Claremont and Swan Districts will be the feature act when they play at the new Sounness Park football oval in Mount Barker this weekend. The oval is part of the multi-million dollar redevelopment of the Sounness Park Sporting Precinct that will be officially

unveiled this Saturday, May 9. The redevelopment project was delivered in conjunction with the Department of Sport and Recreation, Lotterywest and Shire of Plantagenet. It is a general bye in the Great Southern Football League this weekend to give clubs and players a chance to attend. Claremont listed players Beau Maister, Darcy Cameron, Steven Edwards, Matt Palfrey, Ben Higgs, Jack McPhee, Peter Mark and Ben Hitchcock hail from the Great Southern area.

Tigers Chief Executive Officer Dean Horsington said when presented with an opportunity to play this game, the club jumped at the opportunity. “The organisation of this game has all happened very quickly but we are excited to be playing another game in our country zone, this time Mount Barker,” he said. “This game wouldn’t be going ahead if it wasn’t for the exceptional organisation and strong support from the Department of Sport & Recreation, the Shire of Plantagenet, the WAFC, the Great Southern Football League and the Mount Barker Bulls Football Club. “In mid-February I proposed this opportunity to a committee of about 15 people at short notice and since then Joe Burton (GSFL President) and Rob Stewart (CEO Shire of Plantagenet) have led the charge and prepared the oval to the point where we haven’t had to do too much from our end. “I can honestly say not too many country regions would have organised this game so quickly with the professionalism the Great Southern has shown.

IT’S OK TO TALKThat is the message to all footballers and the community this weekend as part of the WAFL’s One Life Round.

Football is being used as an integral vehicle this weekend to help reduce the stigma associated with discussions around suicide.Every year suicide accounts for 32 percent of deaths among males aged 15-24. It’s a sobering thought that when you look through a WAFL team list many of the players sit in that age bracket.

It’s not just the men either, there has been a recent spike in suicide among young females.

About 45 percent of people will also struggle with some sort of mental illness throughout their lifetime.

Blue arm bands are being provided to players, coaches and officials as a way of raising awareness about mental

health and to help encourage discussion about the meaning of the arm bands throughout the weekend and beyond.

As part of their education plan about mental health, Live Life Ambassador training sessions are being conducted.

These sessions help equip Live Life Ambassadors with the knowledge to be able to recognise if someone is showing signs of mental health issues, how to properly approach them and where to best direct them for help.

There was a session on May 4, however there are still two training sessions available. To attend one of the remaining sessions – on May 25 at HBF Arena, Joondalup (6-8pm) or on June 15 at Anniversary Park, Rockingham (6-8pm) To book into one of these sessions head to www.wafootball.com.au or for more information contact Josh Bowler at the WAFC on [email protected] or (08)9381 5599. The training of an Ambassador contributes to clubs achieving Silver and Gold Status in the Swisse Quality Club Program.

Over the past three years, the WAFC’s partnership with One Life has also included:• AYouthLeadershipProgramtoensurefootballleadershavean

understanding of youth suicide and suicidal behaviour.• Equipping coacheswith the knowledge to recommendhelp

for players if required.• Promotionofsuicideeducationandpreventiontothefootball

fraternity at a range of high-profile and community based events.

• A suicide education and prevention presentation to WAFCstaff and associated groups including Executives and Commissioners.

“And we are rapt to be part of a unique game where the Mount Barker community will unveil their new facility at Sounness Park.” Ironically it was in May 91 years ago that the first football game was played at the site of the redevelopment. This will be the third WAFL game in the Great Southern Region and the first for six years, following the clash between the Tigers and South Fremantle at Collingwood Park in April 2009. Prior to that the Tigers and the Bulldogs played at McLean Park in Denmark. Construction of the new facility started in early and 2013 colours throughout the buildings were designed to reflect local sporting team colours.

It’s been quite some time since I found a WAFL club pennant that I hadn’t previously seen. As regular readers would know, pennants were popular from the 1950s through to the 1970s and were released by several different makers during this period. All are tough to find, but I particularly like those that came out on grand final day each year from about 1961, featuring each of the grand final teams. Recently, though, I was shown a pennant that was produced for an Eastern States tour undertaken by South Fremantle in 1954 and I reckon it’s a beauty. I had not previously seen a tour pennant and this one is particularly attractive, in bright red and white. The owner’s parents travelled to Melbourne with the team and were in the crowd when the Southerners defeated South Australia’s 2nd XVIII in Adelaide and again when they knocked off Collingwood in Melbourne. The pennant came back with them and sat in a cupboard until recently. Another pennant that I recently saw was related to South’s cross-town rivals and their bid to win the 1974 premiership. Some bright spark came up with the slogan “24 in 74” in a bid to urge Old Easts on to their 24th flag that season. The pennant was on the wall in one collector’s home and would be sought after by collectors of East Fremantle memorabilia. I have only seen one other and it hangs in the historical display at the club. Has anyone seen any other interesting pennants recently?

