This week, Tidbits brings you some history- making events from the crazy days of summers past and present. • When the cornerstone of the Statue of Liberty was laid in August of 1884, it was placed on Bedloe’s Island, which previously had been known as Love Island. The land didn’t officially become Liberty Island until 1956. When the Statue of Liberty arrived from France, it was in 350 individual pieces that were put together and officially dedicated in October of 1886. • The first edition of Sports Illustrated hit the newsstands in August of 1954, featuring Milwaukee Braves player Eddie Mathews on the cover. Inside, readers found a tri-fold of 27 baseball trading cards, including such greats as Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider. Although a hit, the magazine showed no profit for the next 12 years. Michael Jordan has set the record for the number of cover appearances at 56, with the New York Yankees the most featured team. Four U.S. Presidents have made the cover — Kennedy, Ford, Reagan and Clinton. Every year, Sports Illustrated gives its “Sportsman of the Year” award. Roger Bannister, the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, was given that honor during the magazine’s inaugural year. turn the page for more! AUGUST EVENTS (continued):

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A troubling situation takes a positive turn and moves toward a resolution that should please you and your supporters. Meanwhile, make time to deal with new domestic issues.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to reassess your goals and con-sider shifting directions. Remember to keep an open mind, and be prepared to make changes as new opportunities arise.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Rely on your strong Mercury aspect to help you close that communication gap before it becomes too wide to cross. A sibling or other family mem-ber has news.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’re about to get off that emotional roller coaster and start experiencing more stability than you’ve been used to. This is a good time to let someone new into your life.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Good news: A trusted friend comes through for you. But you still need to shed that last scrap of self-doubt and once more become the cool, confident Cat we all know and love.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Things should be getting back to a less hectic pace. Enjoy the more peaceful atmosphere. You earned it. But don’t forget about those still-unre-solved issues.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A more positive family relationship develops as misunderstandings are explained away. A job situation appears promising, but check it out before you act on it.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Congratulations. That on-the-job situation is working out as you’d hoped. Now’s a good time to relax and to enjoy the company of family and close friends.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might feel as if you’re caught in an emotion-al tug-of-war. But don’t be rushed into a deci-sion on either side. Wait for more facts before you act.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Goat’s usually high level of self-confidence is brimming over these days. This should help you deal with a situation that you’ve avoided for far too long. Go for it.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Relationships become more intense. But be careful not to be pushed into decisions you’re not comfortable with. Remember: You’re the one in charge of your life.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You need to show more confidence in your abil-ity to reach your goals. Make that long-delayed decision, and avoid floundering around in a sea of self-doubt.

BORN THIS WEEK: Although you appear to be strongly opinionated, you can also be open to other ideas -- so long as they are presented with logic and clarity.

Information for Tidbits re: new Library in City Centre

The new Surrey City Centre Library, designed by Vancouver-based Bing Thom Architects (BTA), is set to open on September 24, 2011. This new building marks the next phase of a major civic investment that will continue the transformation of downtown Surrey. This new civic development will ultimately include a new City Hall, a large urban plaza, underground civic parkade and a performing arts centre – all of which will be close to one of the most heavily used transit hubs in Metro Vancouver. As the first piece of this new devel-opment, Surrey City Centre Library is the anchor that will contribute to the vitality of downtown Surrey.

Beth Barlow, Chief Librarian for Surrey Libraries notes, “Surrey Libraries attracted over 2.4 million visitors last year. We know that the new building will attract even more people to connect and share information, knowledge, and culture. As our largest Library, equipped with the latest in technology, including free wire-less access, as well as community spaces, a large childrens’ library and a coffee shop, we are anticipating that the new library will quickly become a destination.

The Design of a 21st-Century Library

The role of the library is changing and that the book collection is no longer the central focus. While the Library will continue to act as public institution that inspires learning, advances electronic information means that providing ‘people spaces’ for evolving library activities is now the priority. These activities range from the traditional research and education roles to a gathering place in the community.

The Library’s design features include large windows, a welcoming entrance with clear sight lines that allow visitors to quickly orient themselves in the space, and an upward winding staircase and a skylight. The form of the building is inspired by the curve of University Drive with an added feature provided by outward-sloping walls. Designed to LEED standards, the outward sloped walls also provide solar shading.

With a grand, center atrium and private study areas, the building includes 3 community multipurpose rooms, a 12 seat computer classroom, a meditation room, and a teen lounge and gaming area. In addition, the Libraries’ Read-Ability Services for the blind and visually impaired will be relocated from the Guildford Library to a much more accessible ground floor space at City Centre.
