Sub:- Recommendation/Nomination for Ashoka Chakra Series of Gallantry Awards to be announced on Republic Day, 2022.

This department is in receipt of a letter No. 18/08/2021-Public dated 16/09/2021, alongwith enclosures, issued by the Dy. Secretary (Public) to the Govt. of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, which is forwarded by Dy. Secretary, Home (Gen), "A"-Wing, 5th Level, Delhi Sachivalaya, I.P. Estate, New Delhi-02 for inviting appropriate nominations/ recommendations for gallantry awards to be announced on Republic Day, 2022 (copy enclosed).

The awards are given in three categories i.e.

1. Ashok Chakra : Awarded for most conspicuous bravery or some act of daring or pre-eminent valour of self sacrifice.

2. Kirti Chakra

Awarded for conspicuous gallantry. 3. Shaurya Chakra : Awarded for gallantry.

All the Districts DDE(s) and Head of all Branches of this Department are requested to send their recommendation/nominations, if any, may kindly be furnished alongwith bio-data, complete details of the gallantry act etc., in the prescribed pro forma (Part-A 85 Part-B) along with the prescribed certificate, and details in Annexure 1 along with photograph. This should be properly corroborated by documents like FIR or other report from the police authority, so as to reach directly in the office of Dy. Secretary, Home (Gen), "A"-Wing, 5th Level, Delhi Sachivalaya, I.P. Estate, New Delhi-02 latest by 04/10/2021.

individual acts of merit and gallantry. The idea behind instituting a system of awards and decorations is that the awards and decorations, which are tangible tokens of recognition of the service rendered by an individual, could act as a powerful incentive for greater efforts by that person and also serve as an example for others to emulate.

2. The Ashoka Chakra series of gallantry awards are amongst the highest gallantry awards of the country. These awards are given ip three c2...tsg2Les viz. Ashoka Chakra (awarded for most conspicuous bravery or

Aome act of daring or pre-eminent valour of self sacrifice), Kirti Chakra .A(awarded for conspicuous gallantry) and Shaurya Chakra (awarded for tr gallantry). The awards are announced by the Government of India on

occasions of Republic Day and Independence Day every year. Besides the Defence personnel, civilian citizens of either sex in all walks of life, and members of Police Forces, Central Armed Police Forces and Railway Protection Force are also eligible for these awards.

3. It is the practice to invite nominations/recommendations for the gallantry awards twice every year from all State/UT Governments and Ministries/Departments of the Government of India. It has, however, been our experience that very few recommendations are received. This is despite the fact that various incidents of gallant acts performed by individuals are regularly reported in the print and electronic media. Such acts of bravery/gallantry go unrecognized in the absence of appropriate recommendation in their favour by the State Governments or other organizations to which the individual involved in the gallantry act belongs. This matter therefore deserves its due attention.

4. You are, therefore, requested to send appropriate nominations/ recommendations for gallantry awards to be announced on Republic Day-2022. The recommendations are to be sent in the enclosed proforma latest by 15th October, 2021.

5. While finalizing the recommendations, the following points may be kept in view: -

(i) The person recommended for the award must be a bonafide and suitable candidate for the award.

(ii) Complete details of the gallantry act, including sequence-wise details of the steps taken by the person connected with the act, nature of risk involved, etc should be clearly mentioned in the recommendation. This should be properly corroborated by documents like FIR or other report from police authority.

(iii) A certificate about the verification of the character 86 antecedents of the person recommended is forwarded in the enclosed format along with the recommendation, in the absence of which the recommendation will not be considered.

(iv) The gallant act for considering recommendations for Ashoka Chakra series of awards should have been performed not more than two calendar years ago from the date of the occasion i.e. Republic Day in this case. Therefore, recommendations for gallant acts performed in the calendar years 2020 and 2021 may only be forwarded to this Ministry for consideration.

(v) The last date for receipt of recommendations i.e. 15.10.2021 may be strictly adhered to.

(vi) Photograph and brief Life Sketch of the recommended person should also be sent.
