Q: How many country & western singers does it take to change a lightbulb ?A: Four. One to change it, one to sing about how heartbroken he is at the loss of the old one, one to sing about how madly in love she is with the new one, and one to go “Yeeeee-Haw !” and throw his hat in the air.

Q: I have my mother's Shaker spinning wheel that was appraised in 1980 for $600. It was identified as made in an upstate Shaker community in New York, probably dur-ing the mid-1800s. How can I find someone to appraise it again and, perhaps, find a worthy home for this fine wheel? -- Nancylee, Oxford, Conn.
A: What a gracious thing to consider doing. Since your spinning wheel likely originated in New York, contact the New York State Museum. Ask to speak to the curator and tell him or her about your wheel and ask if they would be interested in accepting it and, if so, could they provide you with an appraisal for your personal records. The address and phone number are 222 Madison Ave., Albany, NY 12230, and 518-474-5877.
• • •Q: I have a graduation certificate from the Locker
Method of Muscular Movement Business Writing Easy Method from 1920. It is beautiful, and I would love to know more about it. -- Mary, Kissimmee, Fla.
A: I could find no record of the company that issued your certificate. Most certificates from this period often sell for less than $25. A document involving a historical person would, of course, be worth much more.
• • •Q: I purchased a Star Wars puzzle at a flea market for
$25. It is the "Aboard the Millennium Falcon," has 1,000 pieces and is complete. Good deal or bad deal? -- Rob, Albuquerque, N.M.
A: Bad deal. According to the "Official Price Guide to Star Wars Memorabilia" by Jeremy Beckett, your puzzle is worth less than $10. I checked with two serious collec-tors, and they agreed with Beckett's appraisal.

• On Dec. 4, 1872, a British ship spots the Mary Celeste, a 100-foot American brig, sailing erratically but at full sail near the Azores Islands with not a soul on board. The last entry in the captain’s log was dated 11 days earlier, showing that the Mary Celeste had been drifting since then with no one at the wheel. The fate of the crew remains a mystery to this day.
• On Dec. 6, 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a 9-inch aluminum pyramid atop a tower of white marble, com-pleting construction of a monument to the city’s namesake and the nation’s first president, George Washington.
• On Dec. 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Con-stitution is ratified, repealing the 18th Amendment and bringing an end to the era of national prohibition of alcohol in America. Utah became the 36th state to ratify the amend-ment, achieving the requisite three-fourths majority of states’ approval.
• On Dec. 3, 1947, Marlon Brando’s famous cry of “STEL-LA!” first booms across a Broadway stage, electrifying the audience at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre during the first-ever performance of Tennessee Williams’ play “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
• On Dec. 9, 1950, Harry Gold -- who had confessed to serv-ing as a courier of top-secret information on the atomic bomb -- is sentenced to 30 years in jail for his crime. Gold implicat-ed his brother-in-law and sister, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were later convicted and executed for espionage.

PFC. Edwin L. HavenSeptember 24, 1924 ~ December 24, 1944
Appleton, MinnesotaLearn more at...

Appleton, Minnesota is the only city in the world to have all of its streets and avenues named after its fallen veterans. With the help of Appleton businesses and referencing the book Home of Honored Veterans, Tidbits of the Lake Area would like to introduce you to one of these Honored Soldiers each week.
PFC. Edwin L. Haven was born in Appleton on September 24, 1924, and was raised by his grandmother, Mrs. Joe Strittmatter. He attended school in Appleton and worked on the John Doring Dairy farm until he was drafted into the United States Army on January 21, 1943. He was 18 years old when he went into the service. He received his basic training at Camp Blanding, Florida, and Camp Rucker, Alabama, leaving for overseas duty in November, 1944. He served with the 66th Infantry. The following news release tells the story of his death: “The second largest loss of Army personnel occurred when the Leopoldville, a British controlled Belgian troopship, was torpedoed on the evening of December 24, 1944, and sank off Cherborg in the English Channel. It was enroute from Southhampton, England. Of the 2,237 United States troops aboard, 764 were lost. Edwin L. Haven was among those reported lost.” It was 9:00 at night - in total darkness - when the Leopoldville was torpedoed. Some of the men drowned and some froze to death. Some bodies were retrieved but frozen and loaded on wagons and taken to St. Angeliese Cemetery. Men in the hold of the ship remained there. The ship lays at the bottom of the ocean, five miles from Cherborg, France, in two hundred feet of water on its side. Survivors at the time of his death included his wife, Gerda; a son, Eddie Gene; and one sister, Inez Shelsta, then of Appleton. Haven Street is located in the center of Appleton, between Hering Street and Gaulke Street.
