Cook This issue of Tidbits is not just about nosey neighbors or co-workers (but they will be mentioned…shhh! Don’t tell them!), but also about noses that are superior in sensing aromas. • There have been a number of television shows and movies that have featured nosey neighbors. Whether putting a glass against the wall to listen to voices in the next room or peeping through a keyhole, there are times when curiosity gets the best of a person and they just want to know what is going on! Examples of these “snoopy” tricks can be found in videos of I Love Lucy, Friends, Bewitched. • One of the main characters of the show, Bewitched, was Gladys Kravitz. She was constantly spying on her interesting neighbor, Samantha, who happened to be a witch. When the show was on television in the 1960s and had quite a following, many would refer to their nosey neighbors as having the “Gladys Kravitz syndrome!” • In case you are wondering, nosey can be spelled with or without the “e,” according to thefreedictionary.com. The Neatest Little Paper Ever Read.®

NOSEY (continued):• One such beast with an extraordinary sense of smell is the bear. A bear’s brain is only about a third of the size of a human brain but his nose is approximately five times larger; the nasal mucous membrane in a bear’s head is 100 times larger than the membrane in a human! Their nostrils have folds that house thousands of smell receptors making their sense of smell better than bloodhounds and possibly the best of any land animal. Bears use their sense of smell to find mates, identify their cubs, find food, and detect and avoid dangerous situations involving other bears or humans.• In California, a black bear was seen traveling upwind in a straight line for three miles to find a dead deer. Some studies have shown that a bear’s sense of smell is actually seven times better than a bloodhound’s. • Speaking of bloodhounds; they are possibly the best detectives known! Their sense of smell is so good that they beat the best man-made odor detecting machines. Even after several days of a person’s trail going through streets, shops and more, a bloodhound can still follow the scent. Some dogs have been trained to detect types of cancer with greater accuracy than very expensive screening equipment.• Detecting scents underwater is what a shark’s brain does well. Approximately two-thirds of a shark’s brain is focused on smell. They can detect a tiny drop of blood from more than a mile (1.6 km) away. They can even detect nervousness in other fish, which helps them find and destroy prey very easily.• In many instances humans have better recall of smells than visual recall. One study found a 65% accuracy for smell after a year, while visual recall of photos was below 50% after only three months.• Rats can be trained, like dogs, to use their extraordinary sense of smell to help humans in life-saving ways, one of which is to detect land mines. Rats can smell in stereo, with each of their nostrils working independently!• The advantage to using rats instead of dogs for this type of defense work is not just because of dogs’ reputation as “man’s best friend” and the close relationships handlers form with dogs but also because they are cheaper to keep and train. • Giant African pouched rats are used for mine detection by APOPO, an acronym from the Dutch language which means Anti=Persoonsmijnen Ontmijnende Product Ontwikkeling. In case you don’t speak Dutch, it is translated Anti-Personnel Landmines Detection Product Development. APOPO conducts research and “develops and disseminates detection rats technology for

humanitarian purposes.” It is a company registered in Belgium with headquarters in Tanzania. Their rats are called HeroRATs. • Three countries that have been helped with mine detection rats are Tanzania, Mozambique and Thailand. When the land is cleared of landmines, not only does it make an area safer for those living nearby but it also makes the land accessible for use and many times opens up water sources nearby as well. • HeroRATs are also trained for tubercolsis detection. Read about these super smellers at: http://apopo.org/home.php?lang=en.• On to a prettier animal – moths can sniff out a future mate in flight 6-7 miles (9-11 km) away. The feathery antennae allow this fine searching ability.• Snakes use their tongues in a flicking action not just to scare humans and animals, but to smell with. Snakes do have nostrils and nasal cavities but don’t use them to smell. • Most birds have keen eyesight but their sense of smell is lacking. The albatross is an exception. This large bird hovers above the water, usually an ocean, looking for its next meal. An albatross has an extra-large nose on top of its beak. The oversized honker helps an albatross detect food even in the dark. • People with oversized noses tend to have many critics. Some celebrities have actually become famous in part because of their noses. Many refer to their noses as a proboscis, a facetious use of the word that is defined as a trunk of an elephant or a long flexible snout, usually referring to animals. • Jimmy Durante was a very popular entertainer known for his jokes about his nose and a silly song he called Inka Dinka Do he recorded in 1934. A great piano player, jazz musician, band leader and one of the early stars of television, his nickname was Schnozzola, a name he coined himself for his large nose. • Bing Crosby called his friend and fellow comedian, Bob Hope, “Old Ski Nose.” Hope’s nose wasn’t especially big but was long and thin and had a bit of a curve up. Many caricatures were drawn of the comic’s nose. Hope joked about his nose saying that “my nose came on screen 10 minutes before the rest of my face.”• Another large-nosed entertainer was Danny Thomas. He was the star of Make Room for Daddy, a popular television comedy from 1953-64. He left an honorable legacy by founding the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in 1962. ■

