How to Match Your Tie and Shirt

    Professionally

Matching your tie and shirt correctly is not that difficult, but essential. Try walking outthe door in the morning with a paisley shirt and a Striped Tie, chances are youll hear a

lot of snickering and get some very pitying looks.

So what can you do to keep from looking like a sight impaired business professionalwithout a kind wife? Follow along with this simple guide and well tell you how to master

the pairing of the shirt and tie.

There are several guidelines to follow when picking out the right tie shirt combination inthe morning. Weve broken it down by shirt type for ease of reference.

    White Shirt

The white shirt is perhaps the easiest shirt to dress up. It goes with any color, or anyPattern Tie for that matter. The safest route to go when dressing in the morning is towear a white shirt with your tie, it will match no matter what.

Of course, some people dont like to play it safe all the time

    Solid Color Shirts

For a man looking for a little bit of excitement in his wardrobe a solid colored shirt is an

excellent idea. A colorful shirt can really add a depth to your appearance that a whiteshirt lacks.

The simple rule for matching a colored shirt to your tie is to match a contrasting color inthe tie to the color of the shirt. So say youre wearing a Blue Tie with pink strips, yourshirt should be pink. Also keep in mind that the colors of tie and shirt should match, but

you can use similar shades of the same color to create a really striking effect.

    Striped Shirts and Checked Shirts

Both of these patterned shirts can go really well with either solid or patterned ties. If youare going with a Solid Color Tie try matching the tie color to the color of the lines on the

shirt. This creates a striking visual effect without being overly matching.

You can also wear a patterned tie with a striped or checked shirt, just be sure that thepattern on the tie is always larger than the pattern on the shirt. The pattern on the shirt

should always be smaller and more subtle, because the tie is the decorative centerpieceof the outfit and that is where you want attention centered.

Also try to incorporate colors from the patterned shirt onto the patterned tie, forexample, reversing the contrasting and main colors in the shirt on the tie. An example ofthis would be a light blue shirt with small yellow strips matched with a yellow Dot Tie

    with blue dots.

All of these tie and shirt combinations are popular among professional men, especiallyfor the work day. The biggest concern for day wear is to keep your outfit conservativeand understated. I like patterns for day wear because they create an interesting visual

dynamic in a sometimes stale suit.

For nightwear try going bold with bright or jewel toned solid colors. This will create adramatic look that may not be appropriate for work, but looks outstanding at a party ordinner. For a classic combination with a twist, try a black suit, white shirt, and vivid redSilk Tie. You will look classy, powerful, and ready to take on the world.

Matching your tie and shirt is not difficult, even in the hazy mental fog of the earlymorning. If you forget some of the rules, print out this article and keep it in your closetas a handy guide for putting together a successful outfit. After all, youve invested all

this money in these beautiful clothes, why not wear them correctly?

    Tie Color

    The Meaning behind the Silk

Tie color is one of the best ways to convey your personality through fashion.

Whether you are aware of it or not, the color of your tie can influence the people aroundyou. So before tying that knot in the morning, consider what personality traits you areconveying through the color of your tie.

    Black Ties

The Black Tie is closely associated with very formal events. In fact, very fancy gatherings

or parties are often known as "black tie" events. You should truly save your black ties forthese special events.

But black can be used very effectively as a color in Patterned Ties, especially whencombined with white. Don't discount black as a tie color, just save the solids for specialoccasions.

If you are going into a meeting where you need to lead your business team to a hard-

won victory, Red is an excellent choice for a tie color. Try a solid colored, ruby red silktie for the ultimate power effect.

Oranges also fall into the same category, though they are an even bolder style choice.

    Blue Ties

Blue is a calming, soothing color which radiates peace and tranquility. If you are goinginto a hostile meeting with tense parties, then Blue is an excellent color choice.

But just because blue is peaceful, does not mean it is a weak color, it is persistent and

everlasting, like waves upon the shore.

Try mixing blue with red or yellow to add a power dynamic to the tie color scheme.

Yellow is a complex color. In the English language it has connotations of cowardice, indicated by terms like "yellow-bellied coward".

But yellow is also the color of the sun, representing its radiance and vitality. If you are

going to wear a Yellow Tie, make sure you have the personality to carry it off by beingoutgoing and forthright.

Yellow also mixes very well with blues and creates a striking effect in patterns andStripes.

As any businessman knows, the color of money is green! What better way to attractmoney to you than by wearing a Green Tie?

The color green is also seen as a symbol of rebirth and growth, and is a good way to

project yourself as a team player who is growing in knowledge and skills.

Be careful to avoid the negative connotations of green as a tie color however; youwouldn't want people to see you as "green with jealousy". Save that kind of energy forimproving yourself instead.

    Paisley

Paisley Tie pattern originally comes from Persia, where it was recognized as a fertilitysign. In the 60's it evolved into a design used by many hippies focused on free love andpeace.

The tear-drop shape makes a lovely tie design, but judge your workplace before wearingit to the office. As mentioned earlier, the design is most strongly associated with hippies, and in very conservative workplaces this would be considered a bad thing. Have an

    open-minded office? Go for it!
