Rd 4 vs Rye: In perfect sunny weather and played in front of 4,000 plus spectators the Gooversus Rye turned out to be quite the day for club.

After what could only be described as a slow start, the within 11 points at half time against a very much improved Rye outfit.The second half turned into a real arm wrestle with both sides not giving an inch. With fitness playing a part, we were able to respond strongly in the last quarter running out 23 point winners in a quality contest all day. players on the day were Shaun Clarke, Ben Holmes

Rd 1 vs Somerville: Travelling away to Somerville for our first road game was to be a genuine challenge against a side that we consider a finals contender.

After another sluggish start that saw the home side kick four of the first five goals, going into quarter time there was some need for adjustment. To the boys’ credit, in the second and third quarter we were able to reel off 12 goals in a row and put together some really exciting football for the last three quarters.

In the end we ran out 57 point winners in a really acknowledgement that we need to iron out our slow starts as a top priority. The best players on the day were Jay Hutchinson, Billy Quigley Shaun Clarke.

Rd 2 vs Devon Meadows by Dan Geurts (due to Rikki’s absence with illness) Round 2 brought us up against Devon Meadows away. Playing the Panthers on their home deck is always aphysical match & the weekend proved to be no different.

After the reserves had to endure some of the worst conditions possible, the rain had stopped and the wind had steadied by the first bounce of the senior game. After slow starts in the first two games (giving away five goals to both Rye and then Somerville), our major focus was putting a score on the board early. Some classy midfield work allowed first 30 seconds of the game. Two first quarter goals by which, a freaky left foot ninja kick hacked out of mida two goal lead into the first break. Being two goals ahead didn’t reflect the dominant quarter as we gave away two 50m penalties directly resulting in Devon goals.

The weather turned back to rubbish in the second quarter and for thepart it was a back and forth arm wrestle. First gamer poise as he and his brother Josh found plenty of the football. Some inaccurate kicking by Devon allowed us to hold a 15 point lead at the main break 7.3.45 v 4.6.30.

The third quarter belonged to Devon as some more undisciplined acts handed them easy goals. It was a scrappy quarter as the rain pelted down. We held on to an eight point lead going into the last.

The weather cleared as we kicked into the breeze in the final boys rallied as the skipper, Terry Wheeler, showed outstanding leadership early in the last. He booted the first goal & the midfield. in Rye. Our boys let themselves down in a few areas with average kicking (missing target) and minimal run from behind. The rule is simple, HANDS UP + SHUT UP TOWARDS UMPIRES. Rye was team and deserved the 4 points. This is a special history project for the club which attempts to record and publish the guernsey numbers of past and current Dromana footballers. Note: It was necessary, in this first stage of the research, to ‘draw a line’ at jumper number 40, simply because it was such a time consuming activity. However, Gary Ferguson has now done lengthy research on numbers 40 – 80. The following chart lists players who wore jumpers with numbers between 11 & 20. Ten will be printed in each edition of Tiger Talk.

CAN YOU HELP? While there are some 400 names of former players on the full list at the club website under the history section, it is fully appreciated that many players from our club’s history are not listed. Consequently…

• If your name is not listed and you wore a DFC jumper with a number between 1 & 40, please inform the club

so your name and jumper number can be published in a proposed booklet.

• If your jumper number at DFC was greater than 40, please inform the club; and such names will also be

collated and published at a further date.

• If a family member or friend (e.g. grandfather, father, uncle etc.) played with DFC and his name/number is not

CHAMPIONS OF THE BUSHPETER PIANTO - EAGLEHAWK-GEELONG

When Geelong’s star rover Pianto died in February hundreds of people gathered atMary’s of the Angels Basilica in Geelong to farewell their football

hero. Very few players had left such a mark on thCity of Geelong as Peter Pianto had done inyears as a player and coach of the Cats.

Peter (born 1929), one of twelve childrenplaying football for Eaglehawk Football Club teenager. Eaglehawk Football Club (Bendigo FLwas formed in 1880 and since then, more than forty local players have graduated to VFL/AFL ranks including such well-known names as Rod Ashman, Alf Baud, Charlie Clymo, Des English, Ted Esposito, Bill Evely, Jarryn Geary, Ted Jinks, Damian Lockand Doug Palmer.

Peter Pianto made his senior debut for Eaglehawk in 1947 and quickly ‘won his spurs.’ He polled well in local awards in 1950 and after much press speculation; Peter agreed to sign with the CatsPeter made his VFL debut in Round 1 1951 against North Melbourne, at the Arden Street Groundhe starred in that game. ‘The Argus’ predicted with uncanny accuracy… “…was the brilliant debut of new recruit Peter Pianto (Geelong). He played more like a veteran. We will hear a lot of him before he is much older.” And the football world did!

Over the next six seasons, Peter rose to become the best rover in the VFL and won a list of awards and interstate honours. Renowned for his courage in the packs, blistering pace and intelligent crumbing around stoppages, Peter Pianto was a tireless and daring rover. As is well documented,starred in the Geelong premiership teams of 1951 and 1952.

After 121 games (144 goals), Peter shocked Geelong supporters and the football world accepted a coaching job in the country Victoria Coragulac FC (later combined with Colac) He also coached Claremont in the WAFL for three seasons but he was then lured back to GeelongColac (again), as coach in 1966. In an electrifying Grand Final against Richmond in 1967, the Cats missed winning the flag by ‘a whisker.’ Note: 109,396 people attended that epic match.

In addition to the Carji Greaves Trophy (Peter accomplishments included: RepresentingVictoria, selection in the All Australian Teamthe Italian Team of the Century, GFC Hall and he was named in the Geelong Team of Century. Peter Pianto was a ‘champion’ in the true sense of the word and his name will ‘live forever’ in the City of Geelong and at Canterbury Park in Eaglehawk.
