www.stamfordresidents.org Tidy Roads Recycling Waste Planning Committee Tree Advisery Board Epsom Common Association Chair’s Report Dear Residents. As I write this, the death toll from Covid-19 in the UK has topped 30,000. The virulence of the infection and its indiscriminate attack on rich and poor, old and young alike shows that we are indeed “all in this together”. I have tried to stick to government advice, especially in regard to social distancing, when I am walking through all the many wonderful green spaces in the Ward or queuing up both outside and inside supermarkets. I take my hat off to virtually all of the good folk of Epsom, who have also observed the rules to keep their distance. I believe that the vast majority of us fully understands the need to avoid unnecessary risks in this strangest and most perilous of times: we do not need police officers to keep us apart! But, there will always be those, a tiny minority no doubt, who do not seem to comprehend the risks they are heedlessly taking in meeting up with friends or relations in open spaces or each other’s homes or who do not properly apply social distancing when walking, running or cycling through the many green areas in the Borough. To these people, I would make the following appeal. We all want this lockdown to end and to end soon, so we must all ensure that we abide by the simple, if stark, injunctions of the government. With the rate of infection and consequent deaths from the Coronavirus now slowing down if not actually de- creasing both in neighbouring countries such as Italy, Spain and France and in the UK, we too in Britain can at last see the beginning of the end of the epidemic. So it is beholden upon all of us to continue to show the admirable restraint, which I have been privileged to witness, and to resist the temptation in all this fine weather to flout the rules, that can only delay the return to the normality for which we all yearn. The SWRA committee decided to create your Spring Newsletter as an electronic version to keep our residents informed about what is going on within Stamford Ward and around the Borough, as it is not possible at present to deliver printed copies through the letter box. What is good is that all the links are live and will take you to the dedicated page(s) so no more typing in long web addresses! If you would like to receive updates and the newsletter by email in future and not having to wait for it to be delivered then please email: [email protected] ’SWRA is collaborating with other RAs via the Standing Committee of Residents Associations (SCoRA) in co-ordinating community activities. Previously we learned about todayrsquos railways and what can go wrongwith them But when did Epsom join what became one of the busiestrail systems in the world The London to Croydon railway opened in1839 and was the start of the Main Line to Brighton A branch wasopened from West Croydon to Sutton and Epsom in 1847 having aterminus in Station Road later to become the Upper High Street Theoriginal building can still be seen behind the single-story shops At firstthere were 10 trains to London Bridge on weekdays and only 6 onSundays The second railway arrived from Waterloo and Wimbledon in1859 and went on to Leatherhead Their station was on the same site asthe present one Next a link was built from the Croydon line over theEast Street bridge through the centre of the new station but had no platforms for trains to stop In 1929 theSouthern Railway built a new lsquomodernrsquo station in the middle of the town the one that most of us can rememberand the Upper High Street station was closed The goods yard remained open for many years providing facilitiesfor coal and local goods traffic The rsquoFurnissrsquo family had a coal delivery business in Epsom and their headoffice was built in 1902 This is the building subject to a demolition order at the corner of West Street andStation Approach Coal was off loaded from railway wagons just behind the building A large granite blockwall is still visible today in the yard More railway history will follow in later newsletters

In 2013 the Council (EEBC) started collecting all plastics It was known that not every plastic itemcould be recycled but it comprised only about 2 of such waste collected at the time So theall plastics policy made sense because the simplicity of it encouraged people to recyclemore overallThen in 2018 China suddenly stopped accepting the large quantities of plastic waste that ithad been taking from Europe and elsewhere because it was being criticised by worldorganisations for excessive pollution of the atmosphere That had a huge impact on globalmarkets For example in 2016 China imported over seven million tonnes of plastic waste The exporters ofthe waste had to find new markets for this material and some plastics became uneconomic for the commercialcompanies that arrange the recycling Consequently it is hard for the Council to get plastics accepted for recyclingunless it is a bottle pot tub or tray All other items are removed from the conveyor belt and burned It is possible forthe Council to lose a full lorry load of recycling if a company thinks there is too much of the wrong waste in it Theprocess is costly and residents pay the bill so the Council reasons that it is now cheaper for residents if they are askedto sort their plastic and other waste at source and put it into the appropriate bins provided by the Council

Paper card steel and aluminium cans NO tinfoilPlastic bottles pots tubs and trays ONLY And not black plastic onesNO CARTONS NO PLASTIC BAGS NO OTHER PLASTICS LIKE FILM BUBBLE WRAP or POLYSTYRENENo glass no food no textilesNo biodegradable bags should go into either the green bin or the food waste caddy

Asrecycling is a global industry some of them are outside the UK The EEBC website shows where the recycling goes atpresent-Paper is currently made into new products in IndiaCardboard is made into new products at plants in India Vietnam and ThailandSteel cans are recycled in Doncaster and Scunthorpe Aluminium cans are recycled in Cheshire Swindon and SwanseaMost of the glass is recycled in Yorkshire And a small amount at plants in the West Midlands Derbyshire and CheshireThe different types of plastic get recycled in various places using a variety of processes For example plastic bottlespots tubs and trays are recycled in Lincolnshire North Yorkshire Essex or HollandFood waste is recycled in BedfordshireGarden waste is composted in various places notably at a large organic farm and vineyard near Overton Hampshire

Overall no it has not - according to the Council Certainlythe benefit of some plastics recycling has gone but residents of the Borough are recycling more and more items orvarious kinds and our performance has continued to improve We now recycle 55 and that is well above the nationalaverageFor more information see the EEBC website at httpswwwepsom-ewellgovuk gt waste amp recycling
