HOUSTON-The Texas Southern Tigers

Football team dropped a 70-14 decision to

the University of Houston Cougars in a

game that marked only the second meet-

ing between the two institutions.

UH took a 49-0 lead at the 12:38 mark of

the third quarter before the Tigers put their

first points on the board with a 1-yard Terio

Brown touchdown. Brown's score was set-

up by a 44-yard touchdown reception from

Tariq Buchanan which got TSU inside the

Cougars' red zone.

Houston would subsequently add two more

scores before the Tigers got a spark off the

bench when quarterback Jay Christophe

entered the game and connected on a 95-

yard touchdown pass to Bobby Hartzog

which brought the score to 63-14 after a

successful Aaron Cuevas' extra point.

The 95-yard completion for a score tied a

ALCORN STATE 27, TSU 15

LORMAN, Miss.- The Texas Southern Ti-

gers Football team dropped a 27-15 road

decision to the Alcorn State Braves

at Spinks-Casem Stadium on Saturday.

After falling behind 27-0 in the first half of

play Texas Southern was able to hold the

Braves scoreless in the second half but the

Tigers weren't able to generate enough

offensive production to mount a comeback.

TSU scored 15 second half points as Bob-

by Hartzog hauled in two receiving touch-

downs of 23 and 16 yards respectively.

Alcorn State's scoring production was a

mixture of scores via the ground and pass-

ing attack as the Braves initially scored on

a 1-yard rush, followed by an 8-yard pass

in the first quarter.

The Braves added two more touchdowns

in the 2nd

quarter on another 1-yard run

and a 28-yard catch with 5:57 remaining

TEXAS ST. 36, TSU 20

SAN MARCOS, Texas- The Texas South-

ern Tigers lost their first game of the sea-

son on Saturday with a 36-20 decision ver-

sus the Texas State Bobcats but despite

the loss the team will take away several

positives from the contest.

After being held scoreless in the first half of

play TSU's offense came alive in the sec-

ond half scoring 20 points as quarterback

Jay Christophe settled in and found his

rhythm throwing for a total of 315 yards

and three touchdowns.

Wide receiver Tren'Davian Dickson had a

breakout performance for the Tigers as he

tallied 7 catches for 159 yards and two

touchdowns.

Christophe and Dickson combined for what

was arguably the games' most electrifying

offensive play of the night on a 75-yard

touchdown pass giving TSU its first score

of the night.

Defensively the Tigers flew around the field

at multiple positions as a total of four play-

ers finished the game with 10 tackles. Mat-

thew Stevenson, Julian Marcantel, Demon-

tario Anderson, and Marquis Walker all

helped set the tone for a physical unit that

only allowed two offensive touchdowns by

the Bobcats.

Texas Southern will travel to face the Al-

corn State Braves this weekend in what

will be the Tigers' second consecutive road

outing of the season.

TSU 26, UTPB 16

HOUSTON- The Texas Southern Tigers used a strong start in the first half to propel them to a 26-16 win over UT-Permian Ba-sin in their season opener at BBVA Com-pass Stadium. TSU quarterback Glen Cuiellette connect-ed with wide receiver Bobby Hartzog for a 39-yard touchdown strike to put the Tigers on the board first at the 9:34 mark of the first quarter bringing the score to 7-0. Texas Southern took a commanding 14-0 advantage when Cuiellette found Tren'Davian Dickson in the back of the end zone on a 15-yard touchdown catch at the 5:53 mark of the first quarter. The extra point attempt was blocked and returned for a score as the Tigers led 13-2.TSU would add three points on a 43-yard Aaron Cuevas field goal as time expired in the first half. The second half would bring about a much more competitive level of play as UTPB

sensing the game getting out of reach at-tempted to mount a comeback. After watching TSU take a 23-2 lead after a Bryston Cummings touchdown catch at the 2:58 mark of the third quarter the Fal-cons scored their first touchdown of the night early in the fourth quarter (14:51) on a 2-yard touchdown run by backup quarter-back Sam Allen. TSU would add another Cuevas field goal with 10:37 left to play in regulation. The Falcons would go on to score on a 64-yard touchdown pass from Allen to Ben Galaviz bringing the score to 26-16 with 8:58 re-maining which would subsequently be the games' final tally. For the game Texas Southern amassed 363 total yards offensively (128 R, 235 P), while UTPB gained 297 total yards (182 R, 115 P). Texas Southern University, one of the nation’s largest HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), possesses an impressive array of under-

graduate and graduate programs, a diverse faculty, 80-plus student organizations, and an alumni network comprised of educators, entrepreneurs,

public servants, lawyers, pilots, artists, and more, many of whom are change agents on the local, national and international stage. Nestled upon a

sprawling 150-acre campus, Texas Southern University has served as a cornerstone for developing the greatest potential in leaders from various so-

cio-economic, cultural, and racial backgrounds.

Texas Southern is located in the heart of the city, in Houston’s historic Third Ward, giving its students and faculty easy access to the Museum District,

neighboring educational institutions, the Texas Medical Center, City Hall, downtown Houston venues, and all of the city’s major freeways.

