course.

If your course is being paid for by your employer, please obtain a purchase order number from your employer prior to enrolment. For all payments being paid by a third party, you will be asked to complete a Sponsor Form at enrolment.

All students remain liable for the full fees if you do not att end, withdraw or in the event of non-payment of invoice fromyour sponsor.

Are you aged 19 or over and thinking about further study?Are you worried about how to pay for your course?You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan that will cover your course fees.You can apply for all or part of the total fee (minimum £300).

The loans are available for most learners aged 19 and over who wish to study eligible courses at Level 3 and above. Eligible courses are indicated throughout this course guide in the course informati on secti on.

You can apply for a loan online, through the Student Loans Company once you have been off ered a place on your chosen course. The Admissions Team will provide you with the informati on that you will need to complete your applicati on. Your household income will not be taken into account and there is no credit check. You won’t need to pay anything back unti l you are earning over £21,000 per year.

Please note: If you are 19-23yrs and studying your fi rst full eligible course at Level 3, you may sti ll be enti tled to full remission. The Admissions Team will be able toadvise further.

THE DECKThe Deck at Highbury campus is a great place to meet your friends, relax, chat or study at one of the many computers available.You can play table tennis, table football or pool. Here you’ll also fi nd the NUS desk, with lots of informati on about the many great deals and acti viti es on off er. The Deck is situated on the fi rst fl oor above the Galley restaurant.

LIBRARY SERVICEOur Library Service off ers a variety of resources and equipment, including computers, online materials, books, magazines, newspapers, CD-ROMs and DVDs.

There are also group study areas, quiet areas, and wireless technology if you want to use your own laptop. We have a cool SOLE (Self Organised Learning Environment) centre - the fi rst in the world to be developed for vocati onal learning. Students with learning diffi culti es and disabiliti es are able to access supporti ve technology.

In additi on, e-books and resources are available through the Virtual Library, which can be accessed from any College computer or from home via the Internet.

The library also provides access to Canvas, our virtual learning environment, providing anyti me/anyplace learning.

SPORT & FITNESSThe Sports Centre at Highbury Campus has a wide range offaciliti es, including a sports hall, gym and fi tness classes. Sports on off er include badminton, mini-tennis and fi ve-a-side football, as well as Zumba, basketball and marti al arts.

Discounted membership is on off er to new students during the fi rst four weeks of term. Monthly and pay-as-you-go membership opti ons are available.

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?An apprenti ceship is a real job with training which allows you to earn while you learn, plus gain a nati onally recognised qualifi cati on.

Apprenti ceships take between one and fi ve years to complete and are available in 1,500 occupati ons across 170 industries, varying from constructi on through to IT and the creati ve and digital sectors.

ACCESS TOHIGHER EDUCATIONHIGHER EDUCATIONOur Access courses are specifi cally designed for students aged 19+ whoare preparing for higher educati on.Students from Highbury’s one-year Access to Higher Educati on courses have progressed to universiti es both locally and throughout the country. They include Oxford and Cambridge, Brighton, Edinburgh, London SOAS, Manchester, Sussex, Warwick, Winchester and York as well as the nearby Universiti es of Southampton, Chichester and Portsmouth.

The Access to Higher Educati on Diploma is a Level 3 qualifi cati on and off ers a range of pathways that could lead to a degree of your choosing, such as Business-related degrees, Engineering, Pharmacy, Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Nutriti on, Social Work, Health related degrees and Humaniti es degrees.

WHAT IS A HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE (HNC)?An HNC is equivalent to the fi rst year of a degree. You can study part-ti me whilst you work either in the evenings or on day-release from your employer. Alternati vely, you may be able to take an HNC as part of a Higher Apprenti ceship.

WHAT IS A HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND)?Once you have achieved an HNC you could progress on to an HND, which is equivalent to the second year of a degree. On completi on of an HND you could go on to do another year at university to get a full honours degree.

Our Flexible Learning Centre is conveniently located in Arundel Street, in the heart of Portsmouth. It off ers a range of accredited courses for anyone interested in furthering their learning. You can enrol at any ti me and study at your own pace in the Centre’s relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Learning is mostly through easy-to-follow workbooks that takeyou through an enti re course in simple steps. Helpful and supporti ve tutors with plenty of experience are on hand to provide assistance whenever you need it.
