LANCE GRAY’S ALMANOR TOUR TUESDAY JUNE 26, 2018Lew LeichterAt our October meeting Lance told us about his “tours”.There seemed to be a lot of interest, so we’ve reservedthis date. Per Lance our tour will be different than theone described on his website as follows:

The “Hex Tour” is a simple right to the point tour. Thefocus point is the Hexagenia and the areas at LakeAlmanor where it is found. We meet at 10 AM and spendthe day touring the entire lake pointing out access areas, fishing tips for each fishing access and the equipment and

flies that we use during our guiding operation. The tour is much more than just about where andwhen. We cover the entomology of the Hexagenia and why it’s found at Lake Almanor. This hands-on tour gives the fly fisher a firm understanding on the Hex.

The tour includes a lake front tri-tip dinner, rigging and an evening of fishing on the lake. The tourstarts at 10 AM and ends at dark after fishing. Handouts on the tour are provided, including a mapof the lake, equipment and rigging setups and a breakdown of the areas where you will find theHex.The cost for the day is $85 per person and the maximum is 10. We need to send Lance a 50%deposit so if you want to participate let me know and send me a $45 deposit. Make the checkout to Lance Gray & Company. We’ll send you all the info from Lance when we get yourdeposit.

New Zealand Travel and Fishing(February - March 2017)

Joe FramWe finally made it to New Zealand after 32 years of anticipation this past spring. This presentationwill discuss our six weeks of traveling around the North and South Island of New Zealand whichincluded a few episodes of chasing the ‘elusive’, but very large Rainbow and Brown trout. I willdiscuss my motivation for traveling to New Zealand, our travel and lodging, highlights, fishingresults and recommendations for a successful trip.

As we were reminded by multiple Kiwi’s (the native population, not the bird), Rainbow and Browntrout are an introduced/invasive species and should be eliminated. Unfortunately, we did little todecrease the population so I would suggest more skilled flyfishers are needed to continue thequest!

O' Neill Forebay Striper Trip – November 19-21, 2017Mark Shelton

Leader: Mark Shelton (459-7863; [email protected])

What: Fishing for mostly schoolie, some larger striped bass, with the occasional largemouth orsmallmouth bass thrown in. The lake record striper is 59 lbs., so you never know!

How: Float tubes, pontoon boats, kayaks, wading, power boats all work. Stripping streamers likeclousers, Lee Haskin’s San Luis smelt, zonkers, deceivers, and flashtail whistlers on I-lines orsink-tip/full-sink lines works best. Topwateraction can occasionally be good in low light(poppers, gurglers, etc.). Rod/line size 6-8 isbest, but lighter and heavier gear works.Stripers aren't leader shy, so 5 or so feet of

(5 SLFF NEWSLETTER – September 2017

12lb. mono leader is good. I use fluoro, but doubt it matters. The forebay ranger stationopens at sunrise, usually about 6:30 a.m. in fall. Wind can be bad, so you need to plan forit. There are flats on the west and south end of O'Neill that are easily waded and can holdquite a few stripers.

Where: Just west of I-5 by Santa Nella, 3 hours north of SLO.

Lodging: Some folks like to camp at the lake (Medeiros area is popular); most stay in Motel 6 verynear the forebay (I've found it surprisingly clean in previous stays). Motel 6 SantaNella/Los Banos: 28821 Gonzaga Rd., 3 miles west of I-5. Ph. (209) 827-8700.

When: I'll head up Sunday and fish Monday and Tuesday, returning home that eve.

Bonus: We meet for our traditional Basquedinner at Wool Grower'sRestaurant, 609 H. St., Los Banos, about 10 miles east of thereservoir. Plan to be there by 6:00p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19 for a greatfamily-style dinner with red wineand dessert. The dinner is almostworth the trip in itself.

EASTERN SIERRA OUTING REPORTMadeline & George Protsman

It was a great day for all the members of the SLFFC.

We had ten members in Pat Jaeger's class learning to fly fish as well as some new techniques. Classwas streamside on the Upper Owens River so attendees got to get in the water and use what theyhad learned, some for the first time to feel the excitement of the hook up.

SLFFC Class Members: Sylvia Leichter, Robert & Belinda Benassi, Kevin Rayner, Charlotte Kelly,Larry Dellard, Antony Bozanno, Logan Hunter (Anthony's friend), Madeleine Protsman & Kevin Shaw,

With the help of Lew, Madeleine, Ron Bryant, & George all enjoyed the experience of learning andthen getting on the Owens to make a catch. Most did manage to hook and land a fish or two.

There are so many ways to fish this great river but Pat covered them all. Cost for the day was $45per person, a great value.

Hope we have member interest to do more of the same next year.

It was nice to have Bob Hartzell, Janet Rayner & Cindy Dellard to join up for a SLFFC group dinnerat Whiskey Creek restaurant.

If you are new to the angler experience, this area from Bridgeport to Lone Pine has over 50+quality angling locations. If it wasn't for the haze from the fires the fall colors in the Sierra werespectacular.

Thanks to all that made the Bishop SLFFC outing a fun experience.

October’s Fly Tying Session

Featured Jim’s Ant and Ladybug CreationsThe last fly tying session was held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo

on Tuesday, October 24th at 6:30. Jim Snodgrass demonstrated how to tie his

Ant and Ladybug creations. Jim listens, reads, and watches videos of other

fly tiers. From all these sources, he came up with his very own ant and

ladybug that are sure to tempt the wily fish.

Jim has fished the Burney Creek and Burney Falls

area for a number of years with varying degrees of success. This year,

he tried his ant and ladybug creations on the Tenkara rod above Burney

Falls. Jim used the nymphing method of fishing with his Tenkara rod. He

caught approximately twenty Brook Trout and Rainbow Trout by tempting

the fish with his ants and ladybugs. Jim says these flies should be a

staple in your fly box.
