TILL MY STARS ARE OUT By Alex Umole

    INTRODUCTION

A few months ago, I sat in the neighbourhood library. Iwas preparing for a professional exam which was to take placethe following month. I sat that day engrossed in my handbooks, working! I was ensuring that I sink into my mind every legaldetail required for me to sail on top, to come out in colours.Although within my doubtful heart lingered a ray of fear; the fearof failure, which somehow propelled me to study.

This fear notified every single nerve of my body and hotdrops of sweat rolled down from my forehead as evidence that Iwas indeed reading!

Meanwhile my mind began to wander, my eyes were fixedon the black ink on white paper before me, but my mind wasclose to Mount Everest!

In the midst of all this, a female colleague walked behind me andwhispered to my hearing, Well done. Thank you, I saidsmiling, I was happy about the idea that I was caught Reading. It feels so good to be caught doing the right thing!

How are you Alex? I am fine and you? I am okay, just tryingto jack. (The word Jack is a slang meaning Read). Alex,we have so much to jack. Yea, I know, but we have nochoice, do we?

As I said this, I reasoned; do we really have a choice? Sure we do.Life is made up of choices. We can decide to give up, sit backand do nothing. We still have made a choice; A choice to fail!Thats the choice I rather not make.

When do you plan to leave the library? She continued. Well, Iguess I would keep reading, jacking and then start soaking tillthe library closes. (I was humorously using the word soaking tomean the advanced stage of reading.)

Really? Thats good. For me I would rush off now to cook for myparents at home. Then I will sit down to read. I will surely stayup and work till night time, till the stars are out and till my stars

    come out!

TILL MY STARS ARE OUT By Alex Umole

    We then exchanged good-natured remarks. She left thelibrary leaving those heavy words hanging in the already denseatmosphere;

...I will surely work till my stars come out!

I kept thinking about those fiery words, and the significance theyconveyed. Those words exploded like a shooting star andincreased the fire of desire within me, a desire to achieve mydreams and goals, to excel.

The words stirred up a growing desire and a burning hunger formy stars and a desire to reach the highest heights. There andthen, a fresh goal was born in me, so was the title of this work. Imust work till my stars are out, that is what I resolve to do.

Yesterday, a young Ethiopian girl named Adanech recounted herthrilling life story in an interview on T.V. She lost her an arm andone leg in a ghastly train accident. But inspite of her impedimentshe made up her mind to do everything a normal person would doand do it well. She decided to work till her stars come out! She

spent hours training herself to use what she still has effectively.

Today she plays football, keyboard, Basketball, baseball andswims for her school - all with one leg and one hand! She is nowthe student president of her school. She resolved to work till herstars are out.

The essence of this little book is to inspire you to work on yourdreams. May it fire you up to remain persistent in reaching forth

for your goals and to dream big continually. To aim for the moonso that even if you miss it, you can still land among the stars.

May it motivate you to know the essence of being yourself. Maythis work cause you to keep dreaming in the midst of setbacks, sothat ultimately, all said and done, youll have the confidence, nomatter what happens, that indeed - You won!

    DEFINING MOMENTS

Brace yourself. Get thinking, Get up. This is the moment whenyou meet the man in the mirror, so lets begin the

    introduction!

I was asleep that night, and in my dream world it was as if I wasin the cinema hall watching myself in a movie! I cannot exactlyremember the details of the experience, but my sweat-soakedbedsheet indicated that it must have been a tough one.

All I can remember was that I suddenly woke up with the wordson my lips; know yourself and dont let your lifestyle sabotageyour vision. I awoke that weird night, I got thinking; wassomeone trying to tell me something? Was I ignorant about mylife? Was I living right? Was I trying to be someone else?

I picked up the telephone. It was late; there was a nebulousdarkness across the moonlit sky. I dialed the number of one of myfriends. His phone rang and he picked up the phone.

Hello my man, this is Alex, sorry I called you at this unusualhour. I hope I didnt disturb you? Even though I knew I did, tothe extent that I knew that if he had a gun he could have shotme through the phone!

