DESCRIPTION

Gardening is both a science and an art. There are the inner workings of plants, how they obtain nutrients from the soil and convert sunlight into energy, and also the study of our entire ecosystem. And then there are the careful combinations of plants and hardscape that make up the art of designing a garden. This season, we have books that address them both. For those interested in science, we’ve created a new series, called Timber Press Science for Gardeners. It makes scientific concepts accessible to home gardeners. In addition to rebranding bestsellers like Botany for Gardeners and Teaming with Microbes, we are also adding two new books to the series. How Plants Work explains plant physiology. It reveals the mysteries behind a plant’s ability to move, tell time, and change color, among other wonders. The Gardener’s Guide to Weather and Climate explains the big picture (how climate is created and how it is changing) and the small scale (how plants react to weather and how gardeners can make their planted areas more weather resilient). For those interested in art we have Color Concrete Garden Projects, a helpful primer that focuses on the art of garden making with 20 step-by-step projects that readers can make to enhance their outdoor spaces. And for those who want it all, we have a few books that combine art and science. Annie Martin, author of The Magical World of Moss Gardening, calls herself a moss artist, and she designs beautiful gardens full of bryophytes—but she does not ignore the fascinating science behind how mosses have evolved and what makes them grow. The Indestructible Houseplant shows how to create stunning indoor displays while also giving information on how to keep indoor plants thriving even in less-than-hospitable conditions. This spring let’s celebrate everything that goes into bringing a garden to life!

We all need nature in our lives, yet most of our time is spent indoors. So we bring nature in by adding houseplantsbut how do we choose the right ones? How do we keep them alive? By making the right choices from the beginning.

The Indestructible Houseplant, by garden writer Tovah Martin, eliminates the guesswork by highlighting indoor plants that are tough, beautiful, reliable, and readily available. Like hoya, a low-maintenance plant whose spectacular spring and summer blossoms actually thrive on neglect. Or Ficus elastica (also known as rubber tree), whose pink and gray leaves will brighten even the most challenging, windowless environment. And castiron plant, an old favorite that remains beautiful in a shady corner, even after weeks without water.

In addition to plant profiles with concise information on water, light, and blooming times, this gorgeous book includes tips on care, maintenance, and ideas for combining houseplants in eye-catching indoor displays. Stunning color photographs offer inspiration for incorporating houseplants into a variety of dcors.

All gardeners are at the whim of Mother Nature, and most are obsessed with weather. When is the last frost? What is the chance for rain? Will late-spring hail affect my flower beds? The answers to questions like these play a significant role in a gardeners success.

The Gardeners Guide to Weather and Climate gives home gardeners an accessible yet comprehensive overview of how the weather works, and offers tips on how to use the information to create better gardens. Throughout, the reader will find hundreds of helpful color photographs and illustrations that bring the concepts to life.

Clear photographs aid in the safe identification of edible, nonedible, and poisonous mushrooms

The Timber Press Field Guide series has over 80,000 copies in print and has focused on the wildflowers, insects, mushrooms, and wildlife of the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Now, we are expanding the series to the rest of the United States.

In Mushrooms of the Rocky Mountain Region, Vera Evanson, curator of the Sam Mitchel Herbarium of Fungi at the Denver Botanic Gardens, covers species of mushrooms found in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. This comprehensive guide features introductory chapters on the basics of mushroom structure, life cycles, and habitats. Profiles for 170 mushroom species include color photographs, keys, and diagrams to aid in identification, and tips on how to recognize and avoid poisonous mushrooms. Mushroom descriptions are not overly technical and are accessible to the average reader.

Mushrooms of the Rocky Mountain Region is for mushroom hunters, hikers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to know more about and be able to better identify the many mushrooms of the region.

    Edibles A to Z 177

    176 Edibles A to Z

    OnionsOnions have a reputation fo

    r being a challenging

crop, but these culinary essentials are actually a

cinch when you choose the right types and use the

right timing for our region. For a year-round kitchen

staple, choose storage types, like pungent yellow bul-

bing onions and lesser-knownbut extremely easy to

grow in our regionperennial multiplier onions. Crisp

green onions give your cooking a professional touch,

and theyre very easy to grow. For a growing guide

for perennial multiplier onions (i.e., potato onions

and shallots) see the October chapter; if you plan to

grow perennial onions, be sure to order bulbs well in

    advance of fall planting.