Late last season, I asked Football Budget readers to help me to find any sets of crockery that have been produced with WAFL club logos on them. At the time, I knew of only two sets. The best-known of these was the large set that was used by East Fremantle in its club function room from about the mid-1970s.

Made by Bristile, it consisted of seven separate pieces – three plates, a cup, a saucer and two bowls. All pieces bore the Old Easts logo and, I believe, there were hundreds of them around when the club took them out of service. I know several buyers who are keen on locating any of the seven pieces. The second set consisted of three pieces – a cup, a saucer and a plate. These had a 1970-style Claremont logo on them. But Ben, of Bassendean, recently came through with a photograph of a new piece of crockery featuring a Swans logo. He believes these dinner plates were used at Bassendean Oval in the 1970s. So, that’s three clubs that had their own crockery. Has anyone ever seen a Subiaco dinner plate, an East Perth cup and saucer, or a South Fremantle dessert bowl? The 1980s drinking glasses are perennial favourites among collectors and I am often asked how much they are worth. I’m not talking here about one-off glasses that were made for the clubs to celebrate some sort of milestone. The glasses I am talking about were mass-produced and were sold in shops during the period from about 1982-1985. Over the years, I have identified six separate sets of them. Given each set features the logos of all eight traditional WAFL clubs, and there are two different West Perth versions in one set, there are actually 49 different glasses to collect. Most collectors are only interested in finding the six glasses featuring their club (or seven for West Perth), but there are a few collectors chasing all 49. And this is where things get difficult because they can be quite difficult to find. The most common glasses feature the “w-style” logos that the clubs used in the late 70s and early 80s. Thousands of these glasses were made and,

as a result, they don’t carry too much value. Most serious collectors will have them all. But the other sets are an entirely different matter. Firstly, there is a set of pint glasses that bear the same logos as the tumblers. These turn up far less often and have a gold rim at the top which is often damaged. To give you some idea of how difficult it is to find these pint glasses, I only have five of them and the gold rims are damaged on three of them. I am missing Claremont, Subiaco and West Perth. Then, there is a set of tumblers and a set of matching pint glasses that feature cartoon-style logos from about 1983. These turn up rarely. I have only one of each, both for Swan Districts. Finally, there are matching sets of tumblers and beer mugs from about the mid-80s that feature the club logos within a circle. These are also difficult to find. I have two mugs (East Perth and Subiaco) and one tumbler (Subiaco). All of this should serve to inform you that the glasses (the 1982 tumblers aside) carry some decent value, especially those depicting the more popular clubs. I generally put a value of about $40 on each of the glasses (except the 1982 tumblers), though some have sold for more and some for less, on occasion. But $320 isn’t bad for a set of eight glasses from the 1980s.

UNFRIENDED (Universal Films)Ushering in a new era of horror, Universal Pictures’ Unfriended unfolds over a teenager’s computer screen as she and her friends are stalked by an unseen figure who seeks vengeance for a shaming video that led a vicious bully to kill herself a year earlier. After Universal executives saw a test screening of Unfriended terrify a test audience, the studio acquired the thriller that was developed and conceived by visionary filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter).

Directed by Levan Gabriadze, Unfriended is written by Nelson Greaves and produced by Bekmambetov and Greaves, as well as Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions (Ouija and Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Insidious series). Unfriended is in cinemas now.

The treasured and much loved film The Sound of Music will once again proudly shine on the big screen in celebration of this special anniversary. A beautifully restored digital version of the film will be shown on Mother’s Day – Sunday, May 10 in WA at the following cinemas -- Hoyts Carousel, Event Innaloo, Reading Belmont, Ace Midland, Ace

Rockingham, United Rockingham and Carnarvon. A phenomenon upon it debut in 1965, The Sound of Music’s spectacular ‘roadshow’ release spanned over two years in cinemas, inspiring audiences on the way to winning the Best Picture Oscar as well as millions of fans spanning multiple generations.