Oh no, not at all, he responded yawning, which went to showthat he was only being polite.

I went ahead and narrated my dream, or you may call it ordeal.I told him as much as I could remember. I think I have to get toknow myself more, I said. Sure, everyone does. He repliedand continued. The bottom line is that we all have to beourselves to know ourselves, we are truly more than the body wesee.

One of the major problems around now is that most of us aretrying to be like someone else. He muttered, still yawning.

Conformity kills originality, I opined and continued, I reallythink that the opposite of courage is not fear, its conformity. Forwe insult the creator to his face when we try to extinguish our

    peculiarity and embrace uniformity.

Someone said; where the two of us are exactly alike, then oneof us is irrelevant. I became so excited about what I was saying(It started becoming a sermon), so I suggested to my friend that Icome over to his apartment. He liked the idea, but he reallyneeded his sleep.

Alex, I would really like to sleep now, he asserted. Ok,anyway thanks for talking with me. You are welcome Alex. Butbefore I drop the phone I will like to say that the moment hascome for you to know more about who you are and what you aremeant to do.

Alex, be the person, you are meant to be. Search for yourdefinition. You are more than what you do. So never allow yoursense of self to become associated with your sense of job.

Discover you! Its the task only you are entrusted with.Goodnight Alex, we would see tomorrow. He said these wordsand dropped the phone.

I went back to my bed to sleep, but I couldnt sleep. I began tothink about the man I would become, that I could become. Ibegan to paint pictures. I began to dream.

    WE ARE ALL PAINTERS

Last year, I visited the Albertina in Vienna, Austria; an artbuilding containing works of famous artists. The works ofMichelangelo were the art-works that thrilled me the most.

It reminded me of the story I was told, that one day the greatartist Michelangelo saw a block of marble that the owner saidwas of no value. It is valuable to me, said Michelangelo. There is an angel imprisoned in it, and I must set it free. Hisvision and his capacity to paint pictures in his mind createdmasterpiece sculptures from what others saw as junk marble!

We all think in pictures. It is this capacity that is referred to asIMAGINATION. We all carry photographs in our mind. These

images are what make us the men we are and they often, withtime, cloth themselves with physical manifestation.

I recall the touching tale of the young girl at the Special Olympicstrack-meet, who had the courage to see herself as she wanted tobe, she cultivated her ability to paint a good picture of herself.

The girl won the 50-yard dash and was jumping all excited. Sheyelled out to her parents, Look, mum and dad, I won. Her

parents instantly burst into tears. The young girl proudly stoodthere as a medal was placed around her neck, then she ran overto her parents, who were now crying even more than before.Three of them hugged as her parents kept crying.

An official in the games, who had watched this whole scene, became concerned and went over to the young girls parents andsaid, Excuse me is anything wrong. Through her tears, themother said, No nothing is wrong, everything is right. We just

heard our daughter speak for the very first time!

TILL MY STARS ARE OUT By Alex Umole

The young girl was born dumb, but in her mind she picturedherself talking. She held that picture in her heart and carried itas she trained to be the best, that very day her thoughts

    revealed themselves. She talked!

We are all painters; we are products of the pictures we paintedin our hearts and minds. I know this to be true; if a man holds adream long enough in his heart, soon enough he will hold it in hishand. Pictures, thoughts and ideas held constantly in ones mindwill always manifest themselves at the earliest opportunity or atworst, eventually!I sincerely believe that not until you capture a picture, (like acamera would) you cannot capture your future. So every youngman should set out in life carrying only images, pictures andthoughts of what he wants in his life and future.

    Carter G. Woodson, the author of the book, The Mis-educationof the Negro people said;

If you can determine what a man can think,You never have to concern yourself with what he would do.

If you can make a man feel inferior, you never have to compel

Him to seek an inferior status, for he will seek it himself. And if you can make a man feel justly an outcast, you never

haveto order him to go through the back door, he will go without

beingtold, and if theres no door, his very nature will demand one.

The truth is that; you will become as small as your controllingdesire but only as big as your dominant aspiration and as great as

    the pictures in your head.

