• On Aug. 5, 1957, Philadelphia-based "American Bandstand" goes national as the show is beamed to 67 ABC affiliates across the nation. The show included the famous segment in which teenage studio guests rated the newest records on a scale from 25 to 98 and offered such criticisms as "It's got a good beat and you can dance to it."

• On Aug. 7, 1964, the United States Congress overwhelming approves the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, giving President Lyndon Johnson nearly unlimited powers to oppose "communist aggression" in Southeast Asia. The Johnson administration went on to use the resolution as a pretext to begin heavy bombing of North Vietnam in early 1965 and to introduce U.S. combat troops in March 1965.

• On Aug. 8, 1974, in an evening televised address, President Richard Nixon announces his intention to become the first president in American history to resign. Impeachment proceedings were under way for his involvement in the Watergate affair.

Q: I have been a fan of Natasha Hen-stridge since "Species" (who could forget that role?), and really liked her on the now-canceled "Eli Stone." What does she have coming up? -- Greg D., via e-mail

A: Natasha has been pretty busy since playing Taylor Wethersby on "Eli Stone." The beautiful blonde, who turns 36 on Aug. 15, re-cently starred in "You Lucky Dog" opposite Harry Hamlin (who I've redeveloped my crush on since watching "Clash of the Titans" again). She also starred in the film "The Perfect Student" and starred in the TV miniseries "Impact" with David James Elliott ("Scoundrels").

You can catch her on Sunday, Aug. 8, in the Lifetime Original Movie "The Devil's Teardrop," a mystery/thriller based on the best-selling book by Jeffery Deaver. She plays a special agent assigned to catch a serial killer who's on the rampage in Washington, D.C. Natasha co-stars with Tom Everett Scott ("That Thing You Do") and Rena Sofer ("Just Shoot Me!").

• • •Q: Does Jeanne Cooper, who plays Katherine Chancellor on "The Young and The Restless," have

a son or two in show business? If so, who are they? -- Janet C., Battle Creek, Mich.A: The Grand Dame of daytime television does indeed have children who are actors: daughter Caren,

son Collin and, most famous, son Corbin Bernsen (of "L.A. Law," "Major League" and "Psych" fame). Jeanne's husband (now deceased) was TV producer Harry Bernsen Jr. They divorced after 23 years of marriage, but reportedly remained best friends until his death in 2008. Corbin, 55, plays the recurring part of Father Todd Williams on his mom's show, and he directed Jeanne, 81, in the films "Carpool Guy" and "Donna on Demand," as well as many other projects.

• • •Q: I watched "Stargate: Atlantis" from the beginning, and really like one character who wasn't in

the show for the entire run of the series. Can you give me more information on Rainbow Francks? Also, is he related to Canadian actor Don Francks? -- June J., Holberg, B.C., Canada

A: Rainbow Sun Francks, 30, is indeed the son of Don Francks, as well as the brother of actress Cree Summer (who is best known for her role in "A Different World"). You can catch him this sum-mer in the CBS police drama "The Bridge," which airs Saturdays. He guest-stars in the ninth episode of this first season. The show, which originated in Canada, already aired his episode (titled "Never Let Me Down Again") in April, but you might be able to catch it online or in reruns.

• • •Q: Can you tell me if Jill from

"Wipeout" is the same girl on the Mercury car commercials? -- Burton L. in N.Y.

A: "Wipeout" co-host Jill Wagner is indeed known as the "Mercury Chick" for her commercial and print ads for Lincoln-Mercury (since 2005). The 31-year-old North Carolina native also has appeared on "Blade: The Series," "Stargate: Atlantis" and "Bones."

July 22 - 28, 2010

In 2009, Mark Martin enjoyed a glori-ous comeback, finishing second in the Sprint Cup standings and winning five races.

And that was at age 50. Now Martin is 51, and results haven't been as encourag-ing this season for the Batesville, Ark., native.

At the moment, Martin has to worry about making the Chase for the Sprint Cup, which is limited to the top 12 in the point standings at the end of the 26 races that comprise the regular season. The championship is then determined over the final 10.

Martin knows he faces a challenge to make the Chase, and he knows pressure will increase and tempers will flare as the next seven races wind down.

"As we go forward, the kind of racing that we had at the end of (recent races) will not be every three weeks in the future," he said. "It will be every week, everywhere. Right now it's every third week or so.

