If they do, they keep them. If not, they put them back. Play until there are no jigsaw pieces left. Who collected most pairs? Go round the group and check their jigsaw pairs. You may wish to make notes as a record. S-t-r-e-t-c-h: If children cope well, ask them to choose a time and say what happens at that time of day.

Time jigsaws Activity 1

Focus of activity: Telling the time to the hour on analogue clocks.

Working together: conceptual understanding

Use a geared analogue teaching clock to show 8 o’clock. When the long hand, the minute hand

on a clock points upwards, it's an o’clock time, and the little hand, the hour hand shows us it’s 8

o’clock. This is 8 o’clock in the morning.

Together count on in one-hour steps as you move the clock hands. 9 o’clock, 10 o’clock, 11

o’clock, 12 o’clock. This is lunchtime. Move the hands round an hour. Now it’s 1 o’clock. Carry on

counting in steps of one hour until you reach 8 o’clock. This is 8 o’clock at night.

Draw a track from 8 o’clock in the morning to 8 o’clock at night, with each hour/space labelled

(written times). In advance use a clock stamp to print each time on separate cards, distribute

round the group.

Work along the time track, discussing what happens at each time, e.g. getting up, school starts,

playtime, lunchtime, home time, TV time, teatime, bedtime, etc. As you do so, ask children to

come to stick their times in the correct space.

Move your finger slowly along the time track, talking about what happens at each stage and

asking children to act it out, e.g. getting out of bed, stretching and yawning, getting dressed,

eating breakfast, brushing teeth, walking to school, sitting on the carpet for register, running

round outside, eating lunch, going to sleep.

Up for a challenge?

What time is lunch time? Show me on the clock. What time do we start school? Show me on the

clock. What time do we finish school? Show me on the clock.

Now it’s the children’s turn:

Give each pair a set of jigsaw pieces. They spread them out on the table, times facing up.

They take it in turns to choose a pair which they think go together. If they do, they keep

them. If not, they put them back. Play until there are no jigsaw pieces left. Who collected

most pairs?

Go round the group and check their jigsaw pairs. You may wish to make notes as a record.

S-t-r-e-t-c-h:

If children cope well, ask them to choose a time and say what happens at that time of day.

Things to remember Remember that when the long hand on a clock points upwards, it's an o’clock time, and the little

hand tells us what hour it is. Give the geared clock to a child. Show me 2 o’clock. The rest of the

group show thumbs up if the right time is shown. Repeat with a different time for each child.

You may want to add something that has emerged from the activity. This may refer to

misconceptions or mistakes made.

Resources

Geared analogue clock

Clock stamp and cards

Time jigsaw pieces, copied onto card and cut out (see childinstructions)

Outcomes 1. Children can tell the time to the hour on analogue clocks.2. Children begin to know o’clock times for key times of the

day.