EAST FREMANTLE v PERTHA warning for the legion from Lathlain Oval. East Fremantle is building solid WAFL momentum that looks like finals form. The Sharks have won three on the trot and it has been the input across the board that would have pleased coach Steve Malaxos. Sure, the regular stars have been impressive. But the efforts of Cameron Eardley, Jack Perham in attack, Boston Williamson across half back and Sam Read are helping East Fremantle’s rise up the premiership table. RobYoungandJamesBristowcontinue to be serviceable in the ruck where their big bodies might pose an issue for an undermanned Perth following division. The Demons have put their faith in former East Perth player Blake Borrett to carry the following brigade in his opening two WAFL matches. Chris Billings gives Perth some bite in defence but it will be up to Dene White, Aidan Tropiano and Jared Bell further up the field to limit the amount of times the Demons backline is under pressure. Jamie McNamara is due to

play his 100th match for East Fremantle.

WEST PERTH v EAST PERTHIt isn’t silly for this clash to decide each other’s finals aspirations. And wouldn’t one love to be responsible for its rival’s misfortune. Only East Perth’s considerable percentage (120.7 per cent to 104.6 per cent) separates the teams on the ladder. West Perth could be on the look-out for more height to counter a Royals line-up with plenty of tall talent. But, more than that, the Falcons need Jay can Berlo, Matt Guadagnin and Shane Nelson to inspire their team through midfield. East Perth coach Brian Dawson lamented his team’s attitude in the loss to South Fremantle last week. One who couldn’t be criticised was Tom Barrass, who continues to shine in defence and will be a headache for West Perth to counter.

CLAREMONT v SWAN DISTRICTSThe drought is over. And Claremont coach Michael Broadbridge will be hoping to open the flood gates after his team’s breakthrough win for WAFL 2015. It was almost the Tigers of old. Claremont is stronger at the stoppages with Mark Seaby and Mitch Andrews working in partnership and Ian Richardson added some spice to the attack after a year away. There is no doubting the potential of the Tigers midfield to be damaging and Ryan Neates, CoreyYeoandTomLedgerprovedsuch in the victory over West Perth. Swans are wounded. A raft of senior players missed the valiant win over Peel last round. But the black and whites have better depth with Steven Wityk, Simon Donovan and Warrick Wilson making the most of their opportunities.

PEEL v SUBIACOJacob Ballard looms as the player capable of picking up Peel from its stumble in the previous round. Ballard has been the Thunder’s most industrious performer, averaging 24 touches. Not only does it help Peel but it doesn’t harm his chances of pushing for elevation to Fremantle’s AFL line-up when needed. The Thunder had trouble controlling the ball against Swan Districts. It is unlikely Brendon Jones, Connor Blakely and Hayden Crozier will have such problems two weeks in succession. But Subiaco isn’t the league leader by fluke. Clancy Wheeler’s ability to drive the ball into the Lions forward line is one of their strengths. Veteran Darren Rumble

marshals a tight back line that has conceded just

386 points in 2015. The next most miserly team is East Perth at 430 but the Royals sit sixth.

Umpires secure places in Michael Ball Talent AcademyIn January 2015, 13 field umpires from around the State were given the opportunity to trial for inclusion in the Michael Ball WAFL Talent Academy. The Michael Ball WAFL Talent Academy, named in honour of the former WAFL and AFL umpire, is a squad of talented young field umpires in their first three years on the WAFL panel. The Talent Academy is led by head coach Paul Beckers, in his second year in the position, and new assistant coach Cameron Douglas, who has stepped up to the Talent Squad after two years as head coach of the WAAFL Field Umpire panel. Beckers said the Talent Academy was a fantastic opportunity for our developing umpires to receive specialised coaching. “The talented umpires are identified early and move through the umpire talent pathway, where they receive quality coaching,” he said. “When they arrive at WAFL, our coaching is more about fine tuning their skills and tailoring them for the fast and skilful WAFL competition.” The selection process includes putting umpires through trials at training sessions, coaching sessions, completing all fitness testing, attending the pre-season camp and umpiring preseason games. At the conclusion of this year’s trial process, all 13 umpires met the required benchmark and achieved a spot on the WAFL panel. Congratulations to the following umpires on their successful trial – Robert Corrigan, Cory Dugan, Cailin Gibson, Michael Hennessy, Shaun Kirk-Williams, Scott McCarthy, Brendon Grygorcewicz, Brayden Pollard, Gabby Simmonds, Oscar Wharton, Mark Holford, Tim Hale & Curt Miller.

Teachers become students at West Coast

» West Coast Eagle Matt Priddis speaks with Dion Farr from Mundaring Christian College

MORE than 30 teachers from schools around WA got to experience a day in the life of the West Coast Eagles as part of an AFL Teachers Professional Development day On Tuesday, March 10.

