The stranger that sojourneth with you shall be unto you as the home-born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the

Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. (Romans 12:13 )

Dear Friends,

As I read the news about the current crisis of refugees seeking relief

and shelter, I remember teachings from the Bible that shape our attitude

toward those who are fleeing their homes.

The Bible gives little or no help on just how we go about giving aid and

support. The Bible also makes no reference to the ungodly mess that has

caused this massive disruption of our neighbors. The central Word of our

faith simply says: care about them as you care about yourself and your own

people. Look at each one and see Jesus’ own self.

Both of our denominations, the United Church of Christ and the United

Methodist Church, have been sending aid to partner organizations who are

working with displaced persons in Syria and refugee communities in

Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Armenia. Because of our continuing support

of our denominations, at a time of crisis like this every gift given is used

entirely for aid. If you wish to contribute to this

humanitarian mission, please write checks to the

church and indicate “Syrian relief” on the memo

line.

It is also good to pray. Prayers for divine intervention, prayers of support for those who are on the front lines of aid, prayers for an end to the conditions that have created so many refugees all over the world — those are all good prayers. Let your prayers also be a way of keeping your own self open to the heartache and longing of our sisters and brothers who are suffering.

We are close to Christ Jesus when we share suffering, and once again become people of compassion — a compassion that can actually transform pain, by God’s grace.

God’s richest blessings to you,

Pastor John A. Nelson

Get Ready for Worship!

Follow the “Preparing for Sunday” link on our website (NianticCommunityChurch.org). You will find the scripture readings for the current week, a brief description to set them in context, a reflection on the passages, and a prayer starter. It’s a great way to spend time with God’s Word — and since those passages are (often) the basis for services on Sunday morning, you’ll be adding a new layer of richness and meaning to the experience of worship.

Worship in October

NCC Welcomes Visitors – You’ve heard it

before—all are welcome at NCC. But what happens when a visitor pulls into the parking lot on a Sunday

morning and can’t find a parking place? Not so welcoming. Now we have a new way to convey our hospitality. Two Visitor Parking signs have been

installed near the front entrance of the church to let newcomers know we’re glad they’ve chosen to worship with us—even before they get out of their

cars. But we also recognize that parking is limited and can be a challenge on any given Sunday. So let’s agree that the visitor parking spots will be

reserved for visitors until the start of worship. After that, all are welcome to park there.

If anyone ever wants to convey a message, ask a question, or provide a suggestion to the Prudential Board you can do so by contacting Pastor John, the NCC Officers, or your Committee Representative. Another way is through our At-Large members, they serve as the congregation’s voice to the Prudential Board.

THINKING ABOUT JOINING NCC…

The next Considering Membership Session will be held Saturday, October 3rd from 9am-12pm. If you are thinking about becoming a member and would like to attend, call Patty Chaffee 739-6208 or email [email protected].

President’s Quarterly

Greetings, I hope everyone had a great summer and is

looking forward to an autumn full of exciting

opportunities and ministries here at NCC. While things

do slow down at NCC during the summer, they certainly

don’t shut down. We had two Traditional Suppers and a

Lobster Stew dinner, which were all very successful.

Thanks to everyone who participated in making these

events happen. On October 17th we will be holding a

Calendar Dinner. This is always great fun…be sure to

take part if you can.

Also this summer, the structural portion of the CPACE

project was completed. NCC now has energy efficient

lighting, new sanctuary windows, and a new roof with

solar panels over the multipurpose room and classrooms.

We are not producing solar energy yet, but everything is

in place to start. There is a hold up with the CPACE

program at the state level and our representatives from

Encon are working on getting us the “green light” to go

online.

The Prudential Board also approved a plan for a new

projection system and screen installation in the sanctuary.

This work is now underway. The long range projector

will be mounted above the doors in the back of the

sanctuary and a retractable screen will be mounted

between the choir loft and the cross. We are hoping that

this will be a welcomed enhancement to Sunday services

and other events. Earlier this year we learned that the

sound board used in the sanctuary was failing. We were

struggling to find funds until the Memorial Committee

stepped in offered to finance a new sound control system.

A BIG thank you goes out to that committee!

Finally, I want to talk about the formation of a

Technology Committee. I received a proposal from the

Communications Committee and the Music and Worship

Arts Committee to put together an ad hoc committee that

would consider creating a committee that would oversee

all aspects of technology at NCC. The Officers and

Prudential Board agreed and we are in the process of

forming the ad hoc committee. Anyone who might want

to join this committee, please contact Pastor John, myself,

or another church officer.

