Two requirements for waterfalls to occur are water and an elevation gradient. Numerous wa-terfalls are considered natural wonders and are sought out as vacation destinations. Height and water volume produce the most spectacular falls. Let’s explore a few.•NiagaraFalls isactuallyacollectionof three

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might not like some people’s idea of a sur-prise. But you could be in for a pleasant shock when someone finally sends a reply to a request you made so long ago that you almost forgot about it.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a time to expect the unexpected. So don’t be surprised if a decision that just recently seemed final suddenly opens up and leaves you with another chance to make an important choice.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a different tack on a work project might rankle some colleagues. But the posi-tive results of your innovative course soon speak for themselves. Celebrate with a fun-filled weekend.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Meeting new associates can be awkward, even if you’re in a high positive phase right now. Best advice: Make them feel comfortable, and you’ll soon forget your own discomfort.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a good time for you social Lions to blow-dry your manes, polish your claws and look like the Fabulous Felines you are as you make new friends and influence the influential.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expectations run especially high this week, and you should feel confident in your abilities to take advantage of what might be offered. A colleague has some advice you might find helpful.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A recent flurry of activity leaves you in need of a little breathing space, and you’d be wise to take it. Close family members should have an expla-nation about an emergency situation that just passed.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An insensitive act makes a difficult situa-tion more so. But try not to waste either your physical or emotional energies in anger. Move on and let others fill the clod in on the facts of life.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It’s a good time to look into that training pro-gram or college course you’ve been consider-ing. You might have a good place to use those sharpened skills sooner rather than later.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Education dominates much of your aspect during this week. You might want to start checking out those summer session cours-es that could help advance your career plans.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Progress often comes in fits and starts. But at least you’re moving straight ahead with no back-sliding. You should soon be able to pick up the pace and reach your goals in due time.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be wary of a deal that gives confusing answers to your questions. Remember: It’s always risky swimming in unknown waters, so you need all the help you can get to stay on course.

BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing people together and creating close friendships wherever you go.

FREAKY FAUNA FACTS (continued):• The kiwi is also a flightless bird that mates for life and has the most developed sense of smell of modern birds.• Crocodiles are color blind.• Owls are the only bird with the ability to see the color blue.• Giraffes have no vocal chords.• The Purple Frog is an Indian frog that wasn’t discovered until 2003 because of a very unique trait. Purple Frogs live thirteen feet beneath the ground and only come up for two weeks during the monsoon season to mate – making them very hard to find!• The horn of a narwhal is actually a tusk. It is rare, but not impossible, for a narwhal to have two tusks like an elephant.

• The solendon is a mammal in Cuba and Hispaniola that injects venom into its prey through its teeth. It is the only mammal that does so.• The Bumblebee Bat is so small it can fit inside a bottle cap.• The kakapo, a New Zealand native, averages at eight pounds and is the heaviest parrot in the world. There are approximately sixty kakapos left in the world today.• The fish with the glowing antenna in Finding Nemo? That’s a female Angler. The male is 1/20th her size and spends his life attached to and slowly fusing with the female.• A house fly only lives about two weeks!• The heart of a blue whale is about the size of a small car.

MUSIC LEGEND:

ELVIS PRESLEYThe “King,” Elvis Presley, came from the humblest of beginnings. He was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Vernon Elvis Presley, a truck driver, and mother Gladys Love Smith, a sewing machinist. Who could have foreseen that he would become a legendary performer and sell millions of records?

• For Elvis’ 11th birthday his parents bought him his first guitar for $7.75. He had wanted a bicycle, but the guitar was all they could afford.

• Elvis always said he was influenced by gospel music. His favorite singer was legendary Southern gospel singer Jake Hess.

• Presley’s first commercial record release: July 19, 1954’s “That’s all right (Mama)” and “Blue Moon of Kentucky.”

• Presley’s first records for Sun Studios: “Good Rockin’ Tonight” and “I Don’t Care if the Sun Don’t Shine” on September 25, 1954.

• His first network TV appearance: “Stage Show” hosted by the Dorsey brothers on July 5, 1954. Elvis, Scotty Moore and Bill Black (the Blue Moon Boys) sang “That’s all Right (Mama).”

• “All Shook Up,” “(Let me Be Your) Teddy Bear” and “Too Much” were his hits in the early 1950s, and his record sales grew quickly during that period. In 1956, Presley launched his career as a film actor with “Love Me Tender.” He made 31 movies.

