WELCOME We are a proud school, with mana in our history and even more potential waiting in the wings.

We care about our tamariki here, from year 7 all the way to year 13.

We learn with them, and work with them to ensure our tamariki reach their potential.

We succeed in bringing positive learning experiences to our students and their whanau. We strive for the best standards possible and for our tamariki to be successful.

We invite you to visit our school and learn more about the education and opportunities we can offer your child.

Ko te awhinatanga, te matauranga, te mana tangata me te rangatiratanga nga uara o ta tatou kura. Te Kura o Tukua o Punga. Ko te angitu o te akonga te whainga, kia eke a ia ki nga taumata puta noa.

Alec Solomon Tumuaki/Principal

VISION Tikipunga High School will provide effective leadership, quality teaching and an environment which engages our community. All of this is supported by good governance. This provides the foundation for us to achieve our vision that every student:

• Has the right to be a successful learner;

• Will be viewed as a taonga (treasure) with talents and special aptitudes which will provide the platform upon which his or her personalised learning program is based;

• Has their mana (identity) acknowledged and valued;

• Will not be given up on;

• Has the right to experience New Zealand’s cultural diversity and understand the unique position of things Mãori;

• Has their learning needs catered for;

• Has the provision to study Te Reo Mãori from year 7-13;

• Will be provided with a variety of opportunities;

• Is confident their successes will be celebrated.

SCHOOL CREST Our school crest serves as a visual metaphor for what we stand for as a school. It was designed by a former Deputy Principal of Tikipunga High School, Clive Williams.

The T in the crest refers not only to the ‘T’ in the word Tikipunga but visually it also represents the power and beauty of Otuihau (the Whangarei Falls). The tuna (eel) which is illustrated shows the importance of determination and perseverance which it the tuna displays in its life cycle by travelling all the way to Tonga to breed. The three punga (eel traps) show by implication the importance of working alongside others as a means to getting the best outcomes.

We offer top quality education to all our students covering the essential learning areas. Students are encouraged to achieve personal excellence by studying subjects in-depth to expand their knowledge, understanding and skills. Our timetable is structured in a way that allows senior students to study subjects at different levels in the same year. We are happy to tailor courses to suit individual student’s needs and interest. Please just talk to us!

YEARS 7 & 8 In Years 7 and 8, students study core subjects and receive specialist teaching in Te Reo Māori, Art, Physical Education, Technology classes in Design Wood, Digital Technology Food, Textiles and Music. Special attention is given to any student experiencing learning difficulties through Specialist Teacher and Teacher Aide assistance and support.

YEAR 9 All students study English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education. The remaining curriculum areas will be covered by a multi course structure of term modules: Art, Design Wood, Digital Technology, Food, Textiles and Music.

YEAR 10 In Year 10 all students take English, Health & Physical Education, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Students then choose two option subjects they will wish to study: Design Wood, Te Reo Māori, Art, Digital Technology, Food Technology and Textiles.

SENIOR SCHOOL – YEARS 11, 12 & 13 Our school guides students’ entry into courses according to their career path and their own individual learning needs. Our timetable allows five subject choices at multiple levels if required. Students in the senior school will study towards a National Certificate of Achievement (NCEA). Students gain credits towards their goals by achieving the required standards within each subject.

STAR (Secondary-Tertiary Alignment

Resource) STAR funding allows senior student to complete short courses of study to gain NCEA credits in a wide range of areas, as diverse as First Aid, Defensive Driving, barista skills and so much more. These courses are provided by educators such as private training organisations and North Tec.