The session, co-ordinated by the West Australian Football Commission, ran throughout the afternoon and involved both primary and secondary school teachers having a meet and greet with players, being taken for some practical skills and touring the West Coast Eagles facility. The teachers had the chance to sit down and discuss their thoughts around football programs within schools, brainstorming what would be great to implement and also reflecting on current programs. Baldivis Senior High School teacher Emily Sharp said the day was a good opportunity to meet the West Coast players, receive some valuable input and look at the Domain Stadium facilities. “The information from the WAFC education team and the West Coast Eagles Community team was really interesting,” she said. With 2015 well into gear and football lifting off, visit the www.wafootball.com.au website and see the schools tab for some great programs and competitions for schools. Alternatively, contact WAFC Education Manager Sharon Wilson on [email protected] or find your district staff representative to see what is on offer for schools.

Did you KnowSouth Fremantle’s Ashton Hams set a new season 2015 record last weekend when he was awarded eight free kicks in the Bulldogs win over East Perth. It’s the highest number of free kicks given to a player so far this season.

Big year for Amateur State football

By sophie James

Round 4 A Grade Results:West Coast 15.10 (100) defeated North Beach 2.12 (24)Mt Lawley 10.9 (69) defeated by Wesley Curtin 12.9 (81)Kalamunda 6.10 (46) defeated by Fremantle CBC 12.8 (80)University 12.7 (79) defeated Trinity Aquinas 7.7 (49)Kelmscott 13.12 (90) defeated North Fremantle 10.4 (64)

This is a big year in State representative football as amateur players from across Australia travel to Hobart in July for the Australian Amateur Football Council Carnival. In a tradition dating back to 1936, Western Australia will join teams from South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania in an attempt to win the title of best Amateur State team in Australia. Although previously scheduled for 2014, this year’s Carnival was delayed to coincide with Tasmania who will celebrate 150 years of Football in Tasmania this year. The last time WA travelled to Tasmania was in 2008 to compete in the AAFC Champion Matches Triennial Series 2008–2010. Having finished second in the 2008-2011 Triennial Series after defeating Tasmania and Victoria but suffering a narrow loss to South Australia in their final game, WA will be looking to go one better this Carnival. This year’s West Coast Eagles 23s program will run for eight weeks, from May to July, with the first game being played on home soil against the WA Country Football League on June 19. Having been overrun by the WACFL in last year’s opening game, the West Coast Eagles 23s will be looking to have a strong campaign opener with Wayne Langborne back in the senior coaching position. On July 1 the team will travel to Hobart to take on all competing States in a round-robin format.

The West Coast Eagles 23s State training sessions start on Wednesday, May 13 at City Beach Oval in City Beach from 6.15pm. Kulin-Kondinin thrashed Corrigin by 131 points to continue its early dominance of the Eastern Districts Football League season. Former Avon player Chris Maguire booted 12 goals for the winners in a dominant display. Jarrod West and Andrew Repacholi were also solid contributors, while David Crossland battled for the losers. In another one-sided match, Narembeen thumped Southern Cross by 97 points in an impressive display. Ryan Davis was good with five goals, while David Mortimer and Michael Bell were named best for Narembeen. Mathew Goes tried hard to lift Southern Cross with Sam Goodhill also in good touch. Bruce Rock notched its second win of the season with a comfortable 45-point win over Burracoppin. Cody Nelson led the way for Bruce Rock kicking five goals, while Oliver Sapsford and Tim Blechynden also played well. Mathew Southall and Aidan Tucker stood out for Burracoppin. In the closest match of the round Nukarni downed premiers Hyden-Karlgarin by 28 points with Brandon Giles and Ryan Meldrum providing good service, while Kelly James was good for the losers.

Can You Help?Since the beginning of the 1970 WAFL season there have been 4162 league debutants at an average of 93 new players per season. The WAFL player database is missing a date of birth for only 23 of these players but the birth place and junior/previous club is not recorded for a further 240 players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records of eight players for whom information is sought. These include:Shane Stewart CUMMING (East Perth 1989, 3 games) Steven Thomas FINCH (Claremont 1984, 3 games) Alan William GRIFFITHS (Swan Districts 1974-76, 17 games) Terence Patrick O’KEEFE (Claremont 1977, 6 games) Lloyd Andrew PAGE (Subiaco 1974-76, 38 games) David ROSS (West Perth 1989, 13 games) Tony STRANO (West Perth 1993, 2 games) Francis Brian WOOLLEy (Claremont 1975, 6 games)

Any information that could help establish contact with, or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]) or Judy Chalmers (9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
