Differentiation Arrangement/ am I a “low risk” national? Certain nationalities are considered, by the Home Office, to be “low risk” and eligible for the Home
Office “Differentiation Arrangement.” If you are a “low risk” national, you should answer “Yes” to the
question below.
Low risk nationals are not required to provide evidence of qualifications or financial evidence when
applying for a Tier 4 visa. However, the Home Office confirm that they may ask for this
evidence. If you are asked to provide this evidence you will have a very short time to provide
it. Failure to provide requested evidence will result in a visa refusal.
Therefore if you are a “low-risk” student, you must provide us with evidence of qualifications and
finances, so that we can check that you meet the requirements.
My dependants are in the UK, how do I apply for their visa?
If you have dependants in the UK (The Home Office consider dependants to be a partner (spouse/civil
partner/unmarried partner) or child) you can apply for their visas at the same time you apply for your visa.
You simply need to add your dependants to your Tier 4 online application, you do not need to complete a
separate form.
On the “All applicants” page and go to “Additional applicant” and select the dependant you want to add, then
click “Add this applicant.”
Add all your dependants then click “Answer questions about this applicant”
Page 15
International Student Support Team Updated 22/12/2017
The application for dependants is shorter and you should be able to answer all these questions without
difficulty.
Remember to confirm that you want to receive mail at a different address and use the same Advice
Centre address that is given above.
There is one question which you may find confusing:
“Does this dependant intend to stay in the UK beyond any period of leave the main applicant is granted”
This question is asking you if your dependant intends to remain in the UK after your visa expires, and
your answer should be “no”. If you are intending to apply for another visa in the UK (e.g. if you are
intending to do further study in the UK) and your dependant will also apply to extend their visa, this is
fine, and the answer is still “no”. If you are still unsure about how to answer this question, please email
[email protected] for advice.
Check your Application Once you have answered the question above you have reached the end of the application. Check all your
answers to make sure they are correct but DO NOT ANSWER ANY MORE QUESTIONS, until you have
given your supporting documents to ISST for checking.
Assistance from the International Student Support Team Once you have your CAS and you have prepared all your supporting documents, you can submit them
to the International Student Support Team (ISST) to be checked. Please print and complete our
Supporting Document Coversheet, which gives more instructions on submitting your documents. You
can then hand these into the Advice Centre (Level 1 McCance Building) and we will check them for you.
Once we have checked your supporting documents we will return them to you along with a guide to help
you submit and post your visa application.
What happens next? If you have made a postal application and you used our address, ISST should receive a letter for you
(normally after 2-4 weeks) asking you to go to the Post Office to have your biometrics taken (fingerprints
and digital photograph). We will email you to ask you to collect this.
After you go to the Post Office, your application will be processed by the Home Office.
The total visa application processing time is approximately 8 weeks; however, it may take longer during
busy periods.
Your new visa, passport and supporting documents will be returned to The International Student Support
Team when a visa decision has been made. We will contact you using your Strathclyde email address to
ask you to collect your documents. Please bring your student card with you.
If you have a Police Registration Certificate you should tell the police when you receive your new visa, as
they need to update your Certificate. Please remember to update any changes of address with the
police too.

When can I travel? Please do not make any travel arrangements/ book flights while you are waiting for your visa. We cannot
guarantee that you will have your passport in time for you to travel and you could lose money you have
paid for your travel.