The 565 acre (228 ha) estate has three showcase areas with a beautiful rose garden as one of the three. In the early days of the estate 100 gardeners were employed to tend the grounds. • The largest rose garden in Asia is in the “garden city” of Chandigarh, India. An annual rose festival is held at Dr. Zakir Hussain Rose Garden where more than 2,000 varieties of roses and 50,000 rose trees bloom annually. It covers 30 acres (12 ha).• Empress Josephine of France created the rose garden of her dreams in 18th century France. She was the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte and her real name was actually “Rose.” Josephine purchased the Château de Malmaison in 1799. The home and grounds changed hands many times but were donated to the state in 1906. It is now one of the many historical museums in Paris.• The oldest municipal rose garden in the United States is Elizabeth Park in West Hartford, Connecticut. Only two and a half acres (1 ha), there are about 15,000 roses of approximately 800 varieties. • Portland, Oregon is the home of the “oldest official continuously operated public rose test garden in the United States.” The International Rose Test Garden was founded in 1917. Portland is also the “City of Roses” and has been hosting the Portland Rose Festival for 105 years!• Whether you live near or far from roses and rose gardens, take some time to appreciate the sights and smells of beauty around you! ■

SMELL THE ROSES When you stop to “smell the roses,” you are taking the time to enjoy life. This term, an idiom, is one which many of us should stop to consider in this age where information is available instantly with the push of a few computer keys or a smartphone application and we stay too busy and too connected!• Roses have been popular for their beauty and scents for thousands of years. Historical evidence has shown that cultivation of roses most likely started in China. • According to “The Ultimate Rose Bush.” There are three groups of roses: wild roses, old garden roses recognized and established before 1867, and hybrid or modern roses. Hybrids are created when two roses are cultivated to create a new variety or breed. Most new hybrids are bred to create great scents or for blooms that are longer lasting.• With the popularity of rose scents, it is no wonder that an idiom for slowing down in life was spoken many years ago. Rose gardens are great places to relax and reflect.• The White House Rose Garden is quite possibly the most photographed rose garden in the world. President John F. Kennedy started the tradition of holding ceremonies and media events in the garden close to the Oval Office in Washington, D.C. Roses were first planted there in 1913. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation naming the rose as the official National Floral Emblem of America. • Victoria, British Columbia, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, on the western coast of Canada, is known as the City of Gardens. Not only does Victoria boast the presence of the beautiful Butchart Gardens, a National Historic Site, but it is also home to Hatley Park. Both have exquisite rose gardens.• Butchart Gardens has 55 acres (22 ha) of flowers with a rose garden among them. The rose garden was first planted in 1922. • Hatley Park, with landscaping design dating back to 1912, is home to Royal Roads University.

Lack of energy, hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, depression, trouble losing weight, waking up in the middle of the night between 2 AM and 4 AM, a racing mind, lack of focus and concentration… these could all be symptoms of hormonal imbalance that can be adequately supported with the power of nutrition.