Decide you wont idly think or lazy around. If you snooze, youlose. Dream! Then stay awake to realize them. I am told that thetwo founders of the successful Google, an internet searchwebsite, where just average Stanford University students. Theywere young, but they were dreamers, they were good painters. They painted a great idea and a picture of a great company thathas generated millions of dollars today.

TILL MY STARS ARE OUT By Alex Umole

You are a student; begin to think of yourself as an excellentstudent. You are not unintelligent! You are as good as thebrightest student in your class. But you have to think of yourself

as so, only then can your genius find expression to give you theenthusiasm to work and excel.

I read of one man named Biodun Marguis in 2001, he claims creditfor having created Nigerias first computer. I am not sure of thefoundation of his assertion, but the report says that he startedmanufacturing his own note-book computer, which he named -pragmatic notebook.

From his own mouth, he asserted that he stumbled upon the ideaof manufacturing laptops, because he had always had thethoughts of producing technological equipments from childhood!True to the words - Every man ultimately becomes a self-portraitof his dream.

Everyday, dreamers make their dreams come true. Everyday, great scientists are discovered and their inventions uncovered.Theres room for you. Theres always room for good painters, but you have to develop the hunters attitude knowing that

wherever you go, there are ideas to be discovered and caught.

In the year 2000, a man by the name Alexander Amosu wasplaying around with the composer facility on his Nokia 3310phone and realized how easily he could re-create his favoriteRnB tunes, by keying notes into the memory, which he did andthen sent it to his brother.

His brother was at school at the time and his phone rang and all

his friends asked; Where did that ringtone come from? By theend of the day, Alexander Amosu had seven people contactinghim for the ringtone.

With this discovery, he set up his own cottage industry out of hisparents council house. Within four months the ringtone companywhich he formed had moved into its own office in a choice placein the U.K and was employing more than 20 staff.

TILL MY STARS ARE OUT By Alex Umole

In 2002, Alexander Amosus company turned over 1.2 millionpounds, the truth? Amosu was a great idea-hunter, or better still,a good painter!

I like what Henry D. Thoreau said, If you have built castles inthe air, your work need not be lost. That is where they shouldbe. Now put the foundation under them.

Theres something you must do, it may be something in you weremeant to develop. It may be a hobby you were designed to turnto an industry or an idea you were meant to make big. So get upand do it. Most times you do not need a University degree to doit.

All you need is that simple insight into that thing you must do.Dont let anyone talk you down. Anything anybody says about youis merely an opinion, except you accept it. There are nolimitations except your mind says so. You are your limit!

    DREAMERS AND STRIVERS

In recent times, one of the events that have intrigued me is thecontroversy over the genuineness of one mans claim to havefound the HIV/AIDs vaccine to cure the disease. His name - Dr.Jeremiah Abalaka.

The medical establishment argued against the possibility of acure being found by Abalaka on the premise that theres noempirical explanation for the said vaccine yet. In other words, they were saying that a cure cannot be found yet.

This is what I like about dreamers; they are always ahead of theirtime. Remember the Wright brothers? The whole academy ofscience gathered and concluded that it is impossible to fly apiece of iron on air. The Wright brothers proved them wrong by

    making the Airplane fly!

TILL MY STARS ARE OUT By Alex Umole

I like dreamers! They challenge the norm and even though adreamers claim turns out to be wrong. One thing remains; hehas expanded the possibilities for mankind to one day make that

    claim a reality.

Only dreamers can change the world. Indeed, they are the onlyones that ever have. For sure, the dreamers change is not madewithout inconveniencies. When Alexander Fleming woke anunbelieving world early last century with this claim of discoveryof penicillin, the reception was predictable: Laughter. But yearslater, everyone hailed him as a hero.

You must dream! Do not follow the path others have, instead gowhere theres no path and leave your footprints. You must neverfollow the crowd, if you want the crowd to follow you. Millionssaw the apple fall, but Isaac Newton was the one who askedwhy. Learn to question the norm.

