His father built an ice rink in the back yard every winter. He grew up watching “Hockey Night in Canada” and by the age of two, he was trying to score goals against his sister using a miniature souvenir stick. His father started drilling him, making him skate around bleach bottles and tin cans, flipping pucks over the top of hockey sticks laying on the ice, and picking up the puck in full flight. • He joined his first team when he was only six, while the rest of the players were ten. Because the team sweater was too big for him, he tucked the corner into his pants, a habit he kept up for the rest of his career. • By the age of ten, Gretzky had scored 378 goals and 139 assists in just a single season with the Brantford Nadrofsky Steelers. When asked how he managed, at age ten, to score so many goals in a single season, Gretzky explained, “See, kids usually don’t start playing hockey until they’re six or seven. Ice isn’t grass. It’s a whole new surface and everybody starts from ground zero… By the time I was ten, I had eight years on skates instead of four, and a few seasons worth of ice time against ten-year-olds. So I had a long head start on everyone else.” turn the page for more!

TIDBITS® LOOKS AT

WAYNE GRETZKYby Janet Spencer

• Wayne Gretzky was born in Ontario in 1961. His father built an ice rink in the back yard every winter. He grew up watching “Hockey Night in Canada” and by the age of two, he was trying to score goals against his sister using a miniature souvenir stick. His father started drilling him, making him skate around bleach bottles and tin cans, flipping pucks over the top of hockey sticks laying on the ice, and picking up the puck in full flight.• He joined his first team when he was only six, while the rest of the players were ten. Because the team sweater was too big for him, he tucked the corner into his pants, a habit he kept up for the rest of his career. • By the age of ten, Gretzky had scored 378 goals and 139 assists in just a single season with the Brantford Nadrofsky Steelers. Q: I love MTV’s original comedy “Awkward.” I missed some episodes of season two. Is it on DVD yet? Also, where there be a third season? A: You’re in luck on both counts. Aside from being able to watch full episodes on hulu.com and mtv.com, seasons one and two are available on DVD. The show has been granted a super-size season three, which will consist of 20 episodes instead of the previous 12 episodes each of the previous two seasons. Look for season three to premiere in summer 2013.

***Q: I just heard about the death of one of my favorite directors, Tony Scott. I couldn’t find any information on the definite cause or reason for his death. Do you know what happened? -- Felix S., Vancouver, British ColumbiaA: The results of Tony’s autopsy were recently released, with the cause of death being multiple blunt-force injuries, which were sustained when he jumped off a Los Angeles bridge on Aug. 19. The official ruling is suicide, as no foul play was suspected or discovered. There was also no evidence of an inoperable brain tumor -- as some sources were citing as the reason he killed himself -- putting to rest those rumors that his family vehemently denied from the get-go.Tony, who was 68 at the time of his death, had recently announced his intent

to develop a “Top Gun” sequel, and was with Tom Cruise just days prior to his death scouting locations for the movie. There is no word yet on whether the movie will be made without Tony.

***Q: “Assassin’s Creed” is one of my favorite video games, and my roommate heard that it’s going to be made into a movie. Is that true? -- Douglas W., via e-mailA: Development of a big-screen version of the popular video game is moving forward, with Michael Fassbender set to star as Desmond Miles, a man who comes from a long line of assassins but tries to lie low and maintain a more common lifestyle as a bartender. Since it’s still early in the development process, there’s no word on co-stars or a release date. However, I can tell you that it will be shot in 3-D.

***Q: My husband and I are curious as to what happened to Lisa, who was one of the “Ice Road Truckers” on the History Channel last year. We’re hoping she didn’t crash. -- Bonnie and George H., via e-mailA: Lisa Kelly is alive and well, and taking a year off. Producer Thom Beers told a group of reporters: “We offered her a contract to return, and she chose not to. (We’d) love to have her, (but) she’s taking a year off. The thing we liked about her more than anyone else -- she’s the one person of them all who showed real fear. I wish her luck, and I wish she was back.”

◆ Medication labels can fade, so when you get yours, put a piece of clear tape over the instructions. This way, you’ll always be able to read the instructions.