As a culture we are becoming hormonally exhausted earlier than ever, and only replenishing hormones is often just a bandage. There is a deeper structure of support the body needs to “hold the hormones in place,” and allow the body to work more efficiently on its own. This is often addressed through the power of nutrition and lifestyle activities such as relaxation techniques.

How Can Nutrition Affect My Hormones?

Nutritional soundness includes all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants our bodies need for proper activities to happen, such as communication of hormones. These nutrients come from the diets we eat and supplements we take.

An example of this would be someone with low thyroid. Sure we can add a thyroid hormone, but what if they are low in iodine, selenium, and zinc, all important nutrients for thyroid creation and activity?

There are also the natural supplements, which support certain body and hormonal systems, as well as help us to find a natural balance to allow our hormonal system to work more efficiently. This is something that I see all the time, and it all relates to stress. In the future I will speak more on this because it’s very important. The thing we need to realize is the power of one’s adrenal glands, the roles they play, and how little attention they are given in our overall health.

Cortisol is a common marker of adrenal activity. When we undergo stress, our body releases more and more cortisol to help deal with the stress; to keep us alert, with adequate energy to respond. The problem is that over time, our adrenal hormones become exhausted. Along the way, the body does its best to keep adequate cortisol levels to the point it will steal from other hormones like progesterone since they all are made of similar material.

For a woman who is still cycling, her progesterone levels begin to rise around mid month of cycle. Progesterone stays high till the end of the month then suddenly drops to trigger the next cycle. If cortisol is stealing from progesterone the woman might experience symptoms such as irregular cycles, PMS, problems with endometriosis and estrogen dominance, thyroid problems and even infertility. The reason for the low progesterone, the stress, can be easily balanced with the right nutrition and lifestyle guidance.

Here’s another example. Naturally, cortisol levels should be higher in the morning and gradually decline as the day goes on, allowing us to fall into a silent, uninterrupted sleep. People often experience rising cortisol levels or cortisol spikes at nighttime. This results in waking up in the middle of the night for no apparent reason and eventually staying awake due to a mind that won’t slow down.

There is a lot that can be done with the right supple-mentation and the right questions. If any of this sounds remotely familiar, contact our pharmacy; let’s see how we can help. (248) 663-3390.

Ask Your Periodontist: Dr. Steve WolfDear Dr. Wolf: Can the bacteria in my mouth get into my body? -- Marcus K., Southfield MI

A recent study in the journal “Molecular biology” showed that a certain bacteria called F. Nucleatum, can invade our body through breaks in mucous membranes and through periodontal or “gum” disease. It attaches to small blood vessels and can cause it to open its doors allowing it and other bacteria to colonize at different sites throughout the body. A simple test of your saliva can determine the presence and amount of this and many other types of bacteria in your mouth. Contact our office for more information.

eXPerTWhat is a home health agency?

Answer: Home Health Agencies can come in many different shapes and sizes. There are certified agencies (like Interim) that have a specific set of guidelines they must follow and are governed by CMS (The Federal Government), and or by an accrediting body (CHAP, ACHC, JHACO, or by their State). Michigan is a non licensed state meaning that there is no license necessary to open and run a home health agency.

There are also non certified agencies that provide care on a non certified basis (Not certified through the government or an accrediting body). These agencies are usually smaller and often only provide non skilled (No Nursing or Therapy) services.

Teeth GrindingDear Dr. Abdal: A few years ago my old dentist told me that I was grinding my teeth and were at risk for something called TMJ. Can you explain to me what is TMJ is and what are the risks? -- Sharon P., Farmington, MI

Answer: Grinding is when you slide your teeth over each other in a back and forth, sideways movement. When you grind you teeth you can cause pressure on the muscles, tissues, and other surrounding structures of the jaw, In addition grinding your teeth can lead too jaw joint disorders, headaches, neck pain, jaw pain, ear pain, tense muscles, and excessive wear down your teeth. Collectively, these symptoms are referred to as “TMJ”. Often the grinding is a subconscious behavior that most people do not realize that they are doing it. TMJ can cause damage to the temporomandibular joint which is the hinge that connects the lower jaw to the upper jaw. The cause of this disorder is not completely known, but many agree that stress and anxiety play a major role.

