It’s every parent’s worst nightmare.

Finding out that your child has cancer can be the most terrifying experience a parent can endure. A diagnosis can turn the lives of a family upside down – days are suddenly filled with alternating moments of courage, frustration, anxi-ety, pain and fear. Parents of these children know how difficult it is to look into the innocent eyes of your dear, trusting child and know that you cannot fix their cancer and make everything better by yourself. You pray for the best medicine that is available and of course for a miracle.

Childhood cancer remains the number one cause of death in American children who are infected by disease ---more than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, asthma and AIDS combined. In the United States, over 12,000 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed every year. 3,000 of them will not survive the disease. About one in 300 boys and one in 333 girls will develop cancer before the age of 20. The statistics do not take into account the significant health problems that come with a childhood cancer diagnosis that are life long.

The fight against childhood cancer, brain tumors and spinal cord tumors continues in Wyoming and throughout the United States. A recent pageant to honor Delaney Wadsworth, a Wyoming child with a rare brain tumor, brings to light once again how devastating childhood cancer can be.

Wyoming struggles with access to diagnostic and thera-peutic resources for children diagnosed with cancer. The standard of care for children with cancer is treatment at an accredited cancer center that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer.

Therefore, once a child is diagnosed with cancer in the state of Wyoming, they are immediately transferred out of state, often to Denver, Salt Lake City, or sometimes much further away, to begin treatment at a specialized pediatric cancer center. With no primary cancer treatment avail-able for children in Wyoming, this creates a tremendous financial burden, as well as time spent out of state, to families who are also dealing with the emotional stress of cancer diagnosis.

Jason’s Friends Foundation was created to assist families throughout Wyoming whose children are suf-fering with cancer, brain tumors or spinal cord tumors. It was established in 1996 in memory of our son Jason Eades, a wonderful, extraordinary, and courageous nine year old boy who fought the same cancer that Delaney now suffers from.

We are a volunteer non-profit 501(c)3 organization that provides Wyoming families financial and emotional support while coping with a child’s cancer diagnosis and treatment. We have only one part-time employee and 22 volunteers.

Jason’s Friends is currently assisting 70 Wyoming fami-lies. So far in 2010, we have assisted with over $400,000 of non-medical family expenses. These expenses include significant travel expenses – things like fuel, lodging and meals.

Expenses can also include everyday living expenses - things like house payments, rent payments, utility pay-ments, car payments, vehicle maintenance, insurance, groceries and other essential household bills. We recently surpassed the 1.5 million dollar mark – meaning we have given out over 1.5 million dollars to Wyoming families.

Jason’s Friends makes sure that within the state of Wyoming families like Delaneys, will not have to lose ev-erything because they have had the misfortune of having a child with cancer. We allow these families to concentrate on their sick child—and not have to worry about how they will make their next house payment.

Having a child with cancer is an emotional and financial burden on any family, especially Wyoming families.

Jason’s Friends provides confidential support when hope is difficult to sustain and assistance is hard to ac-cept.

The financial support for Jason’s Friends from through-out Wyoming has been remarkable. From one dollar to thousands of dollars the people of Wyoming never hesitate to help their fellow citizens.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. How many times have we heard that? How does it make you feel? Are you grateful for a new day or irritated because you see it as more of the same? We tend to get caught up in the tasks of day to day living without viewing each new day as an opportunity for something better. If we want something better, we must be willing to make changes and changes mean taking risks. Taking risks mean we have to step out of our comfort zone. This may seem scary initially but think about how many times you have done this and done it successfully. One of your first most significant risks was learn-ing to walk. You pulled yourself up hesitantly, decided to let go, toddled and took several steps in a row before you felt your sense of balance. You took off for a new world with an upright perspective on the world never to be content with staying in the same place again. Your new skill opened the door to the freedom you coveted from the time you first realized other people were moving around and you were stuck in one spot. You did it. You walked and you ran. You never looked back or even considered the possibility of not continu-ing to walk because crawling was safe and sure.