◆ “During the holidays (the height of baking season for me), I keep a large plastic saltshaker filled with flour and a bit of dry rice. The rice helps the flour to shake out without getting clumped up, and I use it to dust cake pans, rolling pins, kneading boards, etc.” -- W.F. in Canada

◆ “One of the household cleaners I prefer comes in a spray bottle, and it’s on the expensive side. I make sure to get all of the liquid out by adding some regular glass marbles to the bottle. The marbles displace the liquid, ensuring it finds the bottom of the sprayer’s suction tube.” -- T.H. in Mississippi

◆ “Stack hockey pucks in the holes of a cardboard soda six-pack carrier. Tell your coach. And to keep them bouncy, store them in your freezer (as long as your mom says it’s OK).” -- Eric, via e-mail

◆ Keep the fog off your glasses by cleaning them with shaving cream. It will prevent mist-ups when you come in from the cold.

◆ Save your citrus peels and dry them to use for kindling in your fire. They contain flammable oils, and they smell pretty good, too.

WAYNE GRETZKY (continued):• By 13, he’d scored over 1,000 goals. His skill began to attract positive attention from the media, and negative attention from other players and their parents. When he was 14, his parents sent him to Toronto where he played for the Greyhounds in the Ontario Hockey League. • He wanted to wear the number 9 on his jersey because he was a big fan of Gordie Howe and that was Howe’s number, but a teammate had already claimed it. Instead, Gretzky chose number 99, the number he bore for the rest of his career.• At 16, in his single year at the major junior level, Gretzky surpassed the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League single-season scoring record, winning the OMJHL Rookie of the Year and Most Sportsmanlike awards.BIG LEAGUES• In 1978, Wayne signed with the World Hockey Association, which competed directly with the NHL. The NHL would not sign anyone under the age of 20, but the WHA had no such rule. He played for the Indianapolis Racers, signing a contract worth $1.75 million at the age of 17. Gretzky scored his first professional goal against Dave Dryden of the Edmonton Oilers in his fifth game, and his second goal four seconds later. He played only eight games for Indianapolis; the team folded and Gretzky joined the Edmonton Oilers under Peter Pocklington. • On his 18th birthday in 1979, he signed a ten-year personal services contract with the Oilers, which was the longest in hockey history at the time. It was worth $3 million. The Oilers finished first in their league that year and Gretzky won the Lou Kaplan Trophy as rookie of the year.• When the WHA folded in 1979, the Oilers joined the NHL. Many thought Gretzky would falter, playing against tougher opponents. However, in his first NHL season, Gretzky won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the Leagues’s Most Valuable Player—the first of eight in a row—and he tied for scoring with 137 points. In his second season, he won the Art Ross trophy (the first of seven consecutive), scoring a record 164 points. During his third season, he broke a record that had stood for 35 years, scoring 50 goals in 50 games, accomplishing the feat in only 39 games. Later that same season he also broke

◆ It was Scotsman Bertie Charles Forbes, journalist and founder of Forbes magazine, who made the following sage observation: “There is more credit and satisfaction in being a first-rate truck driver than in being a tenth-rate executive.”

◆ The prospectors of 1849 might not have realized it, but you’re more likely to find a 5-carat diamond than a 1-ounce nugget of gold.

◆ You might be surprised -- and, depending on your temperament, terrified -- to learn that bats can fly at speeds up to 60 mph. Some can even reach altitudes of 10,000 feet.

◆ Coffee beans are actually seeds. The fruit of the coffee tree is called a cherry and are said to be delicious. They spoil too quickly to be marketed effectively, though, so only the seeds are used.

◆ Beverly Hills, Calif., is one of the most affluent areas of the country. It was not always such a posh locale, however; in 1920 the population was 674, and most of the land was given over to bean fields.

◆ All joking aside, those who study such things say that natural blondes tend to have more difficulty driving than those whose hair is of a darker hue -- at night, anyway. The reason? Most natural blondes also have blue eyes, which aren’t as good as brown eyes at shielding out light. This means that blondes tend to be more easily blinded by the headlights of oncoming cars.