PRENUPTUAL Q & A'sQ: What are the benefits of a prenuptial agreement?A: The benefits of a prenuptial agreement cannot be overstated. Marriage is a legal communion of property. If the marriage ends, deciding how to distribute property is often the biggest source of conflict for couples. Prenuptial agreements minimize such difficulties by:1. Documenting each spouse’s separate property to keep it separate 2. Avoiding court involvement and the potential for a judge to decide on property distribution 3. Avoiding extended court proceedings, which invariably include divorce attorneys who charge an average of $200 per hour 4. Assigning debt (credit cards, school loans, mortgages) to the appropriate spouse, so both spouses don’t share debt liability.

Why Do We Fail in Our Exercise Programs? There is a saying that states “those who fail to plan, plan to fail”. This holds true for our exercise programs as well. Many people who are engaged in an exercise program or just getting started with a program have not clearly developed a plan for success. Below I have outlined a few check points you should consider before starting an exercise program. • What is your motivation for starting an exercise program, once you answer this question set a goal with a goal date?• Start your exercise program at a level that is appropriate for you. • Do you have any injuries or problems that may get aggravated due to your exercise program?• Make exercise a priority, and make sure you dedicate time in your schedule for exercise. Your exercise appointment should be one of the most important events of your day.• Find exercises or an exercise program that you enjoy. If running is not your thing, try group fitness classes, or something that will keep you motivated.• Find a way to stay accountable to your exercise program. Goals with completion dates are one way to help stay accountable. Keep a log or diary of what you are doing. • Find a workout partner, a qualified trainer, or a program that will keep you engaged and motivated. • If you are not a morning person don’t work out in the mornings. If you have a lot going on in the evenings do not work out in the evenings. Remember we are planning for success; make exercise as easy and convenient as possible.• Be consistent, remain positive, and stay the course. You can be successful with your exercise program if you do a little pre-planning….so plan to succeed!

Dear Dr. Donohue: My son, 57, salts most every food in his diet. He told me that his doctor said, “Eat all the salt you want.” I looked him in the eye, and it was hard not to believe him. I did say I found it hard to believe. My son gets regular checkups every five years. Personally, there’s no salt on my table. I eat very little processed foods. Please set my son straight. --P.

Answer: Most doctors for most of the recent past have told their patients to go easy on salt. Official medical advisory committees composed of the most knowledgeable scientists -- The American Heart Association is one example -- have and still do recommend that our intake of salt (sodium) should be limited to 1,500 mg a day. In some instances, an intake of 2,300 mg is permitted. This is far lower than our present salt use. Most of our dietary salt comes from processed foods like pizza, meats such as corned beef (500 mg of sodium in two ounces), hot dogs (more than 500 mg of sodium in one hot dog), commercial soups, frozen dinners, breakfast cereals, some breads and baked goods. People have to become readers of the nutrition labels put on all foods.Reducing the intake of sodium lowers blood pressure and reduces the chances for a heart attack and stroke.I have to add that a few voices have been raised recently to champion diets with no limitations on the amount of salt. These researchers say that low-salt diets are not healthy. I am sticking with the authorities who recommend salt reduction until the majority of nutritional experts change their minds. I don’t think that’s going to happen. You sent a little item on potassium. Potassium, unlike sodium, lowers blood pressure. We’re told to get 4,700 mg of it a day. It’s found in baked

potatoes with skins, sweet potatoes, bananas, orange juice, milk, kidney beans, cantaloupe, avocado and prunes. Salt substitutes are usually potassium. They can be used by most people if they’re not taking blood pressure drugs like ACE inhibitors and ARBs, angiotensin-receptor blockers. The booklet on sodium and potassium discusses these two minerals and their uses. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 202W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.Dear Dr. Donohue: In a prior column you advocated drinking a daily amount of water that would satisfy one’s thirst, not a set amount of water as some people believe. I agree with you. However, when I travel to Colorado, I am urged to drink glass after glass of water to allay the effects of altitude. Do you think this is valid advice? -- D.K.