• The spelling of his middle name on his birth certificate is smudged, and it’s never been clear

DON’T GET WET! (continued):

• The world’s wettest spot, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, is Mt. Waialeale, Hawaii, where an average of 451 inches (1,146 cm) of rain falls each year. More than 642 inches (1631 cm) fell from July 1947 to July 1948!

• If you live in the continental U. S. and see rain outside your window at this moment, maybe you live in the vicinity of the nine major weather stations with over 60 inches (152.4 cm) of precipitation annually. Mt. Washington, NH, 101.9 in. (258.8 cm) and Quillayute, WA, 101.7 in. (258.3 cm) lead the pack; and the others are: Astoria, OR; Mobile, AL; Pensacola, FL; New Orleans, LA; Tallahassee, FL; Baton Rouge, LA; and West Palm Beach, FL.

• While the wettest areas in the continental U.S. are scattered across the country, Canada’s wettest areas are all in British Columbia. The fish hatchery at Henderson Lake received 908.2 centimeters (nearly 30 ft.) of precipitation in 1997! Hartley Bay measures an annual average of 454.9 centimeters (nearly 15 feet).

• If you live in a high desert climate, you are probably familiar with “wet snow” and “dry snow.” The average snow-to-water ratio is 10:1; so that ten inches of melted snow equals one inch of water. Wet snow can have a ratio of 5:1 and dry snow can be extreme with a ratio at or exceeding 30:1. If you want to make a snowman or have a snowball fight, wet snow is best!

• Tidbits hopes you are having a great winter; with wet, dry or even no snow!

FREAKY FAUNA FACTS (continued):• The echidna and platypus are the only egg-laying mammals in the world. An egg-laying mammal is called a monotreme.• The duck-billed platypus is venomous!• Kangaroos cannot walk backwards.• A hippopotamus can open its jaw so wide that an eight year old could stand up in its mouth.• A sloth can turn its heads 270º.• The Chinese Giant Salamander can grow to the length of an average human!• The Gardiner’s Seychelles frog is the world’s smallest frog. It measures less than half the length of its name when typed.• Elephants cannot jump.

• The Mekong Giant Catfish is the largest scale-less fresh-water fish in the world. It lives in the Mekong river system in Asia, which spans through the countries of Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. This endangered species can grow up to 650 lbs (295 kg), can live up to sixty years and can reach up to 10 ft (3 m) long.

• Armadillo is a Spanish word meaning “little armored one.”• The ostrich’s eye measures two inches (five centimeters) – the largest of any land animal!

• While it resembles a small bear, the wolverine is actually part of the weasel family.

• The Andean condor has a wingspan of 10.5 ft (3.2 m) - the largest of any bird in the world.

• A newborn kangaroo can fit inside a teaspoon.

• Wallace’s flying frog is a species in Malaysia and Borneo that can glide in the air like a flying squirrel.

• The Blue-footed booby is a type of booby, a sea bird, with bright blue feet. The bluer the hue, the more attractive the male is to a female, though both sexes have blue feet.

• Xiphactinus Audax was a 17 ft (5 m) fish from

ELVIS PRESLEY (CONTINUED): if it is Aaron or Aron.• Elvis and Elvira. Strange but true: The one-

time Cassandra Peterson, known to fans as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, was once a Vegas showgirl. Presley took a professional interest in her, advising her to focus on her singing, which he thought was impressive.

• Everyone knows Presley started out driving a truck, but before that, he worked as an usher, leading folks to their seats in the local movie theater, specifically, the Loews State Theater on Memphis’ Main Street. He only lost the job because the girls liked him a little too much.

• Elvis gets bewitched. The King had a number of romantic liaisons in the sixties, most of them famous. Yet few know about his reportedly deep love for Elizabeth Montgomery, better known as the original Samantha on TV’s “Bewitched.”

• Elvis’ favorite foods were peanut butter and banana sandwiches fried in butter, bacon fried crisp and corn bread and milk. His taste in food was very simple, but he was picky about who prepared his meals. He rarely ate out, instead preferring his food to be cooked by his family or closest friends.

• “Heartbreak Hotel” was the first record to reach number one on the Billboard Country and Western, rhythm and blues, and pop charts all in one week.