"That's what equal cars, double-file restarts and all that stuff brings you to, which is going to be fun to watch."

Though Martin has only competed once in the Nationwide Series this year, he is its all-time leader with 48 victories, though Kyle Busch is clos-ing in and now has 37 victories, including seven this year.

"Records are going to fall, and I'm going to stand there and watch them,"

Mark Martin Knows the Challengesaid Martin. "Just as Jack Ingram (31 wins) stood and watched his fall, it's not going stand the test of time, but that's OK, too. That still doesn't lessen what I did, what I managed to do."

Martin's 40 Cup victories rank him 16th all-time, trailing Bill Elliott by four.

Racing isn't just competitive. To Martin's way of thinking, it's rougher and more aggres-sive than ever.

"It's getting worse mostly because of the nature of our racing and the growth of the sport," he said. "You wouldn't be able to keep a job if you raced 20 years ago, if you drove for somebody and you wrecked as many cars as you wreck today. You wouldn't keep a job.

"The teams could not justify it. They didn't have the manpower. They didn't have the money. They couldn't repair these cars and get them back out there. You wouldn't last. But it's a different day and age now. It is just different, and there's a lot of pressure on these guys."

"Head to Tail We l l n e s s : Western Vet-erinary Med-icine Meets E a s t e r n Wisdom" by Stacy Fuchi-no, V.M.D.

Alternative medicine has gotten side-wise looks in the past from vets and owners alike. It's fine to go to an acupuncturist your-self, but what good does it do for a dog or cat? Dr. Stacy Fuchino, who has augmented his degree in veterinary medicine with studies in Eastern medicine and Feng Shui, argues that it does a world of good. He presents case studies from his own practice of pets with chronic illnesses that improved follow-ing treatment with a combination of Western medical treatment and Eastern practices.

"Cat-echisms: Fundamentals of Feline Faith" by Ellis Weiner & Barbara Davilman

This is a fine example of the pet-persona genre, which many cat lovers probably will find endearing. "Cat-echisms," as the title suggests, bases its style on the Catholic method of outlining fundamental beliefs and principles through a question-and-answer series. This is a small book, short enough to read in one sitting or just to leave on your coffee table.

"Stay" by Allie Larkin Finally, a bit of fiction to chew on. "Stay" takes a fur-laden twist when

our heroine, Savannah, impulsively buys a puppy off the Internet. (I won't go into all the reasons why Internet pet sales are wrong, but the author does take pains to point out many of them.) If you've ever owned a big dog, you'll immediately identify with Joe and Savannah's first day together. The slobbery wake-up call. The harrying first walk with an excited canine. The big pile of poo on the carpet. Yes, it's not your typical romance novel. But it's definitely worth a read.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I, like the letter-writer P.G., had to run to the bathroom constantly in order not to have an accident. I wanted to see my grandson graduate from college, so I consulted a urologist. He sent me to a place where treatments with an electrical probe were given. I went for six weeks and also did Kegel exercises. The quality of my life changed for the better, and now I square dance and do aerobics. Incontinence is no longer a problem. -- E.M.

ANSWER: Electrical stimulation of the pelvic mus-cles has successfully allowed many women to regain bladder control. It doesn't work for all, however. The stimulation strengthens muscles that keep the bladder closed, and controls overactive bladder wall muscles that contract forcefully and frequently.

Another technique is a device that delivers electric current to spinal nerves in the lower back. If those nerves respond to the current and keep the bladder closed, then a small unit is implanted under the skin for a permanent solution to this problem. One such device is called the InterStim.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have an EKG done every

year. I also have worn a monitor that records heart activity for three days. Everything is fine.

When I fall asleep most nights, I wake after about 10 minutes with a rapid heartbeat, and sometimes it takes quite a time before it settles down and I can get back to sleep. I rarely have such a rapid beat at any other time of the day. Do you know what causes this, or what it might be? I am 57. -- S.B.

ANSWER: If I had to make a guess, it would be paroxysmal atrial tachycardia, a sudden heart speedup for no reason. It's usually not a serious condition, and it doesn't indicate heart disease. If the rate is really fast or if the episode lasts for a prolonged period, then treatment would be needed.

No one can be sure unless the rhythm comes on when a doctor is present or when you are hooked up to an EKG machine. That monitor you wore for three days can be left on for longer stretches of time. Or you could have someone take you to the emergency department of a hospital if you can reach it somewhat quickly. You can't obtain a diagnosis without such information.