Imagine yourself having the courage today to pursue your dream without doubting, second guessing yourself or looking back to a place where you were not fulfilled or challenged but was familiar. This is how all dreams and aspira-tions begin. Think about a dream you have or a goal you would like to accomplish. Visualize what your life will be like and how you will feel. Yes, I said will not would or could. Now give yourself permission to have it. What a daunting concept; no doubts and you’ve gotten out of your own way to move toward it. Oth-ers may tell you that you can’t, it’s too much work, there’s risk involved or present a myriad of other nay slaying comments. They may say things because they do not have the courage to step out of their own boxes or may be jealous of yours. Now, of course this does not mean you are going to go running off without a plan or engaging in something that can harm you or others. Every destination requires a plan to get there. Your plan needs to have steps like rungs on a ladder. Make them small enough to give you successes throughout the pursuit. Re-member, your first mode of locomotion was rolling and crawling. Next, locate your sup-ports. Once you begin vi-sualizing and talking about your dream, you will gain support in the most unlikely and pleas-antly surpris-ing places. Keep moving forward at a

steady pace. Stay in contact with people who make you feel good about your direction. Stay focused, stay organized and don’t let minor setbacks send you crawling away. Many people regret things they didn’t do because they were afraid and missed their opportunities. What is your reaction to the phrase, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life?”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- What is clearly understood at Daytona International Speedway is that no one understands it clearly. The Daytona 500 shapes up as an

indecipherable quandary wrapped up in a riddle.Each time NASCAR changes rules, particularly at Daytona and Talladega,

more changes than the rules. Some changes are completely unexpected. The latest changes, which also involve the installation of new pavement at the track, have NASCAR's best drivers pondering just what they are going to do and smartest mechanics feverishly analyzing what just happened.

After test sessions in December and January, drivers spoke of the track's $20 million surface as if it were a present under a tree on Christmas morning. A common claim was that the Daytona 500 was going to be "just like Talladega." If that's true, Talladega Superspeedway is really going to have to change.

The racing in the Budweiser Shootout was, in fact, like absolutely nothing that preceded it. Talladega has been described as dangerous, thrilling, nuts, off the wall (literally) and even random in nature, but what transpired at Daytona on Friday night was weird. If the Budweiser Shootout had been featured on the menu at Waffle House, it would have been ordered scattered and smothered.

The cars only seem to race in groups of twos. Not two-by-two, down through the pack. Two here, two there, two everywhere. If a drivers loses his partner, his car falls into what might as well be an abyss. If he pulls in front of two cars, they run over him. If he tries to pull in behind, they leave him. Until he finds a partner of his very own, he might as well be coasting to a stop on the Highway to Hell.

In the Shootout, the various and sundry duos dynamic, guided by the vari-ous and sundry captains courageous, drafted at more than 206 mph. Alone in qualifying on Sunday, the fastest car, driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr., was 20 mph slower.

"It's all about getting locked on," said the second fastest qualifier, Jeff Gordon. "When you're the lead car, you feel as if you're constantly being pushed. You feel a little tap. If you're not getting that tap, I mean, you drop 5 mph instantly.

"We always thought, in drafting, four cars were better than two cars, and eight cars were better than four. That's over. Three cars would actually go faster than two if you could get them together, but you can't do it because the second car becomes the middle of a sandwich and it gets out of control."

Changes to Reverse Mortgages

A reverse mortgage gives you money out of the equity in your home. You can get it in monthly sums, as a line of credit or all at once. The money doesn’t have to be paid back until you die or sell the house.

Sounds good, right? But reverse mortgages have always been a tricky and complicated business, and now laws have recently changed concerning reverse mortgages.

--Appraisers are more protected now, and you have less recourse over a bad appraisal.

--You’ll be required to complete counseling to learn about reverse mortgages.

--The Federal Housing Administration has low-ered upfront fees in its new Home Equity Conver-sion Mortgage Saver program as of October 2010. You’ll be charged 0.01 percent of the value of the home, instead of the mammoth thousands of dollars that often were charged with the Standard version before the change. The catch is that you can’t take out as much equity as before. Mortgage insurance is now 1.25 percent annually. The Saver program works best if you’re only going to stay in your home for a few years.

However, the Standard reverse mortgages have some changes, too. You’ll still pay an upfront

mortgage insurance premium of 2 percent of the value of the home. If paid monthly, that changes to a whopping 1.25 percent of the value of the home -- it had been 0.5 percent. Bottom line: Standard now costs more.