• Elvis was married in 1967 to Priscilla Presley, and their only child, Lisa Marie, was born on February 1, 1968. Health problems, drug dependency and other factors led to his death at

age 42 on August 16, 1977.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a 1-year-old pug that really smells. I take “Deb” to have her bathed, and a day later she smells again. I was giving her a bath every week and was told that it would dry out her skin. What should I do about it? I hate to give her up, but she smells really bad. Sign me -- Pinching My Nose in Rochester, N.Y.

DEAR PINCHING MY NOSE: I’ve never owned a dog that smelled so bad I had to give it up. But I have owned a few smelly dogs in my lifetime. In most cases of chron-ic odiferousness, a skin problem or other medical condition is the culprit. That’s why I would recommend you take Deb to a veterinarian who has experience with pugs and their unique issues. Any time a dog’s odor is frequently and noticeably un-pleasant -- not just when you get up close to their fur and sniff, but almost literally “Oh

man, Deb’s in the room,” you should have her checked out.One problem that’s been noted in pugs is yeast infections, which can produce a rather gnarly smell. Dogs prone to these infections need careful monitoring and shouldn’t be bathed too much (as dry skin can worsen the problem).Because pugs can suffer from skin prob-lems and allergies, you want to be careful about how frequently Deb is bathed and what shampoos are used. Talk to the vet about best grooming practices for a pug.

On May 28, 1754, George Washington, a young lieuten-ant colonel in the British Army and future president of the United States, leads an attack on French forces at Jumon-ville Glen in western Pennsylvania. The battle is later cred-ited with being the opening salvo in the French and Indian War (1754 to 1763). It was Washington’s first time in combat.

On May 26, 1897, the first copies of the classic vampire nov-el “Dracula,” by Irish writer Bram Stoker, appear in London bookshops. In 1890, Stoker published his first novel, “The Snake’s Pass.” Stoker would go on to publish 17 novels in all, but it was “Dracula” that eventually earned him literary fame.

On May 29, 1922, the United States Supreme Court rules that orga-nized baseball did not violate antitrust laws as alleged by the Baltimore franchise of the defunct Federal League in 1915. The Supreme Court held that organized baseball is not a business, but a sport, in spite of the fact that its clubs and players crossed state lines in order to play.

On May 25, 1935, at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, Babe Ruth hits his 714th home run, a record for ca-reer home runs that would stand for almost 40 years.

On May 30, 1963, a New Jersey teenager named Lesley Gore makes her first appearance on “American Bandstand,” sing-ing her hit-to-be “It’s My Party”. Lesley Gore (nŽe Lesley Sue Goldstein) was just a few weeks past her own 17th birthday when she performed one of the greatest teen-drama songs of all time.

On May 27, 1972, Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev and U.S. Pres-ident Richard Nixon, meeting in Moscow, sign the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) agreements. At the time, these agreements were the most far-reaching attempts ever to control nuclear weapons.

On May 24, 1991, the critically acclaimed road movie “Thelma and Louise” debuts in theaters, stunning audiences with a climac-tic scene in which its two heroines drive off a cliff into the Grand Canyon in a vintage 1966 green Ford Thunderbird convertible.

HOT TUB OWNERSReduce Your Chemical Use by at Least 69%

Aquafinesse is a revolution in hot water care. Yes, you’ve heard that before and we appreciate your skepticism. However, until now, everything you have added to your hot tub was intended to “treat” problems that Biofilm and Scale create. Well Aquafinesse does not “treat” these problems; it eliminates them and prevents them from returning. The technology behind Aquafinesse acts like a wallpaper stripper removing Biofilm and Scale from your hot tub. Aquafinesse then creates a teflon-like barrier that does not allow these contaminants to return. By eliminating the causes of fouled water Aquafinesse helps maintain water balance and increase sanitizer effectiveness. A simple, once a week treatment with our non-toxic, non-corrosive technology and your water looks, feels and smells amazing.

I have psoriasis. After only a few times it cleared up and my skin felt so much better. I just couldn't believe it - I have spent so much on creams and ointments over the years. Turns out all I needed was Aquafinesse. Thanks for a wounderful product.

- J BennettSummerland, BC

Aquafinesse doesn’t dry out my skin, its worth every penny.

- A. BrameVancouver Island, BC

We simply add Aquafinesse once a week, check that the one tab chlorine dispenser isn’t empty, that’s it. We have clear, clean smelling water and no more chlorine smell. This truly is a breakthrough product I would recommend to anyone.