The booklet on heartbeat disorders discusses their more common forms. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My wife, 76, has degenerative

arthritis of the spine. Can you tell me if this condition will progress to total disability? -- J.D.

ANSWER: Degenerative arthritis is another name for osteoarthritis, the most common kind of arthritis. Almost every 70-year-old has a touch of it. It can be in the back, knee, hip, hand, fingers and ankle, or any of these locations. The rate of progression is unpredictable. A good many can continue to do most of the activities of life with minimum dis-ruption.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is

unable to answer individual let-ters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Organic ControlBy Doris A. Black

Because of improper lawn care, disease and insect infesta-tion, it is sometimes diffi cult to diagnose a sickly lawn. This article will discuss some of the common insect pests, how to recognize their presence and the best organic control remedy.

An infestation of bugs is rarely ignored by the homeowner but many insects are benefi cial to the lawn and garden, as they

feed on less desirable critters. By inadvertently killing the benefi cial bugs, we alter the balance of nature, giving free reign to the bad bugs.

How can we determine what is causing lawn problems? There is a simple soap test that will expose the enemies. Add one teaspoon of liquid detergent to one quart of water. Pour it into a one-foot square area and watch closely for any bugs that emerge. It usually takes less than 10 minutes. Test several areas for consistency.

Small dead spots on the lawn are an indication of either cutworms or sod webworms. Both feed during the night by eat-ing the grass near its base during warm weather. The cutworm

is actually a one- to two-inch long brown/gray caterpillar. Cornmeal works great to exterminate cutworms. Just sprinkle it on the grass and your problem is solved. Sod webworms are a bit small but also of the caterpillar type. They have shiny, dark heads and light brown bodies with dark spots. From these spots protrude stiff hairs. At a maximum one-inch long, they are a favorite snack for birds. When birds seem to routinely dine in your grass, this may be an indication of sod webworms. Control them with an application of bacillus thuringiensis every few days over a 10-day period.

Yellow or brown circular patches are an indication of chinch bugs or billbug grubs. During the hottest weather, chinch bugs graze on the juices of grass. Lawns that are stressed by hot, dry weather, thatch or low nitrogen levels are particularly prone to chinch bugs. During the soap test, look for small black-winged bugs with a triangular patch on their backs. An effective treatment is an application of insecticidal soap mixed with isopropyl alcohol. Spray the lawn four times in a 10-day period. Billbug grubs are white, approximately half an inch long with black patches on their backs and orange and brown heads. Grass that has been in-fected with billbug grubs will pull up easily, and if you look closely at the roots, you’ll see a fi ne sawdust-like material. Treat billbug grubs with milky spore disease.

Irregular brown patches are most often caused by white grubs, the larvae of the Japanese beetle or May beetle. More than 10 grubs in a one-foot square area is considered a severe infestation and the lawn may be easily lifted to expose the grubs. If this is the case, treat white grubs with milky spore disease.

Thin yellow grass that grows slowly and does not ap-pear healthy may be stricken with nematodes. Nematodes attach during hot weather when grass is stressed. They are tiny creatures that do their damage below ground, attacking roots. You may never see them. Fortunately, controlling them is easy. Fertilize the lawn in the spring with fi sh emulsion for best results.

Irregular brown streaks are symptomatic of mole crickets that burrow under the ground to eat roots. Newly planted lawns are the most susceptible because of their tender young

roots. Mole crickets are rav-enous eaters and severe infes-tations can kill an entire lawn in one season, so treat them immediately with bacillus thuringiensis.

Tattered, shabby blades of grass are often an indication of slugs or snails. Most gar-deners know these critters eat ravenously at night in moist conditions. Usually under plant debris during the day, they awake toward nightfall eager to dine. Slugs have fat, soft, slimy bodies that can reach eight inches in length. Garden snails look just like you imagine with their hard shells. Gardeners have con-cocted many ways to rid their lawns of these critters. Beer lures work remarkably well. The principle is simple, the practice, easy. Fill a butter tub or other shallow con-tainer with beer and place it half buried in the lawn. The snails and slugs won’t be able to resist the beer and will fall in and drown.

With so many new organic products on the market these days, there is really no reason to apply chemicals to your lawn. The next time a family of these critters takes up resi-dence in your yard, you’ll know how to find, identify and control them the organic way.
