To whom it may concern:

It is with pleasure that I recommend Anthony Tilley for your highest consideration for a position as a

Mechanical Engineer. My name is Tom Johnston, I have been a full time instructor at SDSU in mechanical

engineering for 13 years. My expertise is in Solid Modeling and computer aided design (CAD). I am writing

you this correspondence on behalf of Anthony who was one of my most steadfast and determined students and

was at the very top of my classes. Anthony was an avid listener who showed superior command,

organizational skills, and understanding of the CAD material taught in Solid Modeling 101. His hard work

was evident in all of his work.

Solid Modeling 101 is an introductory course, which requires that a student show a grasp of how to use both

Pro Engineer (Creo) and SolidWorks for the purpose of design. It is expected that students leave my class

with the ability to use both programs to construct parts, assemblies and working drawings which are correctly

toleranced, dimensioned and ready for manufacture. Anthony has shown a firm grasp of dimensional

tolerances, standard fits and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Also, he has a thorough knowledge of

the design and graphic representation of common fasteners, a keen eye for an aesthetically pleasing

arrangement of views, assembly and detail drawings and how to correctly construct assemblies. Having

performed so well in my class, I am confident that he can apply these skills to learn any new program he

might have to learn. Anthony has also received A’s in the two other classes I taught, principals of Electrical

Engineering, (EE204) and Solid Modeling II (ME102). ME102 includes FEA analysis and serves as a more

open ended design class as well as an extension of ME 101.

Seeing Anthony take the skills learned in my classes into advanced classes to design complex and innovative

projects which required a heavy amount of stress and thermal analysis has been a real treat. Mr. Tilley has

gone on to design and manufacture a robot assisted mechanical arm, a pressure vessel, a four bar linkage and a

door utilized in an apparatus used for spark plasma extrusion working underneath the Department Chair of

Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Khalid Morsi. In conclusion I believe Anthony would be a welcome addition

and asset to your team.

Sincerely,

Thomas Johnston - Instructor