◆ When a professional football player retires, there’s a 50-50 chance he’ll get divorced within a year.

→ On Nov. 12, 1864, Union Gen. William T. Sherman orders the business district of Atlanta destroyed before he embarks on his famous March to the Sea through Georgia to prevent the Confederates from recovering anything once the Yankees had abandoned it.

→ On Nov. 16, 1901, a low-slung car called the “Torpedo Racer” -- basically a square platform on bicycle wheels -- breaks the world speed record for electric cars in Coney Island, N.Y., by going 1 mile down the straight dirt track in just 63 seconds. That’s about 57 mph. Today the world speed record for an electric vehicle is about 245 mph.

→ On Nov. 14, 1914, in Constantinople, capital of the Ottoman Empire, the religious leader Sheikh-ul-Islam declares an Islamic holy war on behalf of the Ottoman government, urging his Muslim followers to take up arms against Britain, France, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro.

→ On Nov. 15, 1943, Heinrich Himmler makes public an order that Gypsies are to be put on “the same level as Jews and placed in concentration camps.” Himmler was determined to prosecute Nazism racial policies, which dictated the elimination of all races deemed “inferior” and “asocial.”

→ On Nov. 13, 1953, a member of the Indiana Textbook Commission calls for the removal of references to the book “Robin Hood” from textbooks used by the state’s schools. She claimed that Robin Hood was a communist because he robbed the rich and gave it to the poor.

→ On Nov. 17, 1968, the Oakland Raiders score two touchdowns in nine seconds to beat the New York Jets -- and no one sees it. In a debacle which would become known as “Heidi Bowl,” with just 65 seconds left to play, NBC broke away from the game to air its previously scheduled programming, the movie “Heidi.”

the record for most goals in a single season with 92, and was named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year. By the time he finished playing for Edmonton, he held or shared 49 NHL records, which in itself was a record.• In 1988, Pocklington traded Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings. This upset Canadians so much that demands were made to have the government block the trade, and Pocklington was burned in effigy. Gretzky feared Canadians would hold the trade against him, but in his first appearance in Edmonton after the trade, he received a four-minute standing ovation in a sold-out arena. Following the game, Gretzky declared his patriotism: “I’m still proud to be a Canadian. I didn’t desert my country. I moved because I was traded and that’s where my job is. But I’m Canadian to the core. I hope Canadians understand that.”• After the 1988–89 season, a life-sized bronze statue of Gretzky was erected outside the Northlands Coliseum, holding the Stanley Cup over his head.• He played for the St. Louis Blues for a single year before going to the New York Rangers for the final three years of his career.• The final game of Gretzky’s career was a 2-1 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Madison Square Garden in April of 1999. The national anthems in that game were adjusted to commemorate his departure. In place of the lyrics “O Canada, we stand on guard for thee,” Bryan Adams instead sang, “We’re going to miss you, Wayne Gretzky.” The Star-Spangled Banner, as sung by John Amirante, was changed to include the words “in the land of Wayne Gretzky.”

Remembering to say thanks(NC)—When you think of Canada’s multicultural society and all the freedoms and opportunities that we experience on a daily basis, devoting a few minutes of silence on Remembrance Day to think of our troops is an important and meaningful gesture. Our soldiers and veterans sacrificed their time, personal comforts, and in many cases their lives so we could enjoy ours. Here are some other ways that you can show gratitude:

Wear a poppy. From the last Friday in October to November 11, pin a poppy on the left lapel of your garment or as close to the heart as possible. This will publicly remind you of our soldiers’ sacrifices and will encourage others to do the same.

Write to soldiers. Send a letter or card to express your appreciation. Mailing addresses are listed on the Department of National Defence website. You can also post a message to troops on the site’s message board.

Donate in honour of a soldier. Just as the Canadian Forces aim to bring peace and security to countries in need, consider doing your part to help those around the world who are suffering. Organizations like Christian

Children’s Fund of Canada offer a gift catalogue where you can purchase items such as fruit trees or insecticide treated bed nets in honour of one of Canada’s heroes. You can also personalize a card and mail your thanks to a Canadian Forces member.