As every inventor has the burden of proof, every dreamer has theburden to make his dream come true. So beyond dreaming youmust be a striver. Strivers achieve what dreamers believe.Dream, then act!

Have dreams made of rainbow, plans made of steel and actionsmade of a Lions heart! Be a dreamer and then be a striver. Youwill win.

Last week, I was fortunate to drive a cross town with a wealthyman in his luxury car. The comfort and the coziness I felt inspiredme. So I became desirous of finding out how he made it big.

I asked him. He said simply, I dream a lot, even before I havethe time to sleep. Before he went further, I interjected andasked him whether he has read any major book on wealth like,Think and grow Rich. He said, No. What of the book, TheRichest man in Babylon? He said, No. Then how did youbecome so big? He then replied, My major stride comesbecause I strive until I arrive.

Dear reader, you dont really need to read any more books than

the ones you have already read. In you is all it takes to succeed.Success is a natural outcome of spending your time doing the

right thing! In this case it is to know and take the relevant actionto maximize the seasons you go through. Get up, dream, decide, then do it. You would pick some of the things you need along the

way as you move. Nobodys guaranteed a great start, but you caninfluence your finish.

    I read an old advice given by a father to his son and it went thus;

...my lad, youve all that the greatest of men have had, twoarms, two hands, two legs, two eyes and a brain to use if you

would be wise. With this equipment they all began, so start for the top and say,

    I can.

Strive, be willing to move and walk over the edge. Act as if itwere impossible to fail, because for you it is! For heaven isbehind you.

Dr. Holmes said, Never tell a young person that somethingcannot be done. God may have been waiting for centuries forsomebody ignorant enough of the impossible to do that thing.

Break the glass ceiling, break every limitation! Let your reachexceed your grasp. Talk about your dream with enthusiasm. Walktowards it with conviction.

Say only good things about yourself. If you keep saying thatthings are going to be bad, you have a chance of being a prophet!Use your mouth to construct your future.

I remember the story told by Conrad Hilton about an illiterate

man who went to a bank to seek out a job as a janitor (officecleaner). The bank manager who interviewed him for the jobasked him whether he could spell his name he said NO. Thebank manager then told him that he was of not useful; hence hewas not employable. But the man told himself that even though he could not spell hisname, he will one day be successful! The man decided to act onhis dream and he travelled to the United States.

Many years later, a wealthy businessman called a pressconference in Washington and the reporters and pressmen began

  • 8/4/2019 Till My Stars Are Out

    14/25

TILL MY STARS ARE OUT By Alex Umole

to ask this uneducated but wealthy man many questions, one ofwhich was how he became so successful, he answered all theirquestions to their utmost satisfaction.

Then one reporter stood up and suggested to this wealthybusinessman, Why dont you write your autobiography? Icannot read or write, he responded.

Supposing you can read and write, how far would you havegone? Asked the reporter. The wealthy businessman replied, Iwould have been a janitor!

You may not look like the world now, but you look like yourfuture. So get on fire with your dreams! When you are on firewith your dreams, the world will come to watch you burn. Butyou must first dream and go after your dream like a sea-seekingriver and its force. Have a purpose that never swerves.

    The strivers lifestyle is best encapsulated in the thrilling wordsof an old poem;

If you want a thing bad enough, then go out and fight for it!Work day and night for it; give up your time, your peace andyour sleep for it.

If all that you dream and scheme is about it and life seemsuseless and worthless without it and if you can gladly sweat forit, fret for it and plan for it and loose all your terror of theopposition for it.

And if you simply go after that thing that you want with all ofyour capacity, strength and sagacity, faith, hope and confidenceand stern pertinacity.

If neither cold or poverty, famine nor gall, sickness or pain ofbody and brain can keep you away from that thing that youwant. If dogged and grim you besiege and beset it, with the helpof God you will get it

Its my earnest desire that you dream and strive, so you can go tothe top, because its the bottom thats overcrowded. Dream andgo to the top, because thats where you are meant to be. Strive

and go to the top, because you are more than the eyes of mencan see. Now go for it!