GROWING Bulbing onions have only a short window of

time to grow before spring heat or lengthening days trig-

ger the bulbs to stop growing and start drying down. To

ensure they have enough time to grow before this hap-

pens, Southeast gardeners sow onion seeds in the fall

through very early spring, and choose the right varieties

for our latitude. Short Day (SD) types bulb with 1012 hours

of daylight; grow these south of 35N. Northern garden-

ers grow Long Day (LD) types, which bulb with 1416 hours

of daylight; these are best grown north of 38N. If youre

in between these latitudes, like many of us in the Upper

South, choose LD varieties that mature on the early side

(look at the day length), or choose SD varieties. Youll have

the best results if you sow in fall and keep the seedlings

growing over winter in the greenhouse, cold frame, or

    under row cover.

In the Upper South, sow bulbing onion seeds in a cold

frame or greenhouse. In the Lower South, gardeners can

direct sow bulbing onion seeds in the garden. Sow the

seeds inch apart if you plan to transplant later, or 2

inches apart if you direct sow. Thin to about 3 inches apart

    .

Cover with fine soil or compost, inch deep. Be sure

to transplant when the seedlings are still a little narrower

than a pencil, and by early spring (February). Onions dont

tolerate weeds, so prioritize weeding this crop. Provide

ample moisture. Organic mulch helps keep down the weed

    s

and keeps in water and nutrients. Practice crop rotation of

at least three years to control pests and diseases.

Traditional green onions (often sold as bunching onions)

only do really well in our region in the fall through spring

(under cover where winters are cold). Sow them just like

bulbing onions, but at about inch apart and thin or tran

    s-

plant to at least 1 inch apart. (Turn to perennial bunching

chives for green onion style in the hottest months.) Sow

just once in the fall, or for lots sow once in the fall and

again in the early spring. A single sowing can be harvested

    over an extended period.

HARVESTING For bulbing onions, pull up the whole crop

in one harvest for the easiest curing and storage. When

half of the tops have fallen over, pull up the bulbs and cure

them by hanging or spreading under cover with good ven-

tilation, for two to three weeks. Theyre done curing when

the necks have thoroughly dried. Clip off the tops to within

1 inch of the bulb and store in mesh bags in a well-ventilate

    d

place. For green onions, whenever the tops are big enough,

you can start harvesting. Pull them up whole.

VARIETIES Short Day (SD) varieties: Texas Early Grano

(100 days) is often called the mother of all sweet onions,

and Granex hybrid (80 days) is one of the famous sweet

Vidalia types. Long Day (LD) varieties: Yellow of Parma

(110 days) was the best storage onion in our 2011 trials, and

Red Wethersfield (100 days) was grown by Jefferson at

    Monticello.

For green onions, Deep Purple (60 days) brings extra

color, just on the bottoms. Evergreen Hardy White (65

days) reliably overwinters even in The North.

SEED SAVING Isolate varieties by a minimum of 150 feet.

For pure seed, cage plants or isolate by mile.

    ParsnipsSweet, nutty parsnips are h

    ardy, easy-to-grow root

vegetables, closely related to carrots. Parsnips are

slow growing, so be patient! Theyre worth the wait.

Heavy frosts sweeten the roots, and theyll happily

wait in the ground until youre ready to harvest. For

gardeners looking to eat locally year round, parsnips

are an old staple worth rediscovering.

GROWING Sow parsnip seeds inch deep, one to two

seeds per inch, in rows 18 inches apart, as soon as the

soil can be worked in the spring, and by July at the latest.

Very far-south and coastal areas may have better results

sowing in September for spring harvest. Soak the seeds

for 24 hours before sowing to help germination. When your

plants emerge, thin to 4-inch spacing. Your soil should be

well drained and not too rich. The top 10 inches or deeper

should be loose and clod free. Dont let the soil dry out

while the seeds are germinating, which can take up to thre

    e

weeks. Sow radishes every 34 inches to prevent soil crust-

ing and mark the rows. Liberal mulch will help give even

    moisture to the plants.

HARVESTING Use a garden fork to loosen the soil around

the roots before pulling them. For the best-tasting pars-

nips, harvest after a few frosts. You can leave the plants in

the ground all winter, but cover them with a thick layer of

organic mulch and harvest before new top growth starts

in the spring. Parsnips grown in frost-free areas may not

develop the same frost-touched sweetness. Cut off the

leaves inch above the top of the root and store as you

    would carrots.

VARIETIES Heirloom varieties Hollow Crown and Turga

both have stout roots good for clay soils. Both are ready in

about 100 days, perfect for either spring or fall sowings.

SEED SAVING Isolate varieties of this biennial by mile

for home use. Overwinter and allow to flower. Harvest

seeds when they are brown and allow them to dry in a

    single layer for two weeks.