Pet Bits

Punched-Tin Can Candle Holders It’s time to start saving tin cans for this gift-giving idea for the holidays. Your

eco-friendly school-age kids not only will like the recycling aspect of this punched tin tealight candle holder, but they’ll also have a great time pounding nails into the tin and ice to create an imaginative design.Think Thanksgiving home decor, too. Choose fall-themed images to create, like a maple leaf, gourd and pilgrim ship to brighten your Thanksgiving centerpiece. Here’s the stuff you’ll need for one candleholder:--Plain tin can with label removed and all rough edges pinched flat and smooth. I use the smooth-sided 11-ounce Geisha brand mandarin orange cans for this project because they don’t have multiple ridges or grooves.--Nail--Hammer--Water--Towel--Permanent black felt-tip marker --Thin ribbon to decorate the outside of the can. --Household glue --Tealight candle

Here’s the fun:1. Fill the can near to the top with water and place in your freezer to freeze.2. When frozen solid, remove, wipe off frost on the outside of the can and dot design on the outside opposite the seam using the permanent marker. You may wish to draw the outline of a leaf or pumpkin for Thanksgiving. For December holidays draw a pine tree, holly, star, bell, menorah, 2013 or other festive holiday symbol. Choose shapes that are easy

to create dot to dot. Leave space near the top rim and base for adding ribbon.3. Place the can on its side on the towel. Carefully hammer out the design by positioning the nail on each of the dots and hammering it through the tin until it hits the ice. (The ice prevents the nail from bending the tin,) Continue punching holes until you have completed your pattern.

4. Run warm water over can until ice melts. Remove ice and dry can.5. Attach ribbon to the can with glue. Set candle in the center of the can and light.Note: Adults should be present when lighting candles.

Making Your House a Welcome Pet Home

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re planning to adopt a puppy in the next few weeks. Is there anything we should do to prepare our house to welcome our new dog when he or she arrives? -- Clarice H., New Orleans

DEAR CLARICE: First of all, congratulations! Adopting a pet from the shelter is a great choice. Second, there are many things you can do ahead of time to make your house dog-friendly. The shelter may have some information to guide you as well, but here are some basic things to add to your list.--”Pet-proof ” your house. In much the same way as parents need to childproof their house, pet owners need to make dangerous items difficult to access. Things that can be chewed on, that can splinter or break into small pieces, should be kept off the floor and off things that are puppy height (like the coffee table).--Set up a living area for your puppy, in a comfortable spot out of the way of foot traffic. Place its pet bed there, along with chew toys.--Have your dog’s leash, collar and other items ready and waiting. You’ll want to purchase these after you’ve chosen your puppy but before bringing it home.--Set up a file among your household papers specifically to hold your dog’s adoption information, shot record, registration and other pet-related data. You also should keep a copy of these papers in a separate location.

Don hosts bi-weekly voluntary chapel programs with the West Kelowna Warriors Jr. A and the Kelowna Chiefs Jr. B hockey teams.

For more information, contact Don at [email protected].

Since 1977, Hockey Ministries International has been active in every area of hockey including youth, college and junior, European, Minor Pro, and the NHL. Through their camps, chapels, clinics, and conferences they serve the spiritual needs of players, coaches, families and fans.

Each summer HMI hosts over 2,000 of hockey’s youth at Christian Hockey Camps International. The camps are a highlight for these young players. Summer hockey is combined with a caring staff and fun atmosphere to present the gospel message.

HMI’s chapel program, now present in 22 North American leagues, is offered to teams to provide a safe spiritual and emotional resource for players. It is also an opportunity for all players to seek answers, counsel and support from Chaplains.

Don Richmond, local hockey chaplain.

“I joined HMI because I believe in a missional life, which I am living here in BC. Unlike many Christian groups, I do not differentiate between local and foreign missions, for that is a paradigm that only makes sense from a small thinking western perspective. I simply want to light up the world, where people need Christ.”