    THE FORCE OF FREQUENCY

At the Atlanta Olympics, one woman made a leap that shockedthe world and it put her countrys name on the global athleticsmap. Her 17 metre leap, an African record, demolished allopposition in her way. Her name? Nigerias Chioma Ajunwa.

This historic performance came after a four year ban. When shewas banned, virtually everyone thought the career of thispolicewoman turned sports woman was over, but if the worldgave up her, she didnt give up on herself.

One of the reasons, she explained, which made her to survivewhat she called; The years of the locust, was that sheconcentrated on frequent training. Eventually the ban was lifted. The rest is history.

Her achievement gives credence to the statement that: Theman of the hour spent many nights getting there.

Success is habits, all else are details. The milestone of championscomes as a result of their ability to consistently take steps thatkeep them at the level of champions. Though their goal is to dogreat and noble tasks, but they make it their chief duty toaccomplish small tasks daily, as if they were great and noble.

At a seminar I was invited to speak, the speaker before merecounted the inspiring story of a re-known pianist. One day thisfamed pianist walked into a room, only to find a completestranger behind the piano, playing it with tremendous skill anddexterity.

The re-known pianist observed that this stranger played so well, better than anyone he had ever seen before, even himself. Thisis the greatest pianist on earth, he thought to himself.

TILL MY STARS ARE OUT By Alex Umole

Suddenly, this stranger stopped. Stood up, turned to the re-known pianist and said, I am the man that you should havebeen, if you hadnt stopped improving yourself. He went

further, Every time you play that piece on the piano, play itbetter than you played it before. Play it frequently. You willsweat, but keep at it. You can never have sweet without sweat. How true!

Develop the force of frequency. Start working on yourself. Itsyour nature that determines your future. Perform little tasks. Doit frequently.Lets start with your day; when you wake up in the morning, what habits do you consciously cultivate? For a man is sculpturedby each minute he leaves behind him, and what he does with thenext determines how it makes him.

What is your daily routine? Cultivate the habit of waking early.Have an alarm clock in your soul. Let your burning desire toreach your dreams fire you up! Wake before the cock crows, sothat you can rise above a cock life. Then start to work towardsyour stars.

Surround yourself with an enabling environment; for example putpictures around you that point to your dreams, paste your goalson your wall for you to see constantly, surround yourself withonly right thinking friends. Dreams need fresh air to breathe inorder to grow. Whoever or whatever does not value your vision, does not belong to your future.

Bad habits creep on you, but good habits must be developed. Sostart now to create a great nature in yourself that leads to your

great future. Tomorrow is the only day that appeals to a lazyman. Act today, Act daily. The truth is, when it comes to makingexcuses, the world is somehow full of manufacturers. Throwaway excuses; you have no reason to fail!

Cultivate frequency and persistency. Be persistent in all you do,doing it constantly. Remember the illustration of the stonecutter, hammering away at the rock, perhaps 100 times withoutas much as a crack showing in it.

Yet at the 101st blow it will split in two and we knowit was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

TILL MY STARS ARE OUT By Alex Umole

Someone said, To be the best, you must first beat the best, andfor you to beat the best, you must do two things. Firstly, know

what the best is doing and secondly, do it better. To do itbetter, you must do it frequently.

Hey! There are things you know that are good for you to do, youmust do them now and do them everyday. Great steps mustbecome habitual to unlock the greatness within them.

You must be regular, be committed. Autograph your work withabsolute dedication. Talent without the frequency of cultivatingit denies a man the luxury of the word; Success.

An athlete said, after winning the Long distance race; All I hadto do was keep turning left on my track. Keep doing that goodaction. Greatness doesnt come in halves, its start to finish. Youmust keep at it.

Let your time each day be seed not bread. Sow it planning, sow itpraying and sow it reading. Unleash the greatness in your actions;but they must first become habits. You must channel the force of

frequency, till your stars are out!

    ELEVATORS GO DOWN TOO

You may be among the many having difficult times now, but it issoon going to become history. It will not last. Remember the

phrase, Tough times never last, but tough people do. Thetough times may linger but in the end you will come out awinner.