More than 8,500 students, along with nearly 1,500 faculty and staff comprise the University’s community, and like its curricula, the student body is

characterized by diversity. While many of the undergraduate and graduate students enrolled are native Texans, the student and faculty population is

represented by almost every state in the country, including the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, and by more than 50 nations.

Texas Southern University is home to nine schools and colleges and many have programs unique to the area and several have received national

recognition for their outstanding performance. Texas Southern offers the only Urban Planning degree in the area and has one of only two flight simula-

tors in the nation to support its airway sciences program. A new degree in entertainment management uses a state of the art sound studio as a labor-

atory for students learning both the technology and management needed for the Entertainment industry.

The Thurgood Marshall School of Law was named the most diverse law school in the nation three consecutive years by U.S. News and World Report.

In addition, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (COPHS) has historically produced over 27 percent of all the African American pharmacists

in the nation. Also, the majority of African-American teachers in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) as well as African-American lawyers

in Houston are Texas Southern University graduates.

Texas Southern participates in numerous programs, partnerships and collaborations designed to not only strengthen the overall collegiate experience,

but meet critical social needs. From the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Preparation Program (LSAMP), which increases the number of students

receiving bachelor’s degrees in critical STEM (science, mathematics, engineering, and technology) disciplines, to the NASA Research Center for Bio-

technology and Environmental Health, and more, Texas Southern is home to many cutting-edge opportunities.

With one of the most diverse faculties in the nation; state-of-the-art facilities; extra-curricular activities led by the university’s legendary Debate Team

and award-winning Ocean of Soul Marching Band and jazz ensemble; and exciting programs and initiatives, such as the U.S. government’s designa-

tion of Texas Southern University as a National Transportation Security Center of Excellence (NTSCE), one of only six nationwide, opportunities

abound for students at TSU NOW!

Head Coach Michael Haywood

Texas Southern University introduced Michael Haywood as the next head football coach of the Ti-gers football program on Dec. 4, 2015. During his coaching career Haywood has worked on the coaching staffs with some of college football's greatest mentors. Haywood has established himself as a coach with the ability to turnaround football programs as evi-dent with the success he enjoyed at his last coaching stop Miami (Ohio). It took Haywood just two seasons to turn the Redhawks into a championship program. After going 1-11 in his first season, Haywood led the Redhawks to an 8-4 record in his second sea-son and a MAC East title. The Redhawks then emerged victorious in the 2010 MAC Championship Game against Northern Illinois University, winning by a final score of 26–21. He was named the 2010 Mid-American Conference football Coach of the Year. Prior to joining the Redhawks Haywood spent the four previous years as offensive coordinator at

Notre Dame (2005-08). In Haywood's first season at Miami, the 2009 RedHawks posted a 1-11 overall record. However, an exceptional recruiting class and a group of solid transfers had Miami's prospects for success headed upwards. The RedHawks averaged 343.5 yards per game, including 273 passing yards per contest in his debut campaign. Since 1995, Haywood has been associated with three Top Ten teams and six other Top 25 clubs. His mentors have included former FBS Coaches of the Year Nick Saban, Mack Brown, Charlie Weis and Lou Holtz. Through Haywood's four seasons as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Notre Dame (2005-08), the Fighting Irish aver-aged nearly 27 points per game. He took over the majority of Notre Dame's offensive play calling in 2008 and the result was an additional 103 yards per game over the previous season. Haywood has coached running backs since 1994 at four different schools and tutored rushers that received All-America and All-Conference accolades. He helped develop the talent in players that etched their name in their respective school's records book and produced future National Football League players in Darius Walker, Cedric Benson, LaBrandon Toefield, Domanick Davis, Kevin Faulk, Rondell Mealey and Cecil Collins. A key figure in Notre Dame's offensive explosion in 2005, Haywood was named NCAA Division I-A Assistant Coach of the Year that season by the American Football Coaches Association. The honor recognized not only Haywood's outstanding coaching credentials, but also his stellar work in the community throughout his coaching career. Haywood's return to familiar turf in South Bend was the latest stop in a successful career as one of college football's top assistant coaches for the past 22 years. A four-year football letterman at Notre Dame (1982, 1984-86), Haywood has been a collegiate coach for a total of 23 years. He joined Weis's staff following two years at Texas under Brown. Prior to that, he was running backs coach at LSU for coaches Gerry DiNardo and Saban. Haywood is no stranger to the Southwestern Athletics Conference, as his mother attended Texas Southern University. Haywood has coached every position and has coordinated offense, special teams and recruiting. He has recruited the Midwest as well as Florida, Texas, Louisiana, California, Canada, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Born Michael Anthony Haywood on Feb. 26, 1964, in Houston, Texas, he played flanker during his freshman season at Notre Dame (started five games and caught 13 passes for 128 yards in 1982), then moved to cornerback where he was a significant contributor and starter from 1984-86 (13 career starts, 78 tackles, five interceptions, two blocked kicks). Recruited by Gerry Faust, Notre Dame's coach during Haywood's senior year was Lou Holtz. Haywood is a 1986 graduate of Notre Dame with a bachelor's degree from the College of Arts and Letters. He has one child, a son Michael Christopher.
