•Davisbestedarecordheldbymenformorethan40years.Davisisn’t,byherowndescription,even a runner. She has always trained as along-distancehiker,andhertrainingtobeattherecord was the same.

•Daviscompleted the trail’s2,181milesmorethan 26 hours faster than the former record holder. The popular assumption before herattemptwasthatonlyafasterrunnercouldbeattherecord,butDavisbuckedtheconventionalwisdom. She began each day before 5 a.m.,hikingfor16hoursadayandsleepingdirectlyon the trail.

•Daviswasaccompaniedbyherhusband,Ben,whoservedashersupportcrew.Shereachedthetrail’ssouthernendinSpringerMountain,Georgia,alittleover46daysaftershebegan.

•Waggonerfilmedoverthecourseoftwoyearswith his three co-producers. The four men explored in far-flung locations such as thejunglesalongtheAmazonRiver,theCordilleraBlanca,theAltiplanoandwindyPatagonia.

•Waggonerfilmedonfoot,onskis,onboats,onhorsebackandevenwhilesoaringthroughthesky on a paraglider. He faced tough weather conditions throughout without any of the comforts of normal travel. He and his group lived out of tents in driving rain and snow, occasionally for weeks at a time.

•The motley crew often hiked thousands ofmiles in darkness before dawn to capturesunrise in these unspoiled vistas. They scaled brokenglaciersinsearchofbreathtakingvistasand climbed mountains in excess of 17,000feet.

•WhenWaggonerarrivedinSouthAmericatostart production on the film, he was greetedwith terrible news. His close friend andintended star of the documentary, extreme skier Arne Backstrom, had fallen and died whileattempting to scale the 18,897-foot NevadoPisco.

•“Solitaire” is Waggoner’s third project withhis company, Sweetgrass Productions. Herecently spent a season in Hokkaido, Japan, filminganotherupcomingnaturedocumentary.His acclaimed work in just three years hasalready won him awards, most recently at the InternationalFreeskiFilmFestivalinMontreal,Canada.

adventure is a family affair. This past year the twobrotherscollectedsamplesof thehighestliving plant life on Earth. Samples weregatheredfromtheflanksofMt.Everest,over22,000 feet in the air.

•Willie and Damian delivered the collectedvegetation to the U.S. Geological Survey,as well as to researchers at Montana StateUniversity. These samples will be used tohelp scientists investigate how climate change might affect our food production in the future. ThebrothersalsobroughtbacksamplesofrocknearthesummitofEverestformicrobialstudy.It is hoped that these samples may provide insight into the effects of high levels of UV radiation on life at the microscopic level.

•65-year-old writer and Arctic explorer JohnTurk joined 26-year-old pro kayaker ErikBoomer in a 1,485-mile circumnavigation ofEllesmearIslandinCanada.ThiswasthelastgreatadventureforTurk,butitwasonlyoneofmany in a lifetime dedicated to rugged outdoor exploration.

• Prior tohisfinal tripwithBoomer,Turkhadcompleted a number of memorable climbsand has completed five separate Siberianexpeditions in an effort to study Shamanicculture.

•The trip required the two sportsmen to dragtheirkayaksacross800milesofflatice.Eachkayakwasover13feetlongandweighedover200pounds.TheybeganthetripinMay,whenicehadyettomeltcompletely,butwereabletofindpocketsofopenwaterafterthespringthaw.

•OfthemanydangersTurkandBoomerfaced,themost terrifyingwerefrequent interactionswith polar bears. They saw 11 on one dayalone, nine of which were aggressive.

Here are a few of the more interesting re-cent examples of our fellow explorers across the globe.•Alastair Humphreys of the United Kingdomhas ridden his bicycle over 46,000 miles invarious locales around the world. Humphreys didthisbeforehewas35yearsold.HehasalsocrossedIceland’sglacialhighlandsentirelyonfootand isplanningwhatwillbe the longestjourney to the South Pole ever attemptedwithout support.

•After travelling nearly everywhere on theglobe, Humphreys decided to see more ofthecountryofhisbirth.Hespentallof2011inGreatBritain.He completed an ambitiousgroup of “microadventures,” beginning andending these trips at the front door of his home outsideLondon.

•Among his explorations in 2011 was a hikeup theM25, thewell-known roadway that isnotorious for having the worst traffic in thecountry. He also swam the Thames River,familiarized himself with the UK’s publictransportation and spent several days living entirely off the land.

•Humphreysusedsocialmediatoencouragehisfellow adventurers to record video diaries of theirown“microadventures.”ThroughTwitter,hereceivedasurprisingnumberofresponses,some from as far away as Japan.

•AustrianmountaineerGerlindeKaltenbrunnerrecently became the only woman to summitall 14 of the peaks worldwide that measureover26,000feet(8,000m).Shecompletedthestaggeringfeatin2011,bestingtheK2neartheborderofChinaandPakistan.