No matter which version you choose, all liens must be paid off. The amount you get is determined by the value of your home, your age (age 62 or above) and the going interest rates.

from two angles. First, even though you haven't changed his daily schedule, something subtle may have changed in the house or yard. Pay attention to nighttime happenings. Is there some new noise outside? Did something happen while you were asleep, perhaps, that may have caused Fixer to become anxious?

Next, make some changes in his day and night routine that will help him feel more secure when you're asleep. Extend his evening walk a bit and add some basic obedience training and play time to the evening schedule. When it's your bedtime, lead Fixer over to his bedding and have him lie down and stay. Check back in five minutes, then in 30; if he's still in his bed, praise him and give him a little treat. If he's not in his bed, lead him back and repeat. Place a favorite chew toy next to him.

At first, Fixer will hop right back out once he thinks you're asleep and proceed with his nightly rummaging. Be patient. It will take some time for him to associate this routine with the idea that you want him to stay there at night. Meantime, keep placing people things out of reach. Put doggie toys in their place.

Q: I have a large collection of Avon bottles. Even though I don’t have the Internet, I hope you can help me find out current values. -- Pauline, Manchester, N.H.

A: Since so many readers have written me recently about Avon collectibles, a brief history lesson might be in order.

The California Perfume Company was founded in 1886. Even though the “Avon” line was intro-duced by the company during the 1920s, it was not marketed as such until 1939. Collecting, especially the earlier items, is still brisk, but prices appear to have softened in recent years. For example, a 1960s globe bank that contained bubble-bath crystals was valued in a 1975 price guide for $35, and currently retails for about $15.

• • •Q: I have an issue of Good Housekeeping, the

Christmas edition, from December 1928. What is it worth? -- Linda, Cuba City, Wisc.

A: As with most collectibles, condition is paramount. Does your magazine have its original cover. Has anything been clipped from it, and does it show signs of obvious wear. Who designed the cover, and is there anything exceptional about the magazine’s content?

Good Housekeeping was first published in 1885 and was acquired by Hearst in 1911. It was without a doubt one of America’s most successful maga-zines. Highlights include covers and illustrations by such artists as Jessie Willcox Smith and Coles Phillips. Look, too, for stories by Kathleen Norris, Pear S. Buck, Sinclair Lewis, Agatha Christie and Stephen Vincent Benet. The Rose O’Neill kewpies also are collectible.

If your magazine is fairly standard, it is probably worth about $20. If it has an exceptional cover or features any of the above mentioned talents, it is worth more.

One of the goals of the Craig and Susan Thomas Foundation is to introduce students to some of the GRAND POSSIBILITIESavailable after high school.

We provide opportunities to Wyoming high school graduates and GED recipients, who DO NOT qualify for Hathaway scholarships, who have struggled in school, who want to further their education.

Is the economy recovering? Let’s see what the experts say:

--We’ve seen a small increase in the number of hours worked per week.

--Champagne sales are up.--Companies are spending a bit more on assets

such as computers. --There are more job listings, and fewer people

are taking a second job.--There’s more traffic on the road as more

people are going to work and shopping.On a personal level, you can do your own test

of the economy in your area in the grocery store by looking in the shopping carts of other people. Do you see only the basics, all store brands? Are

there any snacks? Any beer or wine? Is there a good beef roast, steak or chicken parts instead of whole chickens?

Check the heels of the shoes of those in front of you in lines. Are the heels run down? Are the shoes new?

How many cars are in the parking lots of local restaurants on weekends?

When the economy is better, people feel safer about spending a bit more.

Not that this should change your own money-handling methods. While you might see more new cars on the road or your neighbors having their house painted or bottles of expensive wine in shop-ping carts, keep on track with your own spending plan. While we see signs of recovery, it’s uneven, and it’s not all across the board. It’s not completely over. We’re heading in the right direction, though, as seen with large and small indications, but we’re not there yet.

For one more year: Keep saving, and keep your credit balances low or paid off. Keep shopping at thrift stores, especially for kids clothes and toys. Change your own oil, if you haven’t been. Stick to your budget and have pizza and movie night at home. Don’t open new lines of credit. Conserve on heating and cooling. Keep up with yard and house maintenance so repairs don’t cost you more later.

Aim for having one year of expenses in the bank. Yes, that’s a lot, but many people have been out of work for longer than that.

Given our recent experiences, perhaps you’ll even decide to stick long term with some of the lifestyle changes you’ve made.