    I once wrote a poem and it contained these words;

...even the rain of blessing can become a flood of death...

In it was expressed the idea, that in an apparent advantage maybe found a major disadvantage and vice versa.

What took you up may bring you down. But life demands that youtake caution for the thorns, but you should only focus on theroses. Elevators (or lift) take you up, but go down too.

As humans, we sometimes have failed plans, unmet expectationsand discouragements. We are not perfect. Some suggest thatthese pains are a way the creator allows his purposes prevail overour plans. But I know that the hard times are meant for the goodtimes, as every problem introduces a person to himself andprepares him for greatness.

However, as much as we reach forth as go-getters, we mustremain God-getters, in other to be prepared for all that life holdsfor us. Right before our mountains and down times we must learnto Trust in the lord with all our hearts and lean not upon ourown understanding.

Acknowledge your creator in your up-times as well as your down-times. God is a glory-eating spirit. He wants us to see hisstrength in our weakness, so we can let him and his word, be our

    chief consultant.

As the elevator of life goes down while we are in it, we mustpress the right button! Hold on to God and dont quit on life.Keep living. Overcome the obstacles, more will come, butovercome them. The more the obstacles you overcome, in it liesthe measurement of our triumph.

Les brown said, When life knocks you down, try to land on your

back, because if you can look up, you can get up.

TILL MY STARS ARE OUT By Alex Umole

You must try, even if you fail. You must keep trying. You mustbounce back when you hit bottom and keep trying. You musthave courage, the kind of courage that was defined by Winston

Churchill; as the capacity to move from failure to failurewithout losing enthusiasm. Keep your heart strong, keep yourhead going the right direction and you wont have to worry aboutyour feet.

I must share with you, the poem written by Edgar A. Guest whichwent thus:

Tis better to have tried in vainSincerely striving for a goal,Than to have lived upon the plain,An idle and a timid soul.Tis better to have fought and spentYour courage missing all applause,Than to have lived in smug contentAnd never ventured for a cause. For he who tries and fails,May be the founder of a better day.Though never his victory,From him shall others learn the way.

Keep trying and striving towards your stars. The darkest nightcomes before the brightest morning. You will succeed. You areGods very own champion, his shinning star!

Just trust your future to God; he knows what lies ahead, because your future is his past. Let him write your story. He maybring in some pressures into the script, just to bring out theprecious in you and make you his hero.

So even when the elevator of life is going down, just hold

on, stay strong. Dont stop. Dont quit. Keep faith and in theend, you will be glad you did.

I must share with you the words of a poem titled I wrotesometime last year, it went thus:

    LIKE THE POSTAGE STAMP

I choose not to give up,Till I get to the top.

For persistency pays off,Often more than talent would,

Ask the snail, he will tell you its true.

I choose to remain strong,To always correct myself when I am wrong.

Though the road may seem rough,I vow to be tough.

I choose to be confidentTo face the world

Like Gods very own champion,Which I am.

I choose to stick to my dream,Till I get to the winners realm,

I choose to keep my eyes on my goal,I choose never to let go.

    Just like the postage stamp.

    YOU WILL WIN

Two things are guaranteed in life; firstly, you can do anythingyou set your mind to do. Secondly, no matter what happens, inthe end you will win.

You may have doubts, you may be uncertain but you willwin. However you must have a will to win. The true measure of aman is in the length of his ideals, the depth of his convictions, the breadth of his actions and the height of his dreams.

Someone said, The world is full of willing people; somewilling to work, the rest willing to watch them. Most peopleare not really willing to win. They are merely desirous.

Willing is not just desiring. Willing entails using your willto carry your work through. Life cant give you joy and peace;its up to you to will it. Life just gives you time and space; itsup to you to fill it (unknown author).

Let your actions reflect your will to win. Breed winningstrategies to avoid losing tragedies. Its what you are on theinside that wins, thats the you inside of you. Hes the one thatwill make the you men see to work, to study and to win.

The biggest crime you can commit today is going to bed asignorant as you had awakened. So work on yourself. Be a winner.