Answer: I do. Mountain air is dry. Altitude makes a person breathe more rapidly than normal. Fluid is lost from the lungs when a person breathes fast. You can become dehydrated if you don’t increase your fluid intake. After a few days of acclimatization, you can ease off on your water intake.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Dog Scratches Herself RawBy Sam Mazzotta

Dear Paw's Corner: My mother’s dog “Berry” has been scratching and itching at her back legs and stomach for weeks now. I put a monthly flea treatment on her regularly, and I can’t see any fleas. Why is she itching? Some of the areas are looking very raw. --Barbara in Tampa, Fla.

Dear Barbara: Topical flea treatments are pretty effective for pets, but double-check that Berry does not have fleas. Rather than trying to spot the fast-moving critters, look for tiny flecks of brown-black “dust” in her fur or on her skin. These are flea droppings, and seeing them means there’s still an infestation. If you spot evidence of fleas, find out what dosage of the topical flea treatment is being given. These are typically sold in packages that specify the type of pet (cat or dog) and its weight range. Large dogs need a different dose than small dogs or cats.If there is no evidence of fleas, or if Berry is getting the correct dosage for her weight, take her to the veterinarian for a closer look at her skin. She may have an allergy -- either to something in her environment, to a medication she’s taking, or to a food she’s eating. She could have a parasitic infection other than fleas, or she could have another skin ailment. Her vet can check for a number of possibilities, and can prescribe medication to ease the itching. Treatment might include cortisone, which should be used for only a limited time, if possible.

Send your questions or tips to [email protected], or write to Paw's Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. For more pet care-related advice and information, visit www.pawscorner.com.(c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: A while back you mentioned that Tyler Perry had a new movie coming out called “We the Peeples,” but I’ve seen neither hide nor hair of it. Is it still being released? --Sherri W., via e-mail

A: May 10 is the day that “We the Peeples” will see the light of day. The movie stars Craig Robinson (“The Office”), Kerry Washington (“Scandal”) and Kali Hawk (“Bridesmaids” and “New Girl”) among many others in this large ensemble cast.I spoke with Kali about the movie, and she told me a bit about it: “It’s about a family, and our last name is Peeples. It’s kind of like ‘Meet the Parents.’ Kerry Washington, who plays my sister, is dating Craig Robinson, and she brings him home to meet the family. Our family is very uppity, very wealthy and very strict. We have our certain way of doing things, with our dad at the helm -- played by David Alan Grier -- who rules with an iron fist.“It’s not really clear if Craig’s character can ever fit in with the Peeples family. But he definitely gets an A-plus for effort throughout the film. He shows us a few things about ourselves that we needed to take a look at. That’s where a lot of the comedy comes in: Whenever you try to pinpoint people with a little bit of truth, if they’re not prepared for it, look out.

Q: I heard that one of my favorite TV shows, “Veronica Mars,” is coming back to television. Is that true? --Elaine Y., Mobile, Ala.

A: “Veronica Mars” has indeed been resurrected, but as a feature film. In an unprecedented Kickstarter campaign (kickstarter.com is a fundraising website where you can set up a “cause” for which you need money, and people can donate to help you raise the funds), “Veronica Mars” creator Rob Thomas raised the $2 million needed for the film in approximately 11 hours! Because of the loyalty and passion of fans of the show, Kristen Bell and company will return to the big screen, as Veronica comes back to town for her 10-year high-school reunion.Q: When will “Awkward” be back on MTV? -- Janie G., via e-mailA: Both of the previous seasons of the hit MTV teen comedy began in summer, but because of season three’s extended season, Jenna,

Matty, Jake, Tamara and the rest of the crew will return a little earlier this year. “Awkward” premieres Tuesday, April 16, at 10 p.m. ET/PT with two back-to-back new episodes.