- K. DiewoldParksville, BC

I have fallen in love with my spa again. I was prone to skin irritations after relaxing in my spa. Now I no longer experience itchiness. I highly recommend Aquafinesse if you have sensitive skin.

It was British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli who made the following observation: “My idea of an agreeable person is a person who agrees with me.” Hunters, take note: The largest deer that ever lived was the Irish elk, which became extinct more than 7,000 years ago. Though it stood a remarkable 7 feet tall at the shoulders, the creature’s most amaz-ing characteristic was its antlers, which could stretch 12 feet from tip to tip and weigh up to 90 pounds. Imagine that rack hanging on your living-room wall! If you are a parent, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that among the under-18 crowd, strawberries are the favorite fruit, followed closely by grapes and bananas.

Google Earth, the virtual geographic informa-tion program, isn’t just a fun thing to fiddle with on your computer; it can be a law-enforcement tool, too. Just last year, police in Switzerland no-ticed a cornfield that looked a bit odd; it turns out that the farmer was raising marijuana and had hidden the two-acre plot within his corn fields. The koala bear, that cute and cuddly icon of Down Under, never drinks water. The critters get all the water they need from the food they eat. Medical experts say that coconut water has the same pH and electrolyte balance as human blood. In fact, during World War II, doctors who were running low on supplies used coconut water in plasma transfusions. In 2002, in an effort to be more environmentally friend-ly, Ireland decided to try to reduce the use of plastic grocery bags by levying a 15-cent tax on each one. It worked, too -- use of the bags dropped by 95 percent.* * *Thought for the Day: “Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.” -- Roger Miller

FREAKY FAUNA FACTS (continued):the Cretaceous period. It could open its jaws so wide it could have swallowed up to two men at one time.

• Fireflies are actually beetles.

• Corals are carnivorous. While they can survive off algae, they are also armed with venomous barbs, which they can use to grab small fish.• The ivory-billed woodpecker was thought to be extinct until 2005, when the bird was caught on video in Arkansas.• The tiger is the largest member of the modern cat family.• There is a larger Asian freshwater fish, though scientists fear it might already be extinct. The scaled Chinese Paddlefish can reach up to 23 ft (7 m), but has not been sighted since 2003.• The Giant Squid, with eyes as big as beachballs, is still one of Earth’s greatest mysteries. Scientists show that the average Giant Squid weighs about 440 lbs (200 kg) and measures 33 ft (10 m) in length. The largest Giant Squid ever found weighed 900 kg, nearly one ton, and was measured at 59 ft (18 m). In 2006, Japanese scientists brought a living, female Giant Squid to the surface that measured 24 ft (7 m) long.• The Ozark big-eared bat is an endangered species in the Central Southern United States. They are named for their unique ears, which can be over 1/4th the length of their 4 in (10 cm) body.• Wildebeest is the Afrikaans name for the gnu, a member of the antelope family. Gnu calves learn to walk in a matter of minutes and are able to keep up with the heard after a few days.• The Amazonian Arapaima is a large, scaled, freshwater fish that surfaces to take air. It can stay underwater anywhere from ten to twenty minutes at a time and can weigh up to 440 lbs (200 kg).

“Our 4-year-old twins were recently in my sister’s wedding as flower girls. To get them used to their outfits, the dress-shop owner suggested they wear the dresses in 10-, 20- and 30-minute sessions in the two weeks preceding the wedding -- during activities where they would not stain or otherwise damage the dress. They were more comfortable in their clothes after having ‘practiced,’ and they didn’t pull at their clothes and fidget much.” -- T.F., via e-mail

Here’s a tip for a quick pin cushion: Use a clean Styrofoam tray. The pins go in straight, and are quite secure.

“When we’re playing card games with the kids, they use a large chip clip to hold their ‘hand’ to-gether. It works pretty well.” -- W.R. in Ohio

Pizza cutters make great sandwich trimmers. You easily can trim the crust and cut the sandwich. They’re also great for cutting up hot dogs.

To attack cobwebs or dust high walls, cover a broom head with a pillowcase. You’ll get better coverage, and the pillowcase can easily be tossed in the wash.

“We don’t have a mudroom in our house, so to catch water and mud on days of heavy rain, I have a clean plastic shower curtain that I place on the floor of the entranceway. We leave wet, muddy shoes on it, and it even can catch drips from um-brellas and such. The whole thing can be dragged to the garage if necessary.” -- I.S. in Alabama