HISTORY QUIZ

In the month of October the Old Stone Church Burial

Ground Committee sponsors a clean-up of the cemetery

on Society Road. If you have never visited this place

on Society Rd. now is your chance to visit and learn

about those who are buried there.

There are over 750 burials and below are five names of

notable residents. Do you recognize any of them. If so

what do you know about them:

Thomas Lee (1672-1752), Sylvanus Griswold (1768-

1823), Moses Warren (1762-1835), Vine Utley (1768-

1836), Lydia Miller Lee (1807-1895)

News from Christian Education and Youth Minister

3rd Grader Bible Sunday October 4 All 3rd graders and families, join us for an annual tradition that Niantic Community Church has shared for decades as we give the gift of the book of our faith to each and every one of our 3rd grade children. Bible Sunday for 3rd Graders is Sunday, October 4 in the 9:00 AM service’s “Thought for Young Minds.” When Church School starts, we’ll be sure to get a group pic with their new Bibles. All-Youth Corn Maze Trip Oct. 18 Get ready to get lost on October 18 as all youth in grades 6-12 are welcome to come with us to Buttonwood Farm in Griswold for our annual trip to the corn maze and hayride! We’ll gather in the Multipurpose Room at 10:30, head for lunch at Subway near the farm and then enjoy the corn maze, cow train, straw bale mountain, corn pit and then top it all off with the farm’s famous ice cream before returning to NCC by 4:00 PM. Each youth will need $25-30 for lunch, admission and ice cream. Water cannon shots cost extra. Parents, we need drivers (and you can have fun, too!); if interested, contact Russ ASAP and let him know. Carving For a Cause Oct. 25 Each year our Middle School Church School carves Jack-o-lanterns for our homebound and other special church members as a mission for our community. Sunday, October 25, the Middle School Church School Class (grades 5-8) will have a ball doing just that. Come dressed for a mess and bring a favorite pumpkin pattern if you have one. Jr. Youth Fellowship will deliver the creations during fellowship time, 10:30am-noon. If you know of any NCC members who would enjoy a Jack-o-lantern for Halloween, please e-mail Russ with their name ([email protected]). Thanks!

BOOK CLUB

The Women's Fellowship Book Club has selected “A Fall of Marigolds" by Susan Meissner as their next book.

Part historical, part contemporary novel about two women having lost their loved ones trying to find out how to live on. A Fall of Marigolds is a dual narrative between two women, with the emphasis on the story of Clara in 1911. The two stories are loosely linked through a physical object, a scarf. Clara lost her crush of two weeks in a fire, and is left to wonder what would have been if he hadn’t died. Taryn lost her husband in the Twin Towers and has never told her daughter of what happened that day.

Please join in a fun discussion on October 18, 2015 at 7:00 pm. Any questions, contact Carol Donovan at [email protected].

Jewelry Donations for the Jack Frost Bazaar can be dropped off at the Church Office throughout the upcoming months. Any questions, contact Jeannette Woodworth, Laureen Pierandi-McCarthy, or Edie Watrous-Woody.

SPEAKING OF STEWARDSHIP The Stewardship Committee is pleased to announce that 4 members of NCC have agreed to share their stories - Speaking of Stewardship and what it means to them. They are Kim Kalajainen, Rich Thomson, Andrew Proud and Quin Selmeski.

We invite you to be present during the month of October during Sunday Services to hear their messages. We promise you that you will not be disappointed and will be Inspired. We ask you to reflect on these messages of stewardship and what NCC means to you as you consider your pledge to NCC for 2016. We ask that you turn in your pledge card during service Sunday Nov. 8th.

Thomas Lee was active in getting the East or Second

Society set apart from Lyme in 1719.

Sylvanus Griswold was a son of our first minister. His

house is still standing on East Society Rd.

Moses Warren was a local surveyor and also went and

surveyed the Western Reserve of CT (now Ohio) .

Vine Utley was a Doctor who worked on finding a

vaccine for small-pox.

Lydia Miller Lee was the wife of Orlando Lee. They

were very active in the church before moving to NY.

After his death in 1857 she returned and in 1876 donated

the land for a new Congregational Church building on

Lincoln St.

Trivia: Sylvanus and Moses, both left journals and in

them we find a picture of what the town and church was

like. Vine also left journals of all his patients in Lyme and

Waterford. In them we learn much about their health and

habits. If you go to the East Lyme Town Hall you will

find a display case in the lobby with the saddle bags

Moses used to surveying. Also in the lower conference

room you will find paintings of Lydia, Orlando and their

son Herman.
