Time and Motion Study
BY VIVEK SHELKE
What is Time and Motion Study• Time Study measures how long it
takes an average worker to complete a task at a normal pace
• Motion Study is designed to determine to best way to complete a repetitive job
Time and Motion Study
• Time and motion study is a technique for recording the times of performing a certain specific job which is carried out under specified conditions.
• For analyzing the data so as to obtain the time necessary for an operator to carry it out at a defined rate of performance.
Why you need to do a Motion and Time Study• Are costs too high• Why is there a problem?• How can it be solved?• Which alternative is better?• Choose the best alternative
Where it can be implemented?
• Manufacturing• Office• Banks• Department Stores• Supply Chain Management
Benefits of Time and Motion Studies
• Determination of productivity improvement goals• Immediate elimination of non-value added activities• Provide recommendations for the most efficient
way to perform the tasks• Develop a valid assessment of the current
operations• Provide recommendations to improve utilization
and productivity• Machine and Process Studies• For balancing Workload
Time and Motion Study Equipment
• A stop-watch Time study• A study board• Time study forms• Audio and Video Tape recorder
• A stop-watch Time study• A study board• Time study forms• Audio and Video Tape recorder
Time and Motion Study: Problems1. Observers are not always
competent2. Those conducting the
study are not always proficient in the job being observed
3. The actions observed are not always reflective of the group as a whole Workers may not cooperate with a time and motion study

Procedure of Time and Motion Study
• Select operators• Divide the operation into elements and record
a complete description of the method• Assign particular work to operators• Observe operators performing task: record
time taken for each element• Rate the operator’s performance• Determine appropriate work standards
CONCLUSION• Motion and time study can reduce
and control costs, improve working conditions and environment, and motivate people.
• Motion study offers a great potential for savings in any area of human effort
CONCLUSION• Time and Motion study develop
efficient and effective work methods, establish time standards, balance assembly lines, estimate labor costs, develop effective tooling, select proper equipment, and layout manufacturing facilities