READERS: In concert with the recent trend of uncanceling previously canceled television shows, Lifetime has decided to renew “Drop Dead Diva” for a fifth season after all. The show’s producers had to do some “creative financing” with the network to make this next season happen, but creator Josh Berman insists viewers will not be cheated on content, story or characters because of this.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Rumors of a change in the workplace could make you a mite uneasy about going ahead with implementing your ideas. Best advice: Ignore the talk and proceed as planned.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Everyone has an opinion on how to handle a recent business suggestion. Thank them for their advice. Then go ahead and follow your own fine instincts.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While home is your main focus this week, new issues in the workplace need your attention as well. Take things step by step. Pressures ease in time for weekend fun.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be less rigid when handling a relationship problem. You might believe you’re in the right, but try to open your mind to the possibilities of facts you’re currently not aware of.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) A suggestion from a colleague could give your professional project that long-needed boost. Meanwhile, someone close to you still needs your emotional support.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Change is favored early in the week. This should make it easier for you to reassess your plans for handling a troubling professional relationship. Good luck.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A suggestion from a colleague could give your professional project that long-needed boost. Meanwhile, someone close to you still needs your emotional support.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before complying with a colleague’s request, check to see that the action benefits all, not just one person’s agenda. Continue firming up those travel plans.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your social life is on the upswing, and the only problem is deciding which invitations to accept. Enjoy yourself before settling down for some serious work next week.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) With your creative aspects on high, you might want to restart your work on that novel or painting you put aside. Your efforts will bring a surge in your self-esteem.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) While you’re generous with others, be sure you’re not overlooking your own needs. Take time to assess your situation and make adjustments where necessary.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Being applauded for your achievement is great. But watch out that you don’t start acting like a star. It could lose your valuable support with your next project.

BORN THIS WEEK: Your strong belief in justice, along with your leadership qualities, help you protect the rights of others.

Dear Varsity Lincoln: Of the hybrids available in the luxury market, what is special about the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid from others? - Max K, Wixom, MI

Answer: A hybrid, for the select few who appreciate it. And…no additional cost. This is indeed a rare sight: At 45 mpg city/45 hwy, it’s America’s single most fuel-efficient luxury vehicle1. The all-new 2013 MKZ Hybrid uses a new state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery for more power and less weight. In electric mode, it can run up to 62 mph. The new 2.0L Atkinson-cycle I-4 engine and electric traction motor recharge the battery while you drive. To help you get the highest fuel economy, the unique SmartGuage® with EcoGuide instrument cluster coaches you. Its vibrant vine graphics grow more lush, blooming with white apple blossoms, the more efficiently you drive. Lincoln MKZ Hybrid doesn’t have a price premium. Competitors like Lexus charge extra for their hybrid models. The 2013 Lexus ES 300h, for example, is a $2,750 additional cost over the 2013 Lexus ES 350. INSURANCE NEEDS?Q: Is it true that most car accidents happen in the snow? -Allison T., Novi, MI

A: NO! As the warm weather approaches and the sun comes out to greet us... Pay extra attention while driving. More car accidents actually occur on nice, sunny days. Remember to always leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you. Do not be distracted from eating, putting on make up, talking on the phone or texting! Texting while driving accidents and fatalities are increasing so rapidly that they are expected to surpass drinking and driving accidents. Reading a text or sending one sentence is equivalent to the driver taking his/her eyes off the road for the entire length of a football field! Please - adopt safe driving habits and encourage those who you see not being safe to try to change their bad habits!

Did you know....One of the least expensive and biggest tax deductions for the average American is owning a small business, even if you don’t own a home. Most working Americans lose between 40-50 percent of their paycheck to city, state, federal income tax, social security and Medicare taxes. What if you were allowed to legally treat a portion of the home where you live like a office building and write it off, and what if I told you that you could convert some of the expenses that you are paying for already into deductible legal business expenses, do you think that would make a difference in the tax that you pay? You bet it will; the average taxpayer can save about $5000 or more just from starting a small business today. Want to learn how to apply these strategies? Call Aaron Sanders former IRS employee and President of Key Financial Services, LLC at: 248-569-9268, email me at [email protected].

