Maling Road, Canterbury
A beautifully considered collection of contemporary
living spaces, at home in one of Melbourne’s most
significant and celebrated destinations.
Time-Honoured
Canterbury’s legacy of culture, tradition and prestige stretches right
back to the people and industries that forged Melbourne.
The railway came in 1882, attracting traders, merchants and grocers
to this idyllic, rural outpost. Shopkeepers flocked to Canterbury
Road and Maling Road, bringing fresh goods and convenience.
The 1900s saw an influx of businesses, with chemists, mechanics,
hairdressers and clothing stores popping up to bolster the
community. The Maling Road Theatre opened in 1913, becoming
a gathering point for returned servicemen and women after
World War I, and turning Theatre Place into a social hub.
The theatre is gone now, but the sense of community still thrives.

Harry Robinson opened his tailor in 1938
to cater to the area’s discerning gentlemen.
The interior was typical of menswear
retailers of the era, with suits and shoeboxes
lining the walls, showcases and displays for
new stocks, and sharply dressed assistants to
encourage purchase. Harry was also the son
of local butcher, George Robinson

rich heritage with contemporary design to create
a dialogue between past and future.

This site contained at least two wooden
shops before the present building was
erected for Henry Paul’s pharmacy in 1904.
It was part-occupied by a confectionery,
then a dentist, until chemists took over in
1912. It remained a pharmacy until 1968,
traversing a time when the bulk of medicines
were mixed in-house, to the boom of factory
drug production.

Culture, Past and Present.
Canterbury is a community with deep roots balanced by a refined,
contemporary culture.
Canterbury’s charming, village feel and historical
significance create a timeless character, while the
wide, peaceful streets and surrounding parklands
add to a sense of tranquillity.
This serenity is offset by the excitement of Maling
Road’s high-end boutique shops and sumptuous
cafés, bars and restaurants. Close proximity
to the city and easy public transport options make
it simple to enjoy everything Melbourne is
famous for in sport, fashion, art and culture.

The Lawsons took over Mrs Storer’s shop
in the early 1920s and quickly developed
into a small, local chain, with six additional
shops including Maling Road, Mont Albert
Road and Canterbury Road. Generations
of Lawsons donned white coats and aprons
and pulled packets, bottles and tins from the
high shelves for their loyal customers. They
even produced their own brand of tea.

These internal spaces evoke the spirit of Victorian
terrace houses, reconceived with a contemporary
palette. They are offered in light and dark colour
schemes and present a homely elegance through
touches like granite kitchen sinks, fireplaces and drop-
down range hoods in all 3-bedroom residences.
The kitchens are warm and understated using fully-
integrated Miele dishwashers and Burner S/S cooktops,
with Miele and Smeg range hoods and built-in Fisher
and Paykel fridges. Finally, the sleek bathrooms are
finished with beautiful, rogerseller burnished-brass
tapware, and baths in most 3-bedroom residences.
Future Heritage101 Maling’s interiors extend the project narrative, reinventing and interpreting
the history surrounding it.
