Entrepreneur & Alumna Jessica Jackley Visits NASH

On October 28, NASH welcomed back 1996 grad Jessica Jackley, co-founder of the world’s first peer-to-peer microlending website Kiva, which makes connections between small business owners in developing countries and lenders willing to loan as little as $25.

Jessica talked about how her career evolved by turning her passion into a purpose. After her presentation, students participated in a Q&A, asking her some insightful questions about her career and becoming an entrepreneur. They also had the chance to have a copy of Jessica’s book, Clay Water Brick, signed by her.

Channel 11 Weatherman Visits Peebles

On November 5, third graders at Peebles Elementary were treated to a visit from meteorologist Scott Harbaugh from WPXI’s Channel 11 News. Mr. Harbaugh, a North Allegh-eny alumnus, talked to the students about his job and how he forecasts the weather.

He later capped off the students’ recent lessons on weather by leading a quiz game and asking some pretty tough questions. But students were happy to showcase what they learned and impressed Mr. Harbaugh with their knowledge!

Senior Starts Tutors for Opportunity

Jessica Jackley’s visit came at an especially exciting time for NASH, which just implemented a program called Tutors for Op-portunity, co-founded by senior Siddarth Narayan.

Tutors for Opportunity, a non-profit network spanning across the United States and 8 other countries, offers tutoring ses-sions led by student volunteers. The money collected from these sessions is invested through Kiva and goes toward funding academic opportunities for stu-dents around the globe.

So far, Tutors for Opportunity at NASH has donated more than $1,300 to small businesses and entrepreneurs!

Tutors for Opportunity was recently featured in the Tribune-Review.Click here to read the article.