Over the past two years, the Postal Service has made numerous changes to try to bring down its operating costs. Hours have been cut at smaller post offices, staff has been reduced, and some post offices have closed completely. In spite of these cost reductions, the price of a stamp has been raised to 46 cents.

If you haven’t used online bill payment in the past, this might be the time to investigate how it’s done and calculate your monthly savings.

If you’re printing out a multi-page document to mail, consider reducing the number of pages by expanding the margins slightly so

To cut back on revenue losses, after weighing the pros and cons for years, the Postal Service will no longer deliver mail on Saturdays starting in August 2013. They expect to save $2 billion of the nearly $16 billion losses from last year.

Here are the ways it will affect us:--No mail will be delivered to street addresses on Saturdays.--Packages, however, will continue to be delivered six days a week. This is due to an increase in package volume, likely because of online purchases.--Packages and mail will continue to be delivered to post office boxes on Saturdays.--Post offices will stay open on Saturdays, if they currently do.

Consumers will need to change their habits. Birthday cards expected to arrive on Saturday

Listen for the next increase in the cost of stamps and stock up before the change goes into effect. Invest in postcards for short messages. If you send quite a few packages, investigate Click-N-Ship and save up to 16 percent by weighing your own packages, printing your labels and paying with a credit card or PayPal.

The U.S. won’t be alone in this change. Canada, Sweden and Australia already deliver five days a week.

Answer: The website you will want to go to is www.AnnualCreditReport.com. This central site allows you to request a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Tip: Don’t request all 3 reports at once. Instead, request a report from one company every 4 months. Rotating this way provides a free tool for monitoring your credit.

Dear Robert: What is titanium and why might it be a good choice for my husband’s wedding band? -- Daniella U., West Bloomfield, MI

Answer: Titanium is a light, strong, and corrosion-resistant metal. Titanium offers you seven times the strength of platinum at about 1/3 of the weight. It is the hardest natural metal on earth and therefore offers more scratch resistance than gold or silver. Titanium as a material is nickel free, which makes it hypoallergenic and safe alternative for people that have allergies to other metals. When ordering titanium rings, be extra sure about your ring size. The biggest drawback of titanium rings is that they cannot be sized by traditional ring sizing methods. I you are considering purchasing a ring or any piece of jewelry please come by our store and our trained jewelers can consult with you about what materials would be best for you. Start Planning Now for Warmer Weather

It was a bad winter in many parts of the country. Flooding, snow, storms -- we’ve had it all. But spring and summer are coming! We need to start planning now to take advantage of all the warmer weather we’ll get.

Are you a gardener? Whether you plant flowers in pots outside your door, or have a full garden in the yard, or grow vegetables in the community garden, now is the time to start planning. Check your local area for

gardening classes, even if your efforts are going to be on the small scale. If you have a plot in a community garden, it often will have classes to let you know the condition of the soil this year and what additives you’ll need to apply. Those classes are where you’ll find willing volunteers to help with weeding as the season goes on, if you can’t do it all yourself.

If you’re going to want to join a walking group, investigate now. In some areas, senior centers host walking tours around town or through the woods. For daily exercise, talk with neighbors and friends to see what you can put together. Check your gear: Are your walking shoes good for another year? Do you have a hat and sunglasses?

Once you get a group together, brainstorm for additional activities you can do. Once-a-week croquet in the park? Bowling? Berry picking? Painting birdhouses for the land trust? Baking pies for the food bank?

If you live in a college town, all those students

will go home for the summer and leave many of their volunteer tasks undone. Where can you pitch in?

Enjoy your planning!

HOW DO I MAINTAIN MYGARAGE DOOR?

You should lubricate the hinges, rollers andbearings using a light weight oil in an aerosolspray. Use a product that has teflon in it andstay away from the WD-40. WD-40 is a greatdegreaser but provides very little lubricatingvalue. Never use grease as it will collect and hold dirt and that in turn will place excessive ware on the doors hardware.

Which Is Better Aluminum or Vinyl Siding?

Answer: Vinyl Siding can be more cost effective with a wider variety of colors. Aluminum siding is more durable than vinyl, however if something hit aluminum siding you normally are left with a big ding in the siding. Vinyl siding for the most part will not ding unless hit with large hail or golf balls in which case the product will crack or shatter. ROOFING ▪ SIDING ▪ WINDOWS ▪ DOORS

Answer: There are three energy performance ratings for glass that matter.U-Factor indicates how well a product prevents heat from escaping. The lower the number the better.Solar Heat Gain Coefficient measures how well a product blocks heat caused by sunlight. Ask Your PAINTING

EXPERTJames Kern

Dear James: How Should I Choose A Painting Contractor?-- Ashleigh E, Farmington Hills, MI

Answer: Painting a house is not easy: it requires physical labor, many hours of time, and climbing high on ladders. To do it right, one needs the right tools, workers, and an understanding of different products, surfaces, and techniques. It may seem difficult to find the right contractor for the job, but using the following steps, you can make the best decision.Talk to your friends, family, and co-workers and reference online sources, including Angie’s List. Look at the reviews of contractors and pick out ones that seem like a good fit for your needs. If you can, talk with customers to find out how the painter responded to the customer’s needs and requests. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! For example, did the painters show up on the date and time they said they would? If there was a change, did the contractor communicate effectively with the homeowner? Did the contractor properly prepare the surface before painting? (This includes scraping, patching, caulking, and priming). Did the painters keep a clean jobsite? Was the homeowner happy with the end result? When the salesperson arrives, ask how long the company has been in business and what their personal experience they have in the industry. Make sure to take note of your interactions. Were they courteous and on time? Did they rush the visit or take the necessary time to inspect the project area(s)? Did they mention any potential problem areas and make suggestions as to the type of products that would work best? After your questions have been answered, ask for references from similar projects. Additionally, make sure that the contractor gives you an exact price for the work so that there are no additional costs. You should ask for proof that they are fully licensed and insured, and, if applicable, have lead certification. Lastly, make sure that a specific time frame is set so that you can fit the project into your schedule and are not left wondering when your painters will arrive.I wish you luck with your painting project and I hope this article has helped!

Contractor Help

Ask YourProperty Managerorchard10.com

Question: Why you shouldn’t manage your own properties? --Allan L., Walled Lake, MI

Answer: If you have one or two rental houses, it probably doesn’t pay to have a property manager (or management company). However, once you reach the threshold of 10 properties, property management will increasingly impinge on your time and your ability to enjoy life. It’s better to pick and choose the jobs you like regarding your properties. For example, if you like to do the bookkeeping or the plumbing, you can have a management company handle the rest.

Tenants have rights which need to be respected, and property managers know the right way to deal with tenants and the problems that are involved in dealing with tenants, the properties, and the contractors. Owning property is a great way to make income. You get the tax benefits of being a landlord and the pleasure of having your own business, but managing property can be a dicey and complicated endeavor that is best left to the professionals.

Two locations to serve you!

Dear Robert: What is a survey and why do I need one?

-- Jacob R., Novi, MI

Answer: In real estate, a land or property survey is basically a sketch of the land showing the relative placement of the home, garage, shed or out buildings, concrete drive and walkways, fencing, etc and how they are all situated on that land. A survey will indicate any easements (to the City or utility companies), and usually the distance between the subject and neighboring properties. Most lenders and title insurers require a recent land survey (within the past 3-6 months) to give everyone a clear picture of exactly what is being purchased and that there are no “encroachments” on the land. Many cities require new surveys when there are changes to the property such as room additions, new fences, driveways, garages, etc. While some property surveys can be very complicated—and expensive, especially if they involve acreage or irregular lots, currently, mortgage surveys for a regular city lot are reasonably priced !If you’re thinking of making a move, we’d be happy to assist YOU !
